UNirnn STATES PATENT OFFICE.
EDWARD THOMAS HANNAM, OF CINCINNATI, OHIO.
STEAM-BOILER.
SPECIFICATION forming part of Letters Patent No. 718,836, dated January 20, 1903. Application filed July 28, 1902. Serial No. 117,342- (No model.)
To all whom it may concern.-
Be it known that I, EDWARD THOMAS HAN- NAM, a citizen of the United States, residing at Cincinnati, in the county of Hamilton and State of Ohio, have invented certain new and useful Improvements in Steam-Boilers, of which the following is a specification.
The object of my invention is to provide a boiler in which the entering Water will be purified without injury or damage to the boiler. Heretofore pans have been placed in boilers to form, in combination with the walls of the boilers,purifying-receptacles into which the water is first fed upon entering the boiler. By the action of the heat, steam, &c., inthe boiler impurities are deposited in their receptacles, whence they are removed by a blow-off. The action of theseimpurities upon the surfaces in which they come in contact is corrosive, so that the pan and the portions of the walls of the boiler used to form the purifying-receptacles are in a short time destroyed and must be replaced. Thus While protecting some parts of the boiler this form of purifier, in effect, concentrates the impurlties upon a small area of boiler-surface, necessitating frequent renewals and reconstruc tions of the boiler. The principal object of my invention is to prevent this destruction of any portion of the boiler. A further object is to furnish a means for accomplishing this result which may readily be applied to any boiler or removed and renewed when desired without affecting the boiler itself. In order to have the purifier perform its functions as such, it is necessary that it be capable of containing a considerable quantity of water relatively to the total amount of water in the boiler. To this end the purifier is made in sections adapted to pass through the manhole of the boiler and be assembled and mounted afterward.
My invention consists in the combination and arrangement of parts hereinafter described and claimed.
In the drawings, Figure 1 is a side elevation, partly in section, of a horizontal tubular boiler embodying my invention; Fig. 2, a section on line 2 2 of Fig. 1; Fig. 3, a top plan view of my purifying-receptacle; Fig. 4, a side elevation of a horizontal water tube boiler equipped with my invention; and Fig. 5, an end View, partly in section, of a vertical Water-tube boiler also equipped with my invention.
Reference-letter A denotes a boiler; B, a purifier; G, a feed-pipe, and D a blow-off.
The boiler A may be of any of the usual constructions. It is provided with hangers a, upon which the purifier B is supported,
preferably about half in and half out of the water, as shown. made of plates provided with flanges b for securing them together. By making'the purifier in sections I am enabled to take it into the boiler through the usual manhole and set it up inside, or vice versa, so that the purifier may readily be placed in or removed from any boiler. The inlet-pipe O conducts the water into the shallower part of the purifier and discharges it toward the deeper part, thus insuring the complete circulation of the water in the purifier before it flows over the end wall I) and falls into the boiler proper. The bottom of the purifier inclines away from the feed-pipe, and blow-off pipe D connects with it at its deepest part, so that the deposits may be readily blown off.
I claim as my invention- 1. The combination, with a boiler, of a pnrifier made in longitudinal sections adapted to pass through the manhole of the boiler; and means for mounting the purifier in the boiler out of contact with the walls thereof, substantially as specified.
2. The combination, with a boiler, of the purifier B having an inclined and rounded bottom and made in sections adapted to pass through the manhole of the boiler, said sections being provided with flanges b for assembling theinin position; means for mounting the purifier in the boiler out of contact with the walls thereof and partly submerged in the water therein; a feed-pipe entering the shallower part of the purifier; and a blow-off entering the deeper part of the purifier, substantially as specified.
