UNITED STATES PATENT OFFICE.
ANDRElV S. STEIGERWA'LD, OF PHILADELPHIA, PENNSYLVANIA.
DENTISTS FLASK.
SPECIFICATION forming part of Letters Patent No. 722,765, dated March 17, 1903.
Application filed April 11, 1902. Serial No. 102.359. (N0 model.)
To ctZZ whom, it may concern:
Be it known that I, ANDREW S. STEIGER- WALD, a citizen of the United States, residing in the city and county of Philadelphia, State of Pennsylvania, have invented certain new and useful Improvements in Dentists Flasks, of which the following is a full, clear, and exact description, reference being had to the accompanying drawings, of which Figure 1 is a plan view; Fig. 2, a section on line a: :0, Fig. 1; Fig. 3, a side elevation of the flask detached from the holding-base, the cover being detached; Fig. 4, a side elevation of the drag and cope detached; Fig. 5, a plan view of the holding-base detached; Fig. 6, a plan view of the annulus provided with the internal flange.
The object of this invention is to provide a dentists flask of simple and convenient construction.
The precise nature of the invention will appear from the following specification, reference being had to the accompanying drawings, in which 1 denotes the pan-shaped bottom portion of the flask, hereinafter termed the drag, which has at its top an external peripheral flange 2, that is provided with slots 3.
4 is the upper portion of the flask, hereinafter termed the cope, which is in the form of a frustum of a hollow cone that is open at the top and'bottom. The internal diameter of the lower or wider end of this cope is substantially equal to that of the upper end of the drag, as seen in Fig. 2. Said cope is provided with vertically-depending lugs 5, that correspond with and are adapted to register with and be entered, respectively, into the aforesaid slots 3 of the drag when the cope is suitably placed upon the drag, as shown.
6 is an annulus that is provided with an internal flange 7 at its lower end and with internal screw-threads 8 at and adjacent to its upper end.
9 is a top or cover whose periphery is provided with screw-threads corresponding with and adapted to engage the threads of the annulus 6.
In the present instance part of the upper side of said cover is depressed, but with a central rectangular part or lug 10 for the convenient turning of the cover by means of a wrench applied to the lug.
In using the flask the drag 1 is filled with plaster-of-paris, and the wax pattern of the denture is then embedded'therein. The cope is then placed upon the drag, the lugs of the former being entered into the slots 3 of the latter, (thus insuring the apposition of the cope and drag,) and it (the cope 4) is filled with plaster-of-paris and leveled oiI" flush with the top. The cope is now separated from the drag and the pattern removed, and the mold in the drag is then filled with strips ofindiarubber, all in the usual way. The cope is now placed over the drag as before, the lugs 5 being entered in the slots 3, as in Fig. 4. These parts are then inserted within the annulus 6, the flange of the drag resting upon the flange 7 of the annulus. The cover 9 is finally entered into the latter and screwed down upon the top of the cope, thus forcing the latter against or adjacent to the drag, at the same time compressing the rubber in the mold of the latter. The flask is now ready to go into the muffle.
For convenience in manipulating the parts and screwing down the cover, I provide an annular base 11, Figs. 1 and 2, adapted to receive the lower portion of the drag and having lugs 12, with holes 13 for screws or bolts for fastening the base to a table or bench, and in order to prevent the drag from turning I provide it with opposite lugs 14:, that are adapted to engage corresponding vertical slots 15 (indicated in Fig. 2) on the inner side of said base. I
As a convenient means for preventing the rotation of the annulus 8 when the cover is being screwed therein I provide slots in the flange 7 of the annulus corresponding with the slots 3 in the flange of the drag, and I also make the lugs 5 of the cope of sufficient length to project into the said slots, respectively, of the annulus. One of the latter slots is indicated at 16 in Fig. 2, in which on that side one of the lugs 5 is shown entered into one of said slots, as well as a slot 3 in the flange of the drag.
When the flask is ready to be placed in the muffle, it is lifted out of the base.
As the flasks may be piled one on the other in the muifle, I prefer to have the top of the lug of the cover flush with or slightly below the plane of the annulus, as seen in Fig. 2.
It will be obvious that the several parts of my improved flask may be readily cast in metal and may be conveniently put together and separated and that the screw-cover gives an even and gradual pressure upon the cope, and thus a like compression of the rubber between it and the drag.
Having thus described my invention, 1 claim as new and desire to secure by Letters Patent- 1. In a dentists flask the combination of the drag having the peripheral flange, the
. cope open at the top, the annulus having the flange adapted to engage said flange of the drag, and the cover adapted to screw into said annulus and bear upon and close the top of said cope, substantially as and for the purpose set forth.
2. In a dentists flask, the combination of the drag having the peripheral flange, the cope open at the top, the annulus having the internal screw-threads and the flange adapted to engage said flange of the drag, the cover having the peripheral screw-threads corresponding with and adapted to engage the screw-threads of the annulus, together with means for maintaining the drag and cope in apposition, substantially as and for the purpose set forth.
3. In a dentists flask, the combination of the drag, having the peripheral flange and the slots therein, the cope open at the top and having the peripheral dependinglugs adapted to register with and enter said slots, the annulus having the flange adapted to engage said flange of the drag, and the cover adapted to screw into said annulus and to bear upon and close the top of said cope, substantially as and for the purpose set forth.
4:. In a dentists flask, the combination of the drag having the peripheral flange, the cope open at the top, the annulus having the flange adapted to engage said flange of the drag, the cover adapted to screw into said annulus and to bear upon and close the top of said cope, and means for preventing the rotation of the annulus and drag with relation to each other, substantially as and for the purpose set forth.
5. In a dentists flask, the combination of the drag having the peripheral flange and the slots in the latter, the cope open at the top, the annulus provided with the flange adapted to engage said flange of the drag, and having also the slots adapted to register with said slots of the flange of the drag, the peripheral depending lugs of said cope adapted to register with and to be entered respectively into the said slots of the drag and also those of the annulus, and the cover adapted to screw into said annulus and to bear upon and close the top of said cope, substantially as and for the purpose set forth.
6. In a dentists flask, the combination of the drag having the peripheral flange, the cope open at the top, the annulus having the flange adapted to engage said flange of the drag, the cover adapted to screw into said annulus and to bear upon and close the top of said cope, means for preventing the rotation of the drag and annulus with relation to each other, the annular base adapted to reoeive said drag, and means for preventing the rotation of the latter with relation to said base, substantially as and for the purpose set forth.
7. In a dentists flask, the combination of the drag having the peripheral flange, and the lugs, 14, the cope open at the top, the annulus having the flange adapted to engage said flange of the drag, the cover adapted to screw into said annulus and bear upon and close the top of said cope, the base adapted to receive said drag, and having the slots into which the said lugs of the drag are adapted to be entered, substantially as and for the purpose set forth. I
8. In a dentists flask, the combination of the drag having the peripheral flange, the cope open at the top, the annulus having the flange adapted to engage said flange of the drag, and the cover adapted to screw into said annulus and to bear upon and close the top of said cope, and having the lug, 10, or the like for turning it, the said annulus, substantially as and for the purpose set forth.
In testimony whereof I have hereunto affixed my signature this 17th day of March, A. D.'1902.
ANDREW S. STEIGERWALD.
