Description

b @geiten gisten identit.. @ffice LYMAN A. GOUGH, OF YONKERS, NEW YORK.
Letters Patent No. 72,191, dated December 17, 1867.
IMPROVEMENT IN NAPHTHA-BRNER.
Be it known that I, LYMAN A. GOUCH, ot Yonkers, in the county of Westchester, New York, have invented, made, and applied to use s new and improved Nnphtha-Burncr; und I do declnrevthe following to be n. full, clear, und correct description of my invention, reference being had to the accompnying drawings, making pui-t oi' this specification, and to the letters of reference marked thereon, in whichr Figure 1 is a. sectional view of my improved burner. i Figure 2, a front view ofthe same. i
In the drawings like parts of the invention are Vindicated by the same letters of reference.
The nature of my invention consists in certain improvements, ns more fully hereinafter described, in the construction and operation of nin improved naphtha-burncr. 4
To enable those skilled in the nrts'to make and use :ny invention, I will proceed to describe the same.
A shows a tube, formedoi` copper, or any suitable metal, provided with lips a, formed by flattening out the met-nl in process of manufacture. This tube A is also provided with an opening upon its lower end, comnm nicating with the retort B, and into which opening the end of the conical `pointed screw enters.` The tube AA is also slotted upon its sides to receive the ends of the conductor E, as hereinufter described.- B is the retort to receive the liquid from which the gas is generated by heating, which retort maybe brazed on to the bottom ot' the tube A. The retort is provided nt its buck with :1n opening, communicating with the opening in the tube A, through which opening the gas generated in the retort enters the tube A. G is n cup, placed upon thennder side of retort, to receive alcohol, or any suitable inflammable mutter, to hcatzthe retort B, before the burner is lighted, and cause gas to be generated from nnphthn, or other like iluid`introducetl into the retort. D is a thumb-screw, provided with a. conical end, inserted in bottom of retort, `'which 'screw serresto` regulate the communication between the retort and tube, as when screw D is fully inserted, its conical end enters the opening in bottom of tube A, cutting oid` all communication between the spine and the retort B. E is a conductor, fermento? round copper wire, in the shape of n yolk, and so constructed tht when placed over' the tube A, and its ends have entered the side openings in tho same, it shall tit snugly into the space between the lips a, closing the sumo. The conductor thus extends from the throat down upon each side of the tube'A. This conductor is made suiciently long and heavy to conduct the amount of bent required to heat the retort, so that gas muy beV generated from the liquid introduced into the same. ,i
Such being the construction of my improved naphthu-burner, the operation may be thus described: The burner may be attached to a. tube provided with a reservoir to receive the naphtha to be supplied to the retort B. The retort being supplied with naphthn, the screw D being inserted so that communication between the retort and tube is interrupted, the cup C is filled with alcohol. Thc'alcohol being lighted, the retort is heted until gas is generated from the naphtha, or similar fluid contained in the 'rctortd 4-When this is done, the screw D is unscrewed, opening communication between the retort und the tube, and allowing 7the gas generated in the retort to pass through the tube to the throat, where itmny be ignited. As the gas domes in contnet with the conductor, placed as shown, it is thrown out upon each side of the conductor, and is thus supplied to the fiume, so that there arefour jets, Vtwo at euch side of the throat. ihe conductor takes up from the llame and conducts suiiioient heat to the retort to heat the same, so that as fresh napllthu, or similar fluid, is introduced into or supplied to the saine, the generation of gas shell go on.
, The conductor is made detachable, so that access is instantly afforded to the tube, nnd particularly to the throat, to clean tho same when required. By 'the use of n burner for burning naphtha and like iuids, constructed asjust described, the quantity of light obtained is greatly increased, thc consumption of any impurities is accomplished, und the clogging up of the tube or throat is ina. great measure prevented. Y
Having thus described my present invention, what I claitn'ns new, and desire to secure by-LettersPatcnt, is
The detachable conductor, in combination with a burner constructed and operating substantially as described.
