Be it known that I, NELLIE MCCARTHY, a citizen of the United States, residing at Holyoke, in the county ofHampden and Coinmonwealth of Massachusetts, have invented a new and useful l-Iair-Curler, of which the following is a specification.
My invention relates to improvements in devices for producing long curls on the head of a child or grown person in which a long flexible body of yielding material having fasteners and a tape, cord, or string attached thereto are employed; and the object of my improvement is to provide a simple, durable, inexpensive, and efficient hair-curler which can be worn without discomfort, does not injure the hair, and can be readily attached to or detached from the hair. I attain this object by the means illustrated in the accompanying drawings, in which- Fgure l is a perspective view of the haircurler, and Fig. 2 a view showing the method of applying it to the hair.
Similar letters refer to similar parts throughout both views.
A body a is made of some suitable yielding material which will give iiexibility, as felt, cotton rope or wicking, stockinet, and the like. The body shown in the drawings is made in the forni of a textile roll; but such form is not material. Buttons or other suitable fasteners b b are attached to the body a, each a little remote from each end. A cord, string, or tape c, considerably longer than the body a, is attached at one end to the upper part of said body, and this tape may be either elastic or non-elastic, as preferred.
To use my device, wind a strand of hair d around the upper terminal of the body a and then pass the tape c about the hair, preferably above the upper fastener b, around or through which said tape is carried, thus inaking a strong tie at the top which cannot slip down. Next wind the strand spirally around the body and the tape around the hair. Finally pass the tape around or through they lower fastener b and loop it about thebody a below said fastener. The hair is now held tightly to the body, but with an inwardly and outwardly yielding pressure which prevents breaking or otherwise injuring it, and the flexibility of the parts permits the wearer to lie down without inconvenience.: There is practically no danger of accidentally loosening the tape or the hair; but when the latter has been done up a sufficient length of time the tape is untied from the lower terminal of the body, unwound, and unfastened at the top, when the device can be readily removed from the newly-formed curl, which will retain its shape for a long time.
I am aware that curlers having unyieiding and inflexible bodies with elastic cords extending from end to end substantially parallel with the bodies when in use have been made, and I do not seek to cover such acurler.
For the sake of clearness in illustrating the views are made on an enlarged scale.
What I claim as my invention, and desire to secure by Letters Patent, is-
l. The combination, in a hair-curler, of a body of yielding textile material, said body being substantially uniform in size throughout, fasteners on the body near the terminals, and a string, cord or tape attached at one end to the body adjacent to one of said fasteners and adapted to be wound spirally around the body and to engage the other fastener, substantially as shown and described.
2. As a new article of manufacture, a haircurler comprising a dat sheet of textile material formed intoa substantially cylindrical body, having fasteners at the end portions and a tape or string attached at one end substantially as shown.
