CALVIN S. MORRIS, OF ST. LOUIS, MISSOURI.
TRAVELING-CASE.
SPECIFICATION forming part of Letters Patent No. 722,604, dated March 10, 1903.
Application filed December 27, 1902. Serial No. 136,863. (No model.)
invented new and useful Improvements in Traveling-Cases, of which the following is a specification.
My invention relates to new and useful improvements in traveling-cases especially adapted for use in transporting samples, clothing, &c., from place to place; and its object is to provide a compact device of this character which is adapted to be opened out into preferably five trays, four of which when closed form the cover for the remaining tray.
Another object is to provide a protecting: cover for the top and sides of the case, said cover being integral with the lining of the central tray.
With the above and other objects in'view the invention consists in the further novel construction and combination of parts hereinafter more fully described and claimed, and illustrated in the accompanying drawings, showing the preferred form of my invention, and in which- Figure 1 is a perspective View showing my improved case closed. Fig. 2 is a similar View with the central or bottom tray open. Fig. 3 shows all of the trays of the device open, and Fig. 4 is a section through the device when the trays are in the positions shown in Fig. 3.
Referring to the figures by numerals of reference, 1 is a central tray of suitable size having a shoulder 2 extending therearound upon the inner surfaces thereof, said shoulder being adjacent to but removed from the upper edges of the tray. A tray 3 is connected by means of hinges at to the outer edge of the top of each side of tray 1, and each of these trays is cut away at its hinged edge to form a recess 5, which is adapted when the tray is moved into an upright position to receive the upper edge of the side of tray 1 and to rest upon the shoulder 2 therein. The opposite side of each tray 3 is hinged at its upper edge to the upper edge of an end tray 6, preferably substantially similar in size to the tray 3. Trays 6 are adapted to fold over upon trays 3, as illustrated in Fig. 2, and the two sides can then be swung inward upon their hinges 4. As the combined thicknesses thereof 'is equal to the width of the top of tray 1 it is obvious that the bottoms of trays 6 will be brought together and tray 1 will be completely covered, as illustrated in Fig. 1.
Handles 7 may be secured to the outer edges of the bottoms of trays 3 to permit. the case to be readily transported.
A protecting-strip 8 of cloth, leather, or similar material is glued or otherwise secured upon the bottom and sides of tray 1 and serves as a lining therefor. This strip is folded over the shoulders 2 and edges of the side walls and thence downward upon the outer surfaces of said sides to the bottom edges thereof, as illustrated at 9. At these points the strip is folded upon itself and is glued or otherwise secured to the bottoms of the trays 3 and 6 to the adjoining sides thereof, as shown at 10, and to the outer sides 11 of the trays 6. It is obvious that this pro tecting-strip will seal the points of connection between'the trays and will prevent the admission of dust, moisture, &c.,when closed. Each of-the trays 3 and 6 is also provided with a suitable lining 12.
In the foregoing description I have shown the preferred form of my invention; but I do not limit myself thereto, as I am aware that modifications may be made therein without departing from the spirit or'sacrificing any of the advantages thereof, and I therefore reserve the right to make such changes as fairly fall within the scope of my invention.
Having thus described the invention, what is claimed as new is- 1. In a case of the character described, the combination with a central tray having shoulders therein upon the sides thereof; of a series of trays hinged to each side of said central tray, the trays of said series being hinged together and adapted to fold upon each other and inward upon the shoulders to form the top of the central tray, a lining-strip secured within the central tray and extending over the sides thereof, said strip being also fastened upon the side trays and serving to seal the joints therebetw'een.
2. In a case of the character described, the combination with a central tray; of a series of trays hinged to the sides thereof and adapted to fold inward and form the top of In testimony whereof I affix my signature the central tray, and a lining-strip secured in presence of two witnesses.
within the central tray and upon the opposite surfaces of the sides thereof, said strip ex- CALVIN MORRIS tending over the bottoms and the adjoining Witnesses:
