BOILER-FEED ATTACHMENT.
SPECIFICATION forming part of Letters Patent No. 722,696, dated March 17, 1903.

To all whom it may concern:
Be it known that I, WALTER W. GREEN, a citizen of the United States, residing at Wing, in the county of Livingston and State of Illinois, have invented a new and useful Boiler- Feed Attachment, of which the following is a specification.
The invention relates to improvements in devices of that class employed for supplying water to steam-boilers.
The principal object of the invention is to provide a boilerfeed of such construction that the injector, inspirator, or other Waterforcing device may be set into operation and kept in operation continuously during all the time the boiler is in use, the supply of water to the boiler being regulated in accordance with the character of work to be accomplished by said boiler. When once the rate of water consumption has been ascertained, the apparatus may be adjusted in such manner as to continuously feed water in small quantities to the boiler in order to renew the supply.
A further object of the invention is to provide an improved water-feeding device of this character in which the water may be heated by the steam supplied to the injector or inspirator from the boiler.. In the devices of this class in common use the temperature of the water is slightly raised during the travel between the injector and the boiler; but the amount of heat absorbed from the steam in this way is comparatively small and unimportant, while the feed appliance constructed in accordance with my present invention per mits the heating of the water to any desired temperature, the water being circulated through the inspirator or injector as often as necessary to absorb a greater or less quantity.

The accompanying drawing represents an elevation ofa boiler-feed attachment arranged in accordance with my invention.
*The boiler A, which may be of any suitable type and of any size and capacity, is connected by a steam-pipe 1, having a controllingvalve- 2, to an inspirator or injector 3 of any ordinary construction, that illustrated in the drawing being the well-known Garfield inspirator, said inspirator being connected to a water-supply pipe 4 and a feed-pipe 5, leading to the boiler and serving when in use to raise water through the pipe 4 and force the same through the pipe 5 into the boiler, the operation as thus far described being that ordinarily followed in boiler-feeding devices using injector or similar feeds.
The pipe 5 is provided with the usual checkvalve 6 and globe-valve 7, and to said pipe is connected a branch pipe 8, provided with a valve 9 and leading to a tank 10, to which the water is forced when not required in the boiler.
The two pipes 4 and 5 are connected by a pipe 11, having a controlling-valve 12, the
opening of this valve permitting some or all of the water forced into the pipe 5 by the inspirator to again return to the water-pipe 4 and pass through the inspirator, the quantity of water passing through the inspirator being governed partly by the valve 12 and partly by the Valve 13 on the water supply pipe 4:.
In the operation of the device, all of the valves being closed, the valve 13 is first opened and then the valves 14: and 15 of the inspirator are opened, and the globe-valve 7 in pipe 5 is also opened. To control the amount of waterput into the boiler the valve 13 is partly closed and the valve 12 is partly opened. This permits of a reduction of the quantity of Water fed to the boiler, a portion of the water being returned through the pipe 11 to the pipe 4, and directed upwardly in said pipe 4 by a suitable upwardly-bent nipple 16, and when the work of the boiler is comparatively light and but a small quantity of water is being evaporated a comparatively large quantity of Water may be made to circulate continuously in the injector and the pipes 5, 11, and 4, the water being returned again and again to the inspirator and being gradually heated, so that when finally forced into the boiler there will be no reduction in steam-pressure. The feed may be regulated to any desired extent, a small quantity of water being continuously supplied to the boiler to replace that evaporated.
In some cases, especially when the supplypipe connection to the boiler is closed, the valve 9 may be opened and the surplus water elevated to the tank 10 and used as a reserve water-supply for the boiler or for other purposes. When the water is being fed into the tank, the valve 12 may be entirely closed and the full quantity of water from the water-supply pipe 4 forced into the tank, it being unnecessary to heat the water when placing the same in the receiving-tank. For boilerfeeding, however, it is desirable to properly heat the water before it is fed into the boiler, and there is little or no waste from the continuous use of steam, inasmuch as the heat is absorbed by the water and lessens the amount of fuel necessary to evaporate the water when in the boiler.
Having thus described my invention, what I claim is- 1. In an apparatus of the class described, the combination with awater-feeding device of the injector or inspirator type, of a boiler, a piping connection between the Water-feeding device and the boiler, water-supply and steam pipes connected to said feeding device, and a valved by-pass extending between said piping connection and the Water-pipe and connected to the latter at a point slightly in advance of the connection between the water-pipe and the feeding device to thereby accelerate the fiow of water to said feeding device.
2. In a device of the class specified, a waterfeeding device, a steam-supplypipe, a valved water-supply pipe, a water-feed pipe extending from the feeding device to the boiler, a valved pipe leading from the feed-pipe to the water-supply pipe and provided with a ,nipple for directing the Water in its return movement to the water-feeding device.
