Description

PATENTED MAR. 1'7, 1903.
C. F. DEARDURFF.
ADJUSTABLE HEAD REST.
APPLICATION FILED MAY 3. 1902.
N0 MODEL.
UNITED STATES CHARLES F. DEARDURFF,
PATENT Demos.
OF BELVIDERE, ILLINOIS.
ADJU STAB LE H 'EAD-REST.
S EC F C ION forming part of Letters Patent No. 722,950, dated March 17, 1903. Application-filed May 3, 1902. Serial No. 105,816. (No model.)
To aZZ whom it may concern:
Be it known that I, CHARLES F. DEAR- DURFF, a citizen of the United States, residing at Belvidere, in the county of Boone and State of Illinois, have inventedcertain new and useful Improvements in Adjustable Head-Rests, of which the following is a specification.
This invention is an improved adjustable head-rest for barbers chairs; and the object thereof is to provide a device which can be quickly and conveniently adjusted, so that the inclination of the head-rest may be varied to accommodate patrons and-as conditions often require. 1
With these objects in View my invention comprises a base-plate which is securely fa'stened to the upper end of the supporting standard, and to the base-plate is'hingedly connected the head-rest proper, which is movable and held in its various positions by means of a wheel or disk that is revolubly mounted upon the standard and held in place by the said plate.
The invention also consists in certain details of construction and novelties of combination and arrangement, as will be fully described in the following specification and pointed out in the claims, reference being had to the drawings, in which Figure l is a perspective'view showing the general application of my improvement, the said view being taken of the back of the chair. Fig. 2 is a detail side View of my improvement, showing the head-rest adjusted to an almost vertical position. Fig. 3 is a similar view showing the head-rest in its lowermost position. Fig. 4: is a detail perspective View of the base-plate, and Fig. 5 is a similar View of the plate that is secured to the head-rest and which is hingedly connected to the baseplate. Fig. 6 is a detail view of the disk or wheel.
My invention is so constructed that it may be readily applied to the barbers chairs now incommon use, the only requirement being to slot the upper end of the sliding standard A for the purpose as will appear later on.
Upon the standard A is fixedly secured a V-shaped base-plate B, having a slot B produced therein, in which is adapted to operate a disk or wheel 0, whose periphery is milled,
as shown at O. This disk or wheel is mounted upon a shaft D, which is held in the vertex of the V-shaped base-plate and rests upon the upper end of the standard, as shown most clearly in Fig. 2 of the drawings. The lower forward edge of the base plate is formed with an elongated ear B which is adapted to fit between similarly-disposed ears E, arranged upon the lower edge of a plate E, that is securely fastened upon the back of the head-rest or pad F. The bolt G is passed through the said cars, which forms a suitable hinge between the plates, as will be readily understood.
In operation when the parts are assembled, as shown, the wheel or ,disk is positioned within the slots of the standard and V-shaped plates, and the plate E is'adapted to bear upon the periphery of the wheel or disk G, which holds the pad in its adjusted position, it being only necessary in order to adjust the pad to revolve the wheel or disk to the positions shown in Figs. 2 and 3 of the drawings, and by providing the contacting edge of the disk C with a roughened or milled surface all danger of the plate slipping after it has been adjusted is positively avoided,
It will thus beseen that I provide an exceedingly cheap and simple device capable of readyattachment to chairs now in use.
Having thus fully described my invention, what I claim as new, and desire to secure by Letters Patent, is w 1. In a device of the kind described, the combination with'the sliding standard, of a base-plate held thereon, a shaft revolubly mounted in said base-plate, a disk eccentrically held on said shaft, a plate hinged to the base-plate and having a head-rest or pad arranged thereon, and which is adapted for engagement by the said wheel or disk, substantially as and for the purpose specified.
2 In a device of the kind described, the combination of the vertically-movable standard, a V-shaped' plate arranged thereon, a shaft revolubly heldin the vertex of the said plate and resting upon the said standard, a disk eccentrically mounted upon the said shaft, a plate hingedly connected to the forward end of the said V-shaped plate and having a pad or head-rest secured thereto, the said plate being adapted for engagement with chairs, comprising a V-shaped plate having a slot arranged therein, a shaft journaled in the vertex of the said plate, a wheel eccentrically mounted in said slot on the shaft, a plate hinged to the lower end of the V-shaped plate and having a head-rest secured thereon, the said plate being arranged for engagement with the said wheel or disk, substantially as shown and for the purpose specified.
CHARLES F. DEARDURFF.
