' IMPROVEMENT INVENTILATING lIUNNBLS.

TO ALL WHOM IT MAY CONCERN: Beit known that I, HUGH BowLBY WILLsoN, of the city and county of New York., in the State of New York, have invented a new and improved Method of Ventilating Railway-Tunnels constructed underneath the streets or other parts of cities and towns; and I do hereby declare that the following is a full and exact description thereof, reference being had to the accompanying drawings, making a part of the speciication', in whieh A represents a cross-section of a. street-railway tunnel." i Y l -B B the columns for receiving and discharging the air in the manner hereinafter speciiethwhich columns it is intended shall be substituted for the lamp and awning-posts before in use, and which may beapplied to any other use, or for ornament and l f l C C are the pipes connecting alternately with the top and bottom, o'rother part of vsuch tunnels, the former n arrangement being preferred. i i

` The nature of r my invention consists in erecting over or near the outer walls of suchrailway-tunnels hollow columns or pillars,constructe'd of iron or other suitable material, and connecting the same on the opposite sides of the tunnel, alternately o r otherwise, with the top and bottom, by means of pipes constructed of any` suitable material, which columns and their connecting pipes may be placed 'as near to each other -as may he deemed necessary to4 secure adequate ventilation.. v

When such railway-tunnels run underneath a street, the columns Inlay be made highly ornamental, and being 4 placed on the sidewalks, near the curb-stones, may be and are intended to be substituted for.` lamp-posts and awning or other posts.

The openings for the ingress, o'f fresh air, and the escape of foul or vitiatedair, may be madeat the bases of the columns, as shown in the drawings, or, the columns being carried up of a sulcient size, and beinglholloww the openings may be made at the capitals or tops, just below the lamps in the case of lamp-posts.

l I do not confine or` limitv myself to any particular size, form, or height of column,`or Ventilating lamp, awning, or other post applicable to the purposes of Ventilating;railway-tunnels in manner specified, nor to any particular material for their construction, or of the connecting-tubes, nor do I claim as new the construction of hollow' lamp, awning, or other posts, pillars, or structures; but

What I do claim as my invention and improvement, is- V 1. The method of apply-ing street-lamp posts, and awning and other usi'ul or ornamental posts, pillars, or structures to the purposes of Ventilating underground railway-tunnels, substantially as within described.

2. I claim thecombination of street-lamp posts, and awning and other posts, pillars, or structures, whether for ornament or usc, with the connecting-tubes of such railway-tunnels, substantially in manner set forth. H UGH B. WILLSON.
