Be it known that I, CHARLES J. WITTIG, residing in Milwaukee, in the county ofMilwaukee and State of Wisconsin, have invented a new and useful Improvement in ApparatusV for Spraying Coating or Coloring Fluids, of which the following is a description, reference being had to the accompanying drawings, which are a part of this specification.
This invention relates to improvements in apparatus for spraying or throwing iiuid paint, whitewash, or similar coating or covering iiuid onto surfaces to be colored or coated. When using apparatus of this class which are now in the market for coating or coloring the interior of buildings, it is difficult and almost impossible to prevent some of the material or duid from dropping or falling to the iioor. The sprays or streams issuing from the present devices are ofV such a nature that some of theheavier coating or coloring pigments fall or drop'therefrom.
The object of this invention is to provide an apparatus for spraying or throwing fluid paint, whitewash, or similar coating or coloring duid onto the surface to be coated or col-v ored by means of which a curtain or wall of rapidly-moving air will be caused to surround the spray or stream of material to prevent any of the same from dropping or falling from the stream or to the floor until the same :reaches the surface to be coated or colored. This and other objects I attain by means of a device embodying the elements described in the specification and illustrated in the aoco mpanying drawings, in which- Figure 1 is a side sectional view of a device embodying this invention. Fig. 2 is an end view of said device. Fig. 3 is a view in cross-section taken on line 3 3 in Fig. 1. Fig.' 4 is a cross-sectional View taken on line 4 4 in Fig. 1. Fig. 5 is a detail view of a portion of the device. Fig. 6 is a view in cross-section taken on line 6 6 in Fig. 1.
Throughout the several views like elements are denoted by like characters.
The apparatus preferably consists of a semispherical casing 1, although the shape or formation of the casing may be varied and still perform its function. The casing is provided with a centrally-located neck 2, having a central passage orport3 for the 'coloring or coating duid and a series of air passages or ports 4 surrounding said central passage, as clearly shown in Fig. 3. The forward end of passage 3 is enlarged and threaded to receive a long nipple 5. The forward rim of casing 1 is provided with an interiorlyextending annular liange 6, the inner periphery of which is machined to form a tapered seat 7, and a throttle or valve-disk 8, centrally threaded to nipple 5, is provided with a tapered outer edge adapted to coact withthe tapered seat 7 as said disk is turned on the threads of the nipple by means of a squared projection 9, formed integral with said disk. A lock-nutlO surrounds nipple 5 and is adapted to hold said disk in its adjusted position. Threaded to the forward end of nipple 5 is a fluid-nozzle ll, provided with a partition-plate 12, pierced at'its center and machined to form the seat of a needle-point valve. The forward end of the nozzle is exteriorly threaded to receive a cap 13, provided with an opening 14 through its center, and between the inner face of said cap and the end of the nozzle a centrally pierced or perforated disk 15 is positioned. A number of these disks may be provided with different-sized perforations therethrough, and the disk serves in a sense as a protector for the cap against the action of the stream of coating orcoloring fluid, which usuallyis alkaline or acid. The nozzle is provided with an angularly-positioned internally-threaded lug 16,` adapted to receive and guide a needle-pointed valve-stem 17 for coacting with the seat in the partition l2. The stem is surrounded by a stuffing-nut 18 and provided with a handle 19.
A suitable flexible pipe or hose 20 will surround neck 2 and connect the` interior of casing 1, through passage 4, to any suitable source of air-pressure supply,while a suitable flexible pipe or hose 21, by means of nipple 5, passage 3, and a short nipple 22, threaded into an enlargement at the outer end of passage 3, connects nozzle 11 to a suitable source of supply of coloring or coating lluid under pressure.
The valve in the nozzle will be adjusted so that a suitable spray or stream of coloring or IOO coating fluid will issue from the nozzle and disk 8 will be adjusted so that a curtain or wall of rapidly-moving air will be forced from casing l between iiange 6 and the edge of disk S, to surround the stream or spray of luid between the apparatus and the surface to be covered, and this rapidlymoving-cur tain or Wall of air will catch and carry any of the pigments of coating or coloring material which fall or drop from the spray or stream to the wall or surface to be coated.
It will be seen that the device iscapable of many modifications from the exact construction shown. The disk 8 may be replaced by a concave-convex member, and when this is done the nipple 5 may be shortened and the nozzle set into the concave side of the member. Many other modifications may be made, and I do not limit this invention to the construction shown.
What I claim as my invention is l. In a device of the character described, a substantially semispherical casing having its i'lat side open, an air-pipe leading into said casing, a coating-fluid -conveying member passing through said casing, a variable nozzle for said member, and means movable longitudinally of said conveying member for throttling the opening from said casing.-
2. In a device of the character described, a coating-duid pipe, a nozzle for said pipe variable while the device is in operation, an airpipe Without communication with said coatingfluid pipe, and an air-nozzle connected to said air-pipe and adapted to discharge air around and eXteriorly to the coating-fluid nozzle.
3. In a device of the character described, a coating-duid pipe, a variable nozzle for said pipe, an air pipe without communication with said coating-f1 uid pipe, and a variable airnozzle connected to said air-pipe and adapted to discharge air around and exteriorly to the coating-Huid nozzle.
4.. In a device of the character described, a casing,a coating-fluid pipe extending through said casing, a nozzle for said pipe, an air-pipe leading into said casing and a wall for said casing movable longitudinally ofsaid coatingfluid pipe to form a variable air-nozzle for discharging air around and exteriorly to the coating-[luid nozzle.
5. In a device of the character described, a casing, a coating-[luid pipe extending through said casing, a variable nozzle for said pipe, an air-pipe leading into said casing, and a Wall for ,said casing threaded to said coatingfluid pipe and movable longitudinally thereof to form a variable air-nozzle fordischarging air around and exterorly to the coatingfiuid nozzle.
