SPECIFICATION forming part of Letters Patent No. 721,974, dated March 3, 1903.

To all whom it may concern:
Be it known that I, SCOTT A. SMITH, a citizen of the United States, residing at Providence, in the county of Providence and State of Rhode Island, have invented a new and useful Improvement in Apparatus for Mixing Liquids, of which the following is a specification.
This invention has reference to an apparatus in which different grades of oils or difierent kinds of liquids may be thoroughly mixed or matter thoroughly mixed and incorporated with the oils or other liquids so intimately that separation or precipitation may be avoided, or at least materially delayed.
The invention consists in the peculiar and novel construction and the combination of parts whereby portions of the liquid are successively mixed, agitated, and scrubbed, as will be more fully set forth hereinafter.
Figure 1 is a vertical sectional view of the apparatus. Fig. 2 is a horizontal section on the line at x of Fig. 1. Fig. 3 is a horizontal section on the line y y of Fig. 1.

In the drawings, Ct indicates a vessel of preferably cylindrical form; a, the bottom of the vessel; a a drain-pipe provided with a stopcock; a a step-bearing; (1 the upper open end of the vessel, and a a frame secured to the walls of the vessel a near the open end, supporting the journal-bearing a.
The open-ended cylinder 1) is supported in the vessel on by the brackets 11 2), preferably so as to form an annular space b of an area as great or greater than the area of the openended cylinder 1). The shaft 0 is supported in the step a and journaled in the journalbearing a. The pulley c is secured to the shaft 0, and power may be conveyed to the pulley to rotate the same and the shaft 0. The propellers c c c and c are secured to the shaft 0. The propellers c and c are provided with imperforated blades and the propellers c and c with perforated blades.
The object of the invention is to mix and agitate a portion of the contents of the mixing vessel at a time and circulate the contents, so that all the liquid will be successively operated upon.
When my improved apparatus for mixing Serial No. 64,525. (No model.)
liquids is in use, the propeller 0 acts on the liquid to lift the same upward and also forces the liquid outward against the wall of the cylinder b. The propeller 0 having perforated blades, does not exert the same lifting force as does the propeller 0 the blades of which are not perforated. The perforated blades of the propeller c exert a scrubbing action on the liquid, much facilitated by the are partially mixed and then passed through holes of comparatively small diameter, the retardation by friction of the portion in contact with the walls of the holes exerts a scrubbing action on the liquid, particularly oil, by which films are broken up and the atomic mixture is facilitated. The mixed liquids after being acted on by the propeller c are again lifted by the propeller e, having imperforated blades, andare acted on by the propeller 0 having perforated blades, in the same manner as they were by the propeller 0 The somixed liquids are discharged from the upper end of the cylinder 1) upward into the mass of theliquids, which in turn descend in the annular space b to pass into the lower part of the cylinder 1), where they are in their turn subjected to the actions of the propellers above described.
Liquids having little or no affinity and different grades of oils may be thoroughly mixed or finely-divided solids incorporated with the liquids on a large scale.
Having thus described my invention, I claim as new and desire to secure by Letters Patent- 1. The -combination of a containing vessel for liquids, an open-ended tube or cylinder supported within said. vessel with a space below and around the same, a set'of agitating-propellers mounted within said tube or cylinder and rotating therein, the blades of one of said propellers being imperforate while the blades of the next adjacent propeller are perforated and said adjacent pro- IOC pellers operating to act upon the liquid, substantially as and for the purpose set forth.
2. The combination of a containing vessel for liquids, an open-ended tube or cylinder 1), a set of agitating-propellers mounted to rotate Within said tube or cylinder in parallel planes, the blades of one of said propellers being imperforate while the blades of the next adjacent propeller are perforated and said adjacent propellers operating to act upon the liquid, substantially as and for the purpose set forth.
