SPECIFICATION forming part of Letters Patent No. 722,406, dated March 10, 1903.

To all whom, it may concern:
Be it known that I, ERNEST HEIDMAN, a citizen of the United States,residing at New York, in the county of New York and State of New York, have invented certain new and useful Improvements in Locks, of which the following is a specification, such as will enable those skilled in the art to whichit appertains to make and use the same.
The object of this invention is to provide an improved lock which is simple in construction and operation and which may be applied to a door, gate, hinged window, or other device of this class and which is provided with a key of special constructionby' which it may be operated; and with this and other objects in View the invention consists-in a-lock and key of the class specified constructed as hereinafter described and claimed.
The invention is fully disclosed in the following specification, of which the accompanying drawings form a part,'in which the separate parts of my improvement aredesignated by suitable reference characters in each of the views, and in which Figure 1 is a front View of my improved lock applied to a door or a part thereof; Fig. 2, a side view thereof; Fig. 3, an inside view of the lock-casing with the back plate removed; Fig. 4, a section on the line 4 4 of Fig. 3; Fig. 5, a section on the line 5 5 of Fig. 3; Fig. 6, aside view of a key which I' employ; Fig. 7, an outside end view of a key bushing or casing connected with the lockcasing and through which the key in the operation thereof is passed, the key being shown therein with the outer end thereof broken away; Fig. 8, a similar view of a part of the lock in connection with which the end of the key operates; Fig. 9, a section on the line 9 9 of Fig. 6, and Fig. 10 a section on the line 10 10 of Fig. 6.
In the drawings forming part of this specification I have shown at a a part of a door, and in the practice of my invention I provide alock comprising a main casing 0. and a back plate a and said back plate is provided with a key bushing or casing a, which passes through the door in the form of construction Serial No. 129,783 (No ma i.)

It will be understood that the casing is secured to the inner side of the door, and the main part a thereof is provided with alongitudinal slot or opening a having at its rear end a downwardly-directed extension a ,-and mounted on the main casing a is a knob 0, having a shank-c which passes inwardly through the slot a and is provided at its inner end with a cross-head 0 The main casing is also provided with two bolts d, which pass through a keeper 01*, to which are secured springs (1 which are also connected with the inner ends of said bolts at d and said bolts are provided with the usual beveled heads d which pass through the face of the main casing a of the lock and'are adapted to engage the catchplate (1 secured to the door-frame in the usual manner and as indicated in Fig. 5, a part of the door-frame being shown at 61 Each of the bolts d is also provided with an inwardly-directed pin (1 in connection with which the cross-headc operates, and by moving the knob c longitudinally and backwardly the cross-head 0 will operate in connection with the pins d to force the bolts (1 backwardly, and when the knob c is at the limit of its backward movement it'is pressed downwardly, so that the neck 0 thereof enters the downwardly-directed extension at of the slot a and the bolts dare locked in their rearmost position, and the door "may be opened and closed, as will be readily understood.
Secured to the inner side'of the main casing a or formed integrally therewith is a block 6, onwhich is pivoted at e an arm 6 provided with a longitudinal slot 6 in which works a pin 6 secured to the bottom bolt d, and the arm 6 is provided in line with the pivot-point c with a cylindrical projection 6 on which is mounted a supplemental armf, provided with a slot f which receives a pin f ,secured to the upper bolt d, and said arms e and f range transversely of said bolts, the arm 6 extending across the lower bolt (1 and the armfacross both of said bolts, and said arm f is also provided with a circular head f through which the cylindrical projection e of the arm 6 passes.
I also provide a key I), comprising a head b and a fiat metal shank b the end of which is provided with oppositely-directed edgewings which, together with the shank 5 are cut off at the corners, as shown at 17 so as to provide a central projection b and two side projections Z)". The central projection b is adapted to enter a corresponding recess gin the cylindrical projection e, and the side projections b are adapted to enter corresponding recesses g in the head f of the arm f, said recesses being clearly shown in Fig. 8, where they are provided with reference-let ters, and being also shown in Fig. 4 with the key or the parts thereof in position. The outer end of the bushing or casing a is provided with an N-shaped slot or recess 9 and the shank b of the key is provided adjacent to the head 29 thereof with side wings g and the shank of the key is provided at this point with a transverse slot or opening g and the wings g are cut out transversely to form corresponding notches or recesses g. It will be seen that wings b at the end of the shank of the key are of the same form as the Wings g and in practice the key is passed inwardly through'the bushing or cylindrical casing a, and the projections b and b at the end thereof engage with the corresponding recesses g and g in the cylindrical member e of the arm 6 and the heady of the arm f, and in this voperation the wings 9 also pass into the outer end-of the bushing or casing a as shown in the drawings, and in this position of the parts the key may be partially turned, 'or through an arc of ninety degrees, the position of the key when so turned being indicated in Fig. 7, in which the outer end of the key is broken away. In this operation the arms e andf are both turned backwardly, and the bolts 61 are correspondingly operated, and the door will be unlocked, as will be readily understood, and when the pressure on the key is removed or the said key is turned in the opposite direction the springs d operate so as to again project said bolts.
It will be understood that my improved lock is intended principally for a night-lock and to be used in connection with an ordinary lock in the usual manner; but it will also be understood that my improved lock may be used wherever a device of this class is desired. It will also be understood that when the knob c is in the position shown in Fig. 3 the door will be locked, and the door may be unlocked by manipulating the knob c from the inner side of the door whenever desired, and the bolts 61 may be secured in the open or withdrawn position, in which the door may be opened and closed without reference to the lock, or whenever it is desired to use the key for the purpose of securing or locking the door the knob 0 must be placed in theposition shown in Fig. 3, and the door may then be unlocked from the outer side by meansof the key, or it may be unlocked from the inside by means of the knob c.
Having fully described my invention, what I claim as new, and desire to secure by Letters Patent, is
1. A lock comprising a main casing and a back plate having a key bushing or casing through which a key may be inserted, said main casing being provided with two springprojected bolts, a knob mounted on the main casing and provided with a shank which passes through a longitudinal slot formed therein and the rear end of which is provided with a downwardly-directed extension, said shank being provided at its inner end with cross-heads and said bolt with pins in connection with which said cross-heads operate, and two pivoted arms arranged transversely of said bolts and provided with longitudinal slots through each of which a pin connected with one of said bolts passes, and a key adapted to be passed through the key bushing or casing and operate said arms, substantially as shown and described.
2. A look of the class described provided with two spring-bolts, two pivoted arms designed to operate said bolts one of said arms being provided with a head and the-other with a cylindrical projection which passes therethrough, said head and said projection being provided, the first with two recesses and the second with a transverse recess, and a key the shank of which is provided with oppositely-directed wings, said shank and said wings being cut away to form three projections adapted to enter said recesses, substantially as shown and described.
3. A lock of the class described provided with a key bushing or casing, two spring-bolts and two pivoted arms designed to operate said bolts one of which is provided with a head and the other with a cylindrical projection which passes therethrough, said head being provided with two recesses and said projection with one recess, the key bushing or casing beingalso provided at its outer end with an N- shaped slot or opening, and a key the shank of which is provided at the end thereof with side wings which project in opposite directions, said shank and said wings being cut away to form three projections adapted to enter said recesses, and the said shank of the key adjacent to the head thereof being also provided with oppositely-directed wings and with a central transverse opening, and said wings being also cut away centrally to form recesses, substantially as shown and described.
4.
