Be it known that I, LLOYD VINCENT R001), a citizen of the United States, residing at Marietta, in the county of Washington and State of Ohio, have invented a new and useful Fil-, ter, of which the following is a specification.
This invention relates to that class of pressure-filters which are usually attached for operation to a hydrant; and it has forits object to provide a device of this class which shall be simple, inexpensive, and efficient and in the construction of which shall be embodied a'cleaning device whereby the surface of the filtering member maybe cleaned whenever desired and freed from the mud and impurities deposited thereon, such cleaning operation performed automatically by the action of water permitted to fiow through the filter-- casing. My invention consists in the improved construction, arrangement, and combination of: parts, which will be-hereinafter fully described, aud particularly pointed out in the claims.

A washer 12 is interposed between the lower edge of the filtering member and the bottom of the eas- The upper end of the filtering member is seated in an annularly-flanged disk 13, having a centrally-disposed upwardly-extending spindle 14, the upper end of which is reduced and seated in a recess or pocket 15, formed for its reception in the under side of the cover. It is not essential that this recess 01' pocket should be extended so as to form a wprotuberance upon the upper side of the cover, as shown in Fig. 1 of the drawings hereto attached; but this construction is preferred, inasmuch as it admits of a corresponding lengthening of the spindle 14, whereby the parts ofthe device may be more, conven iently assembled. The upper end of the casing 1 is provided with a tangentially-disposedinlet 17; directly below the mouth.or opening of which a segmental ledge or flange 18 is formed upon the inner side'o'f the casing, said ledge being horizontally disposed, as clearlyseen in Fig. 1.

'Said disk is provided with an annular flange, which is disposed approximately in alinement with the inner edge of the ledge 18 and the upper edge of which engages an annular groove 22 in the under side of the cover for the purpose of forming an approximately water-tight joint. The flange 21 is provided with a plurality of radiating leaves or paddles 23. Brushes 24, which are preferably constructed of some suitable non-corrodible metal, are attached .to the under side of the disk 19, said brushes being preferably provided with'screw-threaded stems or shanks that extend through the said disk and are secured to the latter by means of nuts 25. The brushes are made of a length to extend nearly to the bottom of the casing, and their bristles normally engage the surface of the filtering member, as will be clearly seen in Fig. 1 of the drawings.
From the foregoing description, taken in connection with the drawings hereto annexed, the operation and advantages of the invention will be readily understood. While the filter is in use as such the valve of the pipe 16 is kept closed, and the water entering through the inlet 17 will fill the casing and pass through the body of the filtering member to the outlet 9. When after a period of use the filtering capacity of the device is reduced, owing to the deposits upon the surface of the filtering member, it is only necessary to open the valve 16, which permits of the free passage of water from the filter. Water will thus enter at the inlet 17 with sufficient force to rapidly rotate the disk 19, carrying the brushes 24, which will speedily re move the deposits from the surface of the filter, all impurities being carried off through the outlet 16. The action of the device will be readily understood, the disk 19 with its flange 21 and paddles 23 constituting an ordinary wator-wheel and the ledge or flange 18 being sufficiently extended to enable the paddles to receive the full force of the impact of the water.
I desire it to be understood that while I have herein described the preferred construction of my invention I do not necessarily limit myself with regard to the details of the same, but reserve the right to any changes, alterations, and modifications which may be resorted to without departing from the spirit and scope of my invention or sacrificing the utility of the same.
Having thus fully described myinvention, I claim 1. In a device of the class described, a casing having a tangential inlet and suitable outlets, a filtering member within said casing, a cover for the latter having an annular groove in its under side, a flanged disk forming a seat for the upper end of the filtering member and having an upward-extending spindle, a flanged paddle-disk mounted upon said spindle, the flange thereof engaging the annular groove in the under side of the cover, and brush members carried by said paddle-disk.
2. In a device of the class described, a casing having atangential inlet and suitable outlets, a segmental ledge-within said casing adjacent to the mouth of the inlet, a filtering member within said casing, a seat member for the latter having a spindle, and a paddlewheel mounted upon said spindle and carrying brush members engaging the filtering member.
3. In a device of the class described, a casing having a tangential inlet and suitable outlets, a segmental ledge within said casing adjacent to the mouth of the outlet, at filtering member within said casing, a cover for the casing having a recess in its under side, a seat member for the filter having a spindle engaging the recess in the under side of the casing, a paddle-wheel mounted upon said spindle and brushes carried by said paddle and engaging the surface of the filtering member.
4. In a device of the class described, a casing having atangential inlet and suitable outlets and provided with an exterior annular flange, a cover for said casing having a recess in its under side, a filtering member within the casing, a flanged disk forming a seat for said filtering member and having an-upwardextending spindle engaging the recess in the under side of the cover, and a yoke having inturned arms engaging under the annular flange of the casing and provided with a setscrew bearing against the upper side of the cover to bind the parts together.
5. In a device of the class described, a casing having a tangential inlet and suitable outlets, a filtering member within said casing, a segmental ledge within the latter adjacent to the mouth of the inlet, a cover having a recess in its under side, a flanged disk forming a seat for the filtering member and having an upward-extending spindle, a flanged paddledisk upon the latter engaging an annular .groove in the under side of the cover and brush members carried by said paddle-disk and engaging the surface of the filtering member.
