IMPROVED SLOTTING-MGHINB.
tlge tlgetnle tetetreh tn in there ettets went :mi mating met ef tlgesnnte TO ALL WHOM IT MAY CONCERN:
Be it known that I, JOSEPH W. M00nE, o`f Combridgeport, in the county of Middlesex, inthe State of Massachusetts, have invented n new and improved Mode of Cutting Key-Seats in Couplings, Gears, te.; and I do hereby declare that the following is a. full and exact description thereof, reference being had to the aecompanying' drawings, and tothe letters of reference marked thereon.
The nature of my inventionconsists in having nn iron plate with an upright standard so arranged as to admit of nn iron-'shaft passing through it into nn oscillating box attached to cl frame, into two upright standards, the whole to be rmly secured to the bed-plate of an iron-planer.
' To enable others skilled in the art to make and use my invention, I will proceed to describe itsconstruction and operation. I I l I construct a plate with an upright standard at the end, ns represented by A and B, Figure No. 1, with a. l
small rib on the bottom,` as represented by G, Figs. Nos. 1 nud 2. On the top ofvplate A is o. raised rib, plnned in beyelled, form,.as represented by F in Nos. 1 and 2. I then-construct a. plete with two standards, as repre- .v sented by G in No., 1, and C 0,*No. 2, which are moved from top to bottom, es represented by i'h in Figure No. 3. I then'mnke a. small iron frame, as represented by O O, for the purpose of holding the oscillating box i' D, as represenftedinmNo. 2. A srew is attached to the iron frame passing up through cap E, on which are two look-nuts 7: c, the object of the screw being to raise thisbox to any position required.- When in position, the j locknuts are rmly screwed down to ccp E, which secures'it to `that position as o gauge until the work is finished;A -I now constructajointed shaft, fm fm. m n, as represented in No. 1; the joint n being square. In the shaft m m m nisthe cutter L. :Letter I represents a, coupling in position for grooving, firmly bolted to the faceplate B. The operetion of my invention is as follows: The machine being firmly bolted to the plnner-bed,ithe square part pf the' jointed shaft n is firmly attached to the tool-stock of the planer. The coupling being in position as required, the planer is put in motion, which carries the machine forward. The tool-stock beingstationary, the shaft is not allowed to move with the machine, and being guided by the voscillating box D, it will readily be seen any depth of groove'cnn be cut by the raising und falling of the tool-stock of the planer.
Who-t I' claim as my invention, and desire to secure by Letters Patent, is- The combination of mechanism ns described,'for the purpose set forth, and for the object specified.
