Description

DATDNTBD MAR. 17, 1903. A. D.A MOLDAND 0. H. PICARD.
HYDROGARBON BURNER., 'FILED 0012.21 1902.
UNITED STATES PATENT OFFICE.,y
ANTHONY D. MCLEAN AND CHARLES H. PICARD, OFV SAN FRANCISCO,
I CALIFORNIA.
HYDROCARBON-BURN ER.
SPECIFICATION forming part of Letters Patent No. 723,010, dated 1VIarch 17, 1903.
Application filed October 27,1902. Serial No. 129,028. (No model.)
To (tu 11171/0711/ it may concern:
Be it known that we, lANTHONY D. MCLEAN and CHARLES I-I. PICARD, citizens of the United States, residing in the city and county of San Francisco, State of California, have invented an Improvement in Hydrocarbon- Burners; and we hereby declare the following to be a full, clear, and exact description of the same.
lOur invention relates to an apparatus for the combustion of oil or equivalent hydrocarbons.
It consists of a nozzle having openings for the admission of steam and oil and a peculiarly-shaped slotted plate through which the oil is delivered and a means for discharging the steam so as to impinge upon said plate and to be delivered in intimate contact and in essentially the same direction with the sheet of oil which escapes through the plate.
It also comprises details of construction which will be more fully explained by ref- 'erence to the accompanying drawings, in
which- Figure 1 is a transverse vertical section of our invention. Fig. 2 is a longitudinal vertical section of same. Fig. 3 is a transverse vertical section of a modification of our invention. Fig. 4 is a longitudinal vertical section of same. Fig. 5 is a top view of distributing-plate, Figs. l and 2. Fig. 6 is a top View of distributing-plate, Figs. 3 and 4.
The apparatus consists of a nozzle the body A of which has a central opening, as at 2, through which the hydrocarbon liquid may be admitted. central opening passages 3 are made, and these are carried up to a point opposite the distributing-plate 4 and thence turned so that the steam-jet is discharged against the datV striking against the side of the segment, is diverted outwardly through slots made either between the segment and the similarlyshaped outer end of the nozzle, as shown at Upon one or both sides of this 6, or, if preferred, the periphery of the plate may be made Wide enough to fill the space in the outer end of the nozzle A and have slots made'through it. We have found, however, that by making this segmental portion sufficiently thinner than the width of the opening in the segmental part of A the channels 6 on each side of the channel 5 form a sufticient escape for the steam When the steam is admitted upon either one or both sides of the distributing and disintegrating plate.
If preferred, the steam may be admitted through one of vthe passages 3 and the oil through the other, in which case a single discharge-slot would suh'ce for each of the components,.which are ultimately united to forni the combustible. The action ofthe hot steam impingingagainst Ythe distributing-plate 4 also serves to heat the oil and to assist in subdividing or comminuting it.
Having thus described our invention, what We claim, and desire to secure by Letters Patent, isv l. The combination ina hydrocarbon-burner of a body portion having its outer end slotted in the direction of its length; said body having passages through it for the delivery of steam and oil; and a distributing-plate parallel with and seated in said slot so that its outer end is substantially flush with the outer end ofV said body, and against which plate the steam is directed laterally and caused to impinge and be diverted, said plate and the Walls of the slot forming separate discharge-passages for the steam and oil.
v2.. In an oil-.burner the combination of a body portion having separate passages for steam and oiland havin gits outer end slotted IOO ing a correspondingly-shaped outer end oentrally slotted and forming a seat into Which the plate is secured with its curved periphery essentially coin eident with that of the holder, a passage through which oil is delivered to the central slot in the plate, and a separate passage through which steam is delivered to impinge against the exterior of the plate and to be thence discharged and mixed with the escaping hydrocarbon. p
4. An oil-burner consisting of a conductor and head portion having a transverse segmentally-raised section at its out-er end, and a slot or channel made transversely of said section, a plate having a corresponding curvature at its outer periphery, said plate being fixed in the slot so as to separate the oil
