COMBINATION-TRAY FOR HOLDINGCIGARS.
SPECIFICATION forming part of Letters Patent No. 721,566, dated February 24:, 1903.
pplication filed August 4.1902.
To all whom it may concern,.- k
Be it known that I, JACOB A. HYLE, a citizen of the United States, residing at Altoona, in the county of Blair and State of Pennsyl- Vania, have invented certain new and useful Improvements in Combination-Trays for Holding Cigars, Matches, Toothpicks, dac.; and I do declare ,the following to be a full, clear, and exact description ofthe invention, such as will enable others skilled in the art to which it V-appertains to make and use the same, reference being had to the accompanying drawings, and to the figures of-reference marked thereon, which form a part of this specification.
My invention relates to combination-trays designed for holding cigars, matches, toothpicks, &c. and the object of the samel is to provide a simple and convenient'dev'ice for serving cigars, matches, dac., at tables in hotels, cafs, restaurants,1barrooms, or at dining-tables in ,privatehouses and toprovide a tray for this purpose which shall be of ornamental `but simple construction, which shall be convenient in use, and which may be manufactured at slight cost. Y
In the accompanying drawings, Figure lis a side elevation of a combination-tray made in accordance with myinvention. Fig. 2 isa central verticalsection of the same. Fig. 3V
' is a plan View.
The numeral 1 designates a central standard, which may be in the form of ametal rod having a threaded lower end 2, secured to a suitable base 3 by means of a nut 4f uAs shown in Fig. 2, the base 3 is hollow and of light sheet metal, and the nutiis of a size toserve as a Weight to give stability to the tray and to prevent it from being 'easily over-f turned. The top 6 of the base 3 is slightly concave or dished to hold lighted cigars placed thereon with the lighted end toward the center of thebase, and also to serve as an ashreceiver.- The outer surface of the base 3 is roughened, as at 7, to serve as a matchscratcher.
Above the base 3 a tray or holderY 8 is seated on a shoulder 9, formed on the standard 1, said tray being loosely mounted on the Serial No.. 118.281. (No model.) r J standard, so that it may be rotated to serve persons sitting around the table. This tray consists, as shown, of a hollow metal cylinder having a bottom 10, an annular rim 1l, and a top or cover 12. The top 12 is provided with a series of perforations 13 t0 accommodate the tapering cigar-holding tubes 14., and perforations 15 are formedA in the'bottom 10, inline with the tubes 14,`t0 hold the pointed end Vofvthecigar in place inthe tray, said perforations 15 also serving as drainage-openings to keep the tubes 14 in a drycondition. There are six of the'tubes 14 shown in the drawings; but it Will be understood that any .p
desired number may be utilized. Receptacles 16 are provided for matches and toothpicks, said receptacles and the tubes 14 being readily removable from the tray to facilitate cleaning." vThe standard -1 passes through openingsformed in the bottomjll) and the top 12,Y a' tube ,17 surrondingthe 'standard to give strength tothe structure. V'At the up'per end of the standard a removable handle 18 is provided, thus rendering the parts of the device readily detachable for packing and ship- :ping within a small space and to facilitate the operation of cleaning. The rim 1l may .bersuitably ornamented or may be utilized as advertising space.
The base 3 may be made sufficiently heavy to yprevent the tray from being readily overturned.
My invention will be found very desirable in serving-cigars, matches, and toothpicks at tables, and owing to its simple construction andv slight cost should be a useful and orna- I'mental adjunct to the dinner-table.
It will; be understood that slight changes in the details of construction herein'before described may-be resorted toA without depart- A4ing from the spirit and scope of my invention. A
What I desire to claim and secure by Letters Patent is- 1. Ahand portable, combination cigar-tray, consisting of a standard with a handle at its upper end; abase at its lower end which forms an ash-receiver, and receptacle for cigar-butts, and a rotatable tray mounted on said standard at a suitable distance above the base,
and having a number of short vertical tubes, adapted to receive and hold cigars in an upright position, as herein set forth.
2. A hand portable, combination cigar-tray, consisting of a standard having a handle at its upper end; a base at its lower end, which forms an ash-receiver and receptacle for cigarstumps; a rotatable cylindrical tray on said standard having a top and bottom and provided with a number of circular openings in its top, and smaller openings in its bottom in alinement with the upper openings, and cigarholding tubes mounted in said upper openings, as herein set forth.
3. A hand portable, combination cigar-tray, consisting of a standard with a handle at its upper end; a base at its lower end forming an ash-receiver, and cigar-stump receptacle; a rotatable cylindrical tray mounted on the standard and having a top and bottom, with circular openings in the top, and smaller openings in the bottom in alinement with thosein the top, adapted to receive the tips of cigars;
upper end; a base at its lower end forming an ash-receiver, and cigar-stump receptacle, and" having a rough surface on its periphery to scratch matches; a rotatable cylindrical tray having circular openings in its top and holes in its bottom for cigar-tips; tapering removable tubes for holding cigars mounted in said openings in the top; and removable matchholders mounted in said tray; the several parts of the entire device being separable, as herein set forth.
In testimony whereof I affix my signature in presence of two witnesses.
JACOB A. HYLE.
