SPECIFICATION formingpart of Letters Patent No. 722,221, dated March 10, 1903.

Be it known that I, SARAH SOPHIA FREE- MAN, a citizen of the United States, residing at Lincoln, in the county of Lancaster and State of Nebraska, have invented a new and useful Dressmakers Ruler, of which the following is a specification.
The invention relates to a dressmakers ruler.
The object of the present invention is to embody in one device a series of universal curves which will include all the curves of the human form and which will afiord all that is required to outline any design or pattern for cutting any garment to fit the individual form of any size.
The invention consists in the construction and novel combination and arrangement of parts hereinafter fully described, illustrated in the accompanying drawings, and pointed out in the claim hereto appended.
In the drawings, Figure l is a plan View of a dressmakers ruler constructed in accordance with this invention. Fig. 2 is an edge view.
Like numerals of reference designate corresponding parts in both figures of the drawings.
1 designates a dressmakers ruler curved longitudinally and widened near the center at 2. From the widest point of the ruler the side lines 2 and 3 extend in differential curves, slowly converging toward the end A of the ruler, each curve having a multiple of radii and the radii of both curves being located on the same side of the ruler. The curved line 2 presents a convex edge, and the opposite side line 3 presents a concave edge. The ruler also tapers from the widest point toward its other end 5, one side, 6, being formed in a curve and the other side, 7 being straight. Starting from the widest portion of the ruler and extending toward the end 4: is a curved slot 8, having side lines or edges 9 and 10, formed in differential curves starting from one end 11 of the slot and diverging on short radii for a distance and then slowly converging in differential curves to a common point 12 at the other end of the slot. At the opposite half or portion of the ruler is located a curved slot or opening l, forming side lines or edges 14 and 15, starting from a common point 16 near one end of the ruler and slowly diverging toward the center of the same, Where they are connected by a curved edge 17. The straight edge 7 at this portion ofthe ruler is provided with a series of graduations 18, which form a measuring-scale.
After a pattern has been drafted in straight lines in accordance with the measurements taken the ruler is employed for constructing the actual lines. The curved edge 2 is used for shaping the back, and the opposite edge 3 is employed for shaping the side portions of the back. The edge 6 forms a dart-curve and is used for shaping the darts of the front of the Waist. The edge 10 forms an arm-curve and is used for shaping the armhole of the front and back. The lower portion of the curve 9 is used for shaping the neck, and the upper portion of the curve 9 is for shaping the shoulder, while the entire edge or curve 9 is also employed for shaping the tops of sleeves. The scalel Sis employed for measuring the patterns in laying off the same for obtaining the proper proportions. The lower inner edge or curve leis a skirt-curve for shaping gores and giving flares at the bottom of skirts and for drawing skirt-darts. It is also used for shaping the bottom edge of skirts and for shaping collars, revers, lapels, pockets, and trimmings. The curve 15 is a sleeve-curve and is used for shaping the sleeve-seams.
What I claim is A device of the class described consisting of an oppositely tapered longitudinallycurved ruler provided at one side with a straight graduated edge and having oppositely-disposed curved slots, one of the slots having inwardly-diverging curved side edges and a connecting curved edge at the inner end of the slot and the other slot having converging end portions, substantially as described.
