UNITED STATES PATENT OFFICE.
ERNST OTTO SPETMANN, OF HAMBURG, GERMANY.
B OAT-LOWERING APPARATUS SPECIFICATION forming part of Letters Patent N 0. 723,416, dated March 24, 1908. Applicants filed October 26, 1901. Serial NO. 80,055. (No model.)
To all whom, it may concern:
Be it known that I, ERNST OTTo SPETMANN, a subject of the King of Prussia, Emperor of Germany, residing at Hamburg, Germany, have invented certain newand useful Improvements in Boat-LoweringApparatus, of which the following is a specification.
My invention relates to apparatus for lowering boats, and has for its object to enable davits of ordinary type to be'swung out and boats to be lowered therefrom, even when the ship is heeled away from the side on which the davits are mounted.
Apparatus according to this invention is illustrated by way of example in the accompanying drawings, whereof-- Figure 1 is a sideelevation. Fig. 2 is a sectional side elevation taken at right angles to Fig. 1, and Fig. 3 is a cross-section corresponding to the line A B of Fig. 2.
Apparatus according to this invention comprises two ordinary davits 0., whose lower ends are formed as pivots b, that are mounted in step-bearings 0, attached to the side of the ship, so that in this way each davit is axially rotatable. Each davit is held about half-way up by a collar or slide d, which is connected by means of trunnions f to arms 2', that are hinged to the hull of the ship and are held together by means of cross-pieces g and it. On the davit there is secured, by means of a clamping-screw is, an adjustable ring Z,
which is provided with a projection m, that engages with the under side of the collar (1, so as to prevent the davit from sliding therein and the arms 2' from being turned outboard. A shackle n is attached to the upper crosspiece 9 and is also connected by means of a nut o to a tubular rod 10, provided with an internal thread, into which there is screwed a bolt g, which is provided with an external thread and ispivoted to a ring r, secured to the deck. For the purpose of preventing the arms i from being moved too far inboard by means of the rods 19 and q, stops 8 are attached to the hull of the ship above the hinges of the said arms. In the example shown two adjacent davits are mounted in a single collar; but a separate collar can of course be provided for each davit, as must always be the case when a single apparatus is used.
In lowering a boat by means of this apparatusunder ordinary conditions it is swung outboard in the manner hitherto usual and lowered until it reaches the water. If, on the other hand, it is necessary to lower boats on the high side of the ship when it is heeled,- the arms 2' are disconnected from the rings 1* by unscrewing the rods 19, the clamping-screw 7c is slackened, and the arms 2' are turned outboard, as shown by dotted lines in Fig. 2, whereby the davits are brought into a position at right angles to the surface of the water, which enables the boat tovbe lowered into the water in the ordinary way.
I claim 1. An apparatus for lowering boats composed of a pivoted and axiallyrotatable davit,
a slide mounted on the same, and a pivoted arm connected to the slide, substantially as specified.
2. An apparatus for lowering boats composed of a pivoted and axially-rotatable davit, a slide mounted on the same, means for looking the slide to the davit, a pivoted arm connected to the slide, and meansfor bracing said arm, substantiallyas specified.
Signed at Hamburg, Germany, this 15th day of October, A. D. 1901.
ERNST OTTO SPETMANN.
