Description

@uitrit taten atent @frn JAMES MAXIM, oF KEWANNA, INDIANA. Leiters Patent No. 72.310, dated December 17, 1867.
IMPROYVEMBNT IN GHUENS.
.TO ALL WHOM IT MAY CONCERN:
Be it known that I, JAMES MAXEY, of Kewanna, in the county .of Fulton, and in the State of Indiana, have invented certain new and useful Improvements in Ghurns; and do hereby declare that the following is a full, clear, and exact description thereof, reference being had to the accompanying drawings, and to the letters of reference marked thereon.
In the annexed drawings, making part of this specication, A represents the body ofthe churn, which may be made of any suitable size, and in any of the known and usual ways in which upright or vertical cburns are made. BA represents lthe dasher-staff, which has a bearing in the bottom of the churn-body at its lower end, its
upper end passing through a suitable hole or opening in the top E, and being provided with a pinion, F. H H represent two standards, which are erected upon the cover E, and in which a horizontal shaft, I, has its bearings. Upon one end of this shaft is a gear-wheel, G, and upon theother, a crank-handle. The wheel G gears into the pinion F, and serves' to give motion to the dasberstai Upon thelower end of the dasher-sta' are two series of arms,a a, and secured aeross the ends of the corresponding arms, are the paddles C C. Drepresents a gauze-wire wheel which surrounds the dasher-staii', a short distance above the upper arms a a, said wheel being a little less in diameter than the inner diameter of the churn-body. This wheel answers not only to break the cream or milk `as it is poured into the churn, but also prevents the cream from splashing, and assists in breaking it when it does splash. This churn is simple and cheap and effective, and one which is easily operated. I l
Having thus fully described'my invention, what I claim as new, and desire to secure by Letters Patent, is
A The arrangement ofthe churn-body A, standards H H, shaft I, wheels Gr and F, and stad' B, provided with the wheel D and the paddles C C, as and for the purpose set forth.
' In testimony that I claim the foregoing, I have hereunto set my hand, this 1st day of October, 1867.
JAMES MAXEY.
