Inventor UNITED STATES PATENT OEEICE.
WILLIAM FISKE, or LOWELL, MASSACHUSETTS.
IMPROVEMENT IN SEWING-MACHINES.
Specification forming part of Letters Patent No. 72, 180, dated December 17, 1867.
' To all to whmn these presents shall come:
Be it known that I, WILLIAM FISKE, of Lowell, in the county of Middlesex and Commonwealth of Massachusetts, have invented a new and Improved Method of Feeding Fabric while being Stitched by a Sewing-Machine; and I hereby declare that the following speciflcation, in connection with the accompanying drawings and references marked thereon, constitutes a clear and exact description of the construction, operation, and application of the same.
In referring to said drawings, Figure 1 represents a side view, and Fig. 2 the plan or top view, of my machine, Similar letters on both figures denoting the same object.
Invention.
` The nature of my invention consists in imparting motion to a table or support on which lies the fabric while being stitched.
Construction.
To enable others to make and use my invention, I will now proceed to describe its construction.
I take a sewing-machine, A, of any desired pattern or make, and put it upon the frame B B B.
The shaft O rst receives motion, and transmits the same to the machine A, first, by means of belt D, to shaft E, which gives motion to shaft F by means of a connected worm and worm-gear upon said shaft, shaft F at the same time carrying the table G forward by means of a cord, H, which is passed over the pulley I and fastened to each end of the table G; secondly, by means of belt J J, which communicates to'shaft F (after the communication between worm and Worm-gear on shafts E and F has been discontinued by means of a shipper, K, hereafter described) Ja quick and reversed motion, which carries the t-able G back after having run the length of the fabric.
L L are carriers for belt J J.
The shipper K, operated by hand or foot, is to throw the worm on shaft E out of gear with the worm-gear on shaft F, and at the same time to tighten belt J, which, by means of pulley I, carries the table G back.
M M2 is a double shipper, which, with pulley N, attached to shipper M, tightens belt D when drawn toward said belt.
The sewing-machine, shaft O receives mo tion through belt P and pulleys Q and It, when belt D is held tight; when loosened by ship per M M2 being reversed, a friction or brake, S, on shipper M2 is brought in contact with a detent, T, on balance-wheel U, by which means the needle, land also the presser-foot V, are held up, while the table G with the work is carried back under them.
W W are rails, on which the table traverses.
The belt P runs over the tightener-pnlley Q2 and back over pulley Q.
The pulley Q2 may be adjusted to increase the adherence of the belt on the pulley Q.
The double groove in pulley Ql is to prevent the belt from crowding or chopping.
The spring Q3 supports pulley Q2, and maintains the belt P at a given tension by taking up the stretch of the belt.
Dsclaim.
I do not claim a sewing-machine for stitching large fabrics, as that is a well-known mechanism neither do I claim a table for supporting said fabric, as it appears that that is well known neither do I claim feeding the tablewhen fed by the feed of the sewing-machine proper.
It will readily be seen that feeding the cloth or fabric by the feed of the sewing-machine proper subjects the machinefeed to an undue strain, and draws the cloth or fabric out of line, the cloth being supposed to be heavy, and also the table; but by feeding the table in the manner described I getan even draw upon the table, which carries the cloth, not by uneven pulls or jerks, as when drawn by sewingmachine feed, but by an even draft by means of worm and worm-gear, which carries the table, the table carrying the cloth or fabric.
I claim and desire to secure by Letters Patent- l. The combin ation of a sewin g-machine with a movable table by means of cord II and pulley I and shaft F, worm and worm-gears on shafts E and kF, and 'oord J J with shaft C,
substantially as herein set forth and described.
2. The band P on pulleys It an 1Q,Wi th tightener Q2, Fig. l, for transmitting power from shaft E to shaft O, substantially as set forth, and for the purpose described.
3. I claim the shipper M, tightener N, bel-t D, shafts, E F, and cord H, for the purpose herein set forth.
4. I claim the brake S on shipper M2, in connection With detent T and balance-Wheel U, es fully set forth, and for the purposes described.
WILLIAM FISKE.
