Be it known that l, SAMUEL JONES, a citizen of the United States, residing at Whatcheer, in the county of Keokuk and State of Iowa, have invented a newV and useful Pick, of which the following is a specification'.
This invention relates to improvements in picks.
The object of the present invention is to improve the construction of that class of picks having detachable pick-heads and to provide' a simple, strong, and durable one of inexpensive construction which will be perfectly balanced and in which the wear on the contactsurfaces may be readily taken up to maintain the pick-head firm on the handle.
A further object of the invention is to provide a pick of this character in which the pick-head will bel of extreme simplicity of construction to enable it to be readily forged; and another object of the invention is to provide a pick-head clamp adapted to be readily cast and easily annealed and which will require little or no grinding.
The invention consistsin the construction and novel combination and arrangement of parts hereinafter fully described, illustrated in the accompanying drawings, and pointed out in the claims hereto appended.
In the drawings, Figure l is a plan View of a pick constructed in accordance with this in- -vention. Fig. 2 is a sectional View of the same,
taken longitudinally of the handle of the pick. Fig. 3 is a detail View of the clamp. Fig. 4 is a longitudinal 'sectional view illustrating another form of clamp. Fig. 5 is a detail view of the clamp shown in Fig. 3. Fig. 6 is adetail View of the pick-head.
Like numerals of reference designate correspending parts in all the figures of the drawings. l designates the simpler form of the clamp for connecting the pick-head 2 with the handle 3, and the said clamp, which preferably consists of an annealed casting, but which may be constructed in any desired manner, is provided with an eye 4 for the reception of the handle, and it has a recess 5 for the pick-head 2. The recess is formed by an inner or horizontal wall 6 and a side wall 7. The inner wall 6 is provided with a central aperture '7a to enablea wedge tobe driven into the outer end of the handle 3.f0r secur `head firmly connected with the handle of the pick. The side wall 5 of the clamp is arranged in a plane parallel with the plane of the pick, and it presents a flat face to the pick-head, which is provided with a notch or recess 9 for the reception of the side wall of the clamp. The notch or recess 9 has a flat face to fit against the side wall 5, and it forms end shoulders 10 to engage the end edges of the side wall.
The pick-head is secured to the clamp by means of a transverse screw 11, passing through a central opening 12 of the pick-head andexten'dingintoa threaded aperture 8a of the side wall 5, as clearly shown in Fig. 2.
-The screw is provided at its outer end'with a head having polygonal faces to receive a wrench and seated in a recess or enlargement of the opening 12. The ends of the side wall are beveled to form a tapered or wedge-shaped portion to fit the notch or recess 9, and the end walls or shoulders 10 of the latter are beveled to conform to the configuration of the side wall of the clamp and to enable the parts to be tightly wedged together when assembled. The screw is adapted to be tightened, and it will enable the wear of the contact-s urfaces to be readily taken up.v
The side wall is preferably enlarged or thickened around the threaded aperture 8l to form an exterior boss, and it is provided at its inner face with a pair of projecting tapering lugs or studs 13 of approximately conical form, which when the parts are assembled fit in corresponding sockets 14 of the pick-head, and the said sockets 14 are located at opposite sides of the central opening 12, as clearly shown in Fig. 6 of the drawings. These lugs or studs, which may consist of pins or be cast integral with the clamp, are adapted to firmly IOO support the pick-head and prevent the same from pulling E or twisting when the operator pulls upon the handle.
In Fig. 4 of the drawings is illustrated another form of clamp which is constructed substantially the same as that heretofore described With the exception that the pick-headreceiving recess is provided with an outer Wall 15, having a beveled inner face 16 for engaging the outer beveled face of the pickhead. The clamp 17 is adapted for the heavier class-of Work, as it provides a greater support for the pick-head, and the outer Wall is provided with an aperture 19, arranged opposite the aperture 2O of the inner Wall 21 and adapted to enable a Wedge to be driven into the handle 22 for securing the same in the eye 23. The screw 24,Which secures the pickhead to the clamp, is adapted to draw the former tightly Within the tapered recess of the clamp. The side Wall of the recess of the clamp has beveled ends 25 to iit the beveled shoulders of the notch or recess of the pickhead.
It will be seen that the pick, which is especially adapted for mining or cutting coal, is simple and comparatively inexpensive in construction, that it possesses great strength and durability, and that the pick head is held firmly connected with the handle, as all Wear of the contact-surfaces may be readily taken up. It will also be clear that by the construction for connecting the pick-head With the handle the pick is evenly balanced, as no excess of metal is required at any point to reinforce the construction. Furthermore, it will be clear that owing to the great simplicity of the pick-head the same is easily forged and that the clamp-castings are of a form which may be easily made and annealed and which requires little or no grinding.
1. A pick comprising a clamp consisting of a single piece of metal and provided with an inner longitudinal handle-receiving eye and having a recess arranged at the outer end of the eye and disposed at right angles to the same, said recess being open at the side, and
a pick-head secured within the recess of the clamp and having one of its side faces interlocked with the side Wall of the recess, substantially as described.
2. A pick comprising a clamp having a handle-receiving eye and provided with a pickhead-receiving recess open at the side,the side Wall at the opposite side of ,the recess being beveled at the ends, and a pick-head arranged in the said recess and provided at its inner face with a beveled notch receiving the beveled side wall ot' the recess, substantially as described.
3. A pick comprising a clamp having an eye for the reception of a handle and provided with a recess located at the outer end of the eye and open at one side, the inner Wall of the recess being provided with an aperture communicating with the said eye, and a pickhead arranged in the recess and having its inner side interlocked with the side Wall, substantially as described. c Y
4. A pick comprising a clamp having an eye and provided at the outer end thereof with a pick-head-receiving recess open at one side and provided in its inner Wall with an aperture communicating With the eye, the side Wall of the recess being provided with inwardly-extending lugs, a pick-head having sockets receiving the lugs, said pick-head being arranged in the said recess, and a transverse fastening device passing through the pick-head and the side Wall of the recess, substantially as described.
5. A pick comprising a clamp having an eye and provided at the outer end thereof with a recess arranged at right angles to the eye and open at one side, said recess being provided at its inner and outer Walls with alined openings, a pickhead arranged in the recess and interlocked With the side Wall of the same, and means for securing the pick-head in the recess, substantially as described.
6.
