APPARATUS FOR DISTRIBUTING GASES.
SPEGIFIGATION forming part of Letters Patent No. 718,941, dated January 20, 1903.

Be it known that 1, WILLIAM H. \VIGMORE, a citizen of the United States, and a resident of the city and county of Philadelphia, State of Pennsylvania, have invented certain new and useful Improvements in Apparatus for Distributing Gases, of which the following is a specification.
My invention relates to improvements in apparatus for disinfecting; and the object of my invention is to furnish an apparatus for the safe carriage and distribution of formanganene or other gases, as will be hereinafter fully described.
In the accompanying drawings, forming part of this specification, Figure 1 is a central sectional elevation of my gas-carrying cylinderin place in the distributing-cylinder, and Fig. 2 side elevations and a plan of the needle for puncturing the gas-carrying cylinder.

In practice I usually charge the cylinder awith a pressure of about twenty pounds to the square inch of gas. The sides of the top I) of the cylinder at are preferably pinched together, as shown, and soldered to form a seal to retain the gas.
The cylinder ct is placed in a distributingcylinder 0, which is furnished at its top with an opening d, through which the gas-carrying cylinder may be inserted or withdrawn, which can be tightly closed by a screw-plug e.
f is a step with flaring sides carried by the bottom g of the cylinder 0, which holds the lower end of gas-cylinder a.
h is a guide-ring, through which the cylinder 0 is passed.
The step f is made with flaring sides, as shown, so that the lower end of the cylinder may be thereby guided to its seat, and this step and the ring h, which engages the cylinder near its top, hold the cylinder a in place within the cylinder 0.
7 is a threaded spindle carried by a threaded bearing j, carried by the cylinder 0.
7c is a gland to prevent leakage past the spindle i, and lis a hand-wheel upon the spindle, by means of which this latter may be turned.
The point in. of the spindle is oval in section, as best shown in Fig. 2, and when the spindle is revolved and driven through the side of cylinder at it reams out a hole of circular section, and as the section of the point is oval or elliptical the gas can pass out the circular hole formed by the turning of the point without first withdrawing the spindle from it.
As soon as the cylinder a is punctured the gas therein contained passes to the interior of cylinder 0, which carries a tube at, closed at the bottom and furnished with small perforations 0 on its sides, which is connected with or terminates in a tube p, which passes out of the cylinder 0 and which is adapted to be connected with a hose which leads the gas to the point where it is to be applied.
The purpose of the perforations 0 in pipe 01 is to cause a substantially uniform mixture of air and gas to pass to the outlet of this pipe from the cylinder 0, these perforations admitting to the pipe at air and gas simultaneously from the upper and lower parts of the cylinder and from several points intermediate of the top and bottom.
0" is a needle-valve by means of which the flow of gas to the tubep may be controlled.
3 is a pressure-gage for indicating the pressure within cylinder a. This gage consists of a glass tube t outside cylinder a, closed at the top and forming part of or connected at the bottom with a tube it within cylinder 0.
At the upper end tube Lt is enlarged or is connected with a tube 22 of greater diameter.
to is a funnel-like tube, the upper part of which engages the inner upper part of the tube '0, as shown, and the lower part of which extends down in this tube.
The upper part of the tube 15 contains air, and the lower part of this tube and the lower part of tubeu contain mercury, while the up per part of tube a is open to theinterior of cylinder 0. The tubetis properly graduated, and the height of the mercury therein indicates the pressure of gas within cylinder a.
The tubes o and w are arranged as shown and described in order that the mercury may not be spilled if the cylinder 0 fall upon its side.
The cylinders a are small and light and can readily be shipped long distances, and they are preferably made of such a size that they will contain sufficient gas for several treatments if the gas be used for medical purposes after their contents have been transferred to the cylinder 0.
Having thus described my invention, I claim as new and desire to secure by Letters Patent- 1. In an apparatus for distributing gas under pressure, in combination, a distributingcylinder furnished with an opening for introducinga gas-carrying vessel, means for tightly closing the opening in said cylinder, means for puncturing said gas-cylinder while within said distributing-cylinder, and a valve-controlled pipe whereby said gas may be withdrawn from said distributing-cylinder.
2. In a gas-distributing apparatus, in combination, a distributing-cylinder furnished at one end with an opening for the introduction of a gas-carrying vessel, means for tightly closing said opening, a step with flaring sides at the bottom of said distributing-cylinder, a guide near the upper end of said cylinder, means for puncturing said gas-cylinder, and
a valve-controlled means for withdrawing the gas from said distributing-cylinder.
In a gas-distributing apparatus, in combi nation, a gas-carrying vessel, adistributingcylinder in which said gas-carrying vessel is placed, means for sealing said distributingcylinder, means for puncturing said gas-carrying vessel while within said distributingcylinder, a valve-controlled tube for withdrawing gas from said distributing-cylinder, and a pressure-gage for indicating the pressure within said distributing-cylinder.
4:. The combination with the distributingcylinder and the gas-carrying vessel, of a threaded bearing carried by the former, a threaded spindle with a point of oval crosssection, and means whereby said spindle may be turned.
