To all whom it may concern Be it known that l, JosErI-I H. COOPER, a citizen of the United States, residing at Paola, in the county of Miami and State of Kansas, have invented a certain new and useful Improvement in Chemical-Feeders, of which the following is a full, clear, concise, and exact description, reference being had to the accompanying drawings, forming a part of this specification.
My invention relates to systems and apparatus for chemically treating boiler feed water.
llVhilemy invention is capable of wider application, it is particularly useful in Connection with railway locomotives and injectors which are commonly employed to deliver boiler feed water from the engine tender to the boiler. Ordinarily, there are two injectors mounted upon a locomotive, one upon the liremans side and the other upon the engineers side. ln accordance with my invention, l provide a single tank or reservoir containing boiler compound or chemical in liquid form. This storage tank or reservoir may be located at any convenient point upon the locomotive. The arrangement and operation of my system is such that the control of the injectors by the engineer and fireman will operate automatically to control the Supply of compound or chemical in proportions predetermined in accordance with an analysis of the water fed to the boiler. The chemical supply pipes are connected with the suction pipes or chambers of the two injectors. Each of the chemical supply pipes is provided with a check valve, whereby the Operation of either injector will effect the proper operation of the chemical feeding apparatus without interference from the other injector and the connections thereto. The chemical supply pipes are provided with shut-o valves and sight feeders. rlhe pipes leading to the two injectors are co-mbined and led through a single tube to a point near the top of the chemical supply tank. The result is that a suction upon the chemical feed pipe system is necessary to raise the chemical solution from the storage tank. When, therefore, the injectors are not in Operation, the supply of chemical automatically ceases. vl/'hem however, either injector is put in operation, the suction created in the chemical supply pipe raises the Chemical solution from the bottom of the Specification of Letters Patent,

storage tank to supply chemical in proper proportion as determined by the setting of the Chemical regulating valve. rlhis valve is of novel construction and function and is arranged to prevent incrustation and faulty and irregular operation resulting therefrom. The regulating valve is at the bottom of the induction tube of the chemical supply tank, whereby it is kept always in the chemical solution. This alone would go far in preventing incrustation of the valve, but in addition to this l mount the valve at the end of a very long slender stem, preferably of steel. The inevitable vibration of the rod, at the end of which the valve is mounted, causes a movement of the valve which also will prevent an accumulation of sediment.
rllhese and the other features of my invention will be more fully understood by reference to the accompanying drawings, in which- Figure 1 is a side elevational view of a locomotive equipped with a feed water and chemical injecting apparatus embodying my invention, a portion of the cab being broken away to more clearly reveal the apparatus; Fig. 2 is an end elevational view of a locomotive boiler showing how the water treating and feeding apparatus is positioned; and F ig. 3 is a longitudinal cross-sectional view of the chemical tank taken onthe line 3 3 of Fig. 2 and looking in the direction indicated by the arrows. y

Referring to the drawings, a locomotive boiler is shown at d and a tender at 5 provided with a suitable water tank or reservoir 6. The boiler is provided with injectors 7 and 8 arranged lrespectively on the right and left hand sides of the boiler. The injectors should be located above the normal water level in the tank 6. rllhe water level is indicated by the line 9.
The preferred construction of the injectors 7 and 8 is shown and described in detail in my co-pending application Serial No. 614,198.
The suction connections of the injectors 7 and 8 are connected with the water tank or reservoir 6 by means of pipes 10 and 11 respectively. The injectors may, if desired, be provided with valves 'l' and S to close the passages from the water tank to the injectors. The steam supply connections 12 ico and 13 of the injectors 7 and 8 are connect-` ed with pipes lil. and.15. These pipes .14 and 15 are combinedand leadto..th,e .boiler l by means of a suitable T-connection 16. The manual valve 17 is provided to vadmit steam to the pipes 111 and 15 and thence. to the steam connections 12 and 13 of the injectors 7 and 8 respectively.
At 18 is shown the tank which contains the water treating material or chemical. This tank is providedlwith gage y19 and air vent 20. A pipe 21 is lprovided 'through which water treatingl material or chemical may be admitted to the tank. *This pipe may be provided with a Vmanual valve 22 if desired. Thetank18 is .provided with an induction tube 18", which in lturn is provided with a valve 23 which will be hereinafterreferred to in detail.. Connected with the pipe 2.11 by means ofasuitable coupling, not shown, are theA water treating material V supply pipes 25 and 2.6. These pipeslead to thesightfeed chambers 27, 28 respectively.

flow of water treating material through t-he sight feed chamber 127. .A needle valve 30 in a likemanner regulates the flow of water treatingy material through the sight feed chamber 28. .Leading .from the sight feed chambers to the suction chambers ofthe in-i jectors 7 and 8 are the pipes 31 and 32. interposed in? these pipes are the .check valvesv 33 and 34. .These valves are normally held open by gravity and close against water risesup into the injector. .At the` same time, the pressurein pipe 33 being reduced, 1 water. treating material is drawn through valve 23, induction. pipe 18, pipes 244 and 25, and valves .29. and 33 into theinjector 7 The water treating material and the feed water are 4then injectedinto the boiler through a suitable delivery pipe. At the time the water .treating material is drawn from tank 18, the check valve 34 is closed, thereby preventing. the flow. of water treating material to the injector 8. 1f both injectors should be open at the same time, of course, water treating material would flow to Aboth injectors. 1f only one injector is in use, as for example the injector atthe righthand side, it may be found desirable to fully close the 'sight feed valve 30. Iftthe vinjector on the` left-hand side alone is to be used, the sight feed valve 29 may be closed. Since the regulation of the iiow of chemical is controlled by the special valve 23, it is usually preferable to open fully the sightfeed valve associated with one or both injectors in conformity with the usefof one o-r both vof these injectors. Referring now to Fig. 3, it will be seen that the'induction tube 18 extends down to the tank 18 to almost the bottom thereof. To close the end ofV this tube the regulating valve 23 is provided. This valve is covered with liquid whenv the tank vis filled withl the water treating material. The valve is mounted upon a long slenderv rod 23". The

A chemical tank for a feed Water treating system comprising a casing, an induction tube carried by said casing entering the same at a point above the normal liquid level therein and terminating below the normal liquid level, said induction tube being provided With a valve at its submerged end to regulate the passage of chemical therethrough, said valve being mounted upon the end of a slender rod extending longitudinally of the induction tube and so being adapted to vibrate to prevent the accumulation of sediment, said valve being beveled at the top thereof, substantially as described.
5. In combination, a pair of injectors, a chemical tank provided With an induction tube entering said chemical tank at a point above the normal liquid level therein and terminating belovv the normal liquid level, said induction tube provided With a T- connection, and pipes connecting the suction ends of the injectors with said T-connection, the How of chemical to said injectors being controlled by the vacuum produced in the respective injectors, substantially as described.
