SPECIFICATION forming part of Letters Patent No. 718,631, dated January 20, 1903.

Be it known that I, lVIANANDER M. JOHN- SON, a citizen of the United States, residing at Clay Center, in the county of Clay and State of Nebraska, have invented certain new and useful Improvements in Brooders; and I do declare the following to be a full, clear, and exact description of the invention, such as will enable others skilled in the art to which it appertains to make and use the same.

My invention is an improved brooder ad apted for protecting young chicks until they are large enough to take care of themselves, to keep them dry and warm, and provide for their proper exercise; and it consists in the peculiar construction and combination of devices hereinafter fully setforth and claimed.

One objectof my invention is to effect improvements in the construction of the brooder to enable the same to be more readily and efficiently cleaned than heretofore.

A further object of my invention is to effect improvements in the construction of the lid of a brooder and to combine therewith a hood which is adapted to be disposed on the outer side of a lamp or other source of heat used for heating the brooder.

A further object of my invention is to provide the lid of the brooder with a radiatingpipe, through which the hot air arising from the lamp passes to effect the thorough distribution of the heat within the brooder and avoid overheating the same.

A further object of my invention is to efiect improvements in the construction of the hover-cloth and the means for securing the same detachably in the brooder.

In the accompanying drawings, Figure 1 is a perspective view of a brooder constructed in accordance with myinvention, showing the lid partly open, the hood raised to uncover the lamp, and the hover-cloth partly raised. Fig. 2 is a similar view of the same, showing the lid entirely opened and the hood raised therewith from the lamp. Fig. 3 is a vertical sectional view showing the lid of the brooder closed, and Fig. at is a similar view taken on a plane at right angles to that of Fig. 3.

The brooder-box lis here shown as of rectangular form and comprises the bottom 2, the side walls 3, and the end walls 4. In the latter at a suitable distance above the bottom Serial No. 125,913. (No model.)

and on their inner sides are vertical recesses 5, which are adapted to receive the projecting ends of a pair of stiffener-bars 6, with which the the hovercloth 7 is provided, whereby the hover-cloth may be disposed in position in the brooder-box and readily removed therefrom. The hover-cloth may be made of any suitable material.

The lid 8 of the brooder-box comprises a pair of sections 9 10. As here shown, the said sections are hinged together, as at 11, and the section 9 is hinged to one side of the brooder-box, as at 12. This enables the section 10 of the lid to be raised without raising the section 9, and hence enables the brooderbox to be partly uncovered. The entire lid may, however, be raised, as shown in Fig. 2. While the lid is herein shown and described as being provided with hinges, the latter may 7 be omitted without departing fromthe spirit of my invention.

The lid of the brooder is provided with a heat conducting and radiating pipe 13, which is here shown as comprising a pair of parallel members 14, connected together at one end by an elbow 15. This heat-radiating pipe is here shown as secured under the sec tion 9 of the lid and as passing through one of the end walls thereof. One of the parallel members of the heat-radiating pipe is provided at its outer end with a downturned elbow 16, and the other is provided at its outer end with an upturned elbow or escapepipe 17. A lamp 18 is here shown for supplying heated air to heat-the interior of the brooder and is disposed without the same at one end thereof and in such position that when the lid is closed the intake-elbow 13 of the heat-radiating pipe will telescope over the upper end of the lamp-chimney. When the section 9 of the lid is opened, the heatradiating pipe becomes disconnected from the lamp-chimney, as will be understood. I do not desire to limit myself to this exact construction of the heat-radiating. pipe nor to its position under the section 9 of the lid, as this may be varied without departing from the spirit of my invention.

To protect the lamp from drafts and prevent the loss of heat, I provide a hood 20. The same is here shown as comprising a pair of wings or sides 21, connected together at IGO one side and disposed angularly with relation to each other. This hood is here shown as connected by hinges 22 at its upper end to the section 9 of the lid, and is hence adapted to be turned down over the lamp when the lid is closed and to be raised and folded back upon the section 9 of the lid in order to uncover the lamp.

One side of the brooder-box is shown as provided with openings 23 to enable the chicks to pass into and out of the brooderbox, and in Figs. 1 and 2 a fence 24 is shown, which may be of any suitable construction and adapted to inclose three sides of a yard, runway, or exercise-ground for the chicks of any suitable size.

It will of course be understood that various changes in the form, proportion, and the minor details of construction may be resorted to without departing from the principle or sacrificing any of the advantages of my invention.

Having thus fully described my invention, what I claim as new, and desire to secure by Letters Patent, is

1. A hovercloth having stiffening bars with projecting ends, in combination with a brooder-box having vertical recesses in its sides to receive the ends of and support the said stifiening bars, substantially as described.

2. A brooder having a lid provided with a 1 hood adapted to inclose a lamp disposed exteriorly of the brooder, substantially as set forth.

3. A brooder having a lid provided with a hood hinged thereto and adapted to inclose a lamp disposed exteriorly of the brooder, substantially as set forth.

4:. A brooder having a lid comprising a plurality of sections, one of said sections being provided with a hood adapted to inclose a lamp disposed exteriorly of the brooder, substantially as set forth.

5. A brooder having a lid composed of a plurality of sections hinged together, one of said sections being hinged to the brooder and having a lamp hood hinged thereto and adapted to be folded thereon, substantially as set forth.

6. I11 combination -with a brooder and a lamp, a lid having a heat conducting and radiating pipe provided with an intake portion adapted to telescope over the upper end of the lamp-chimney when the lid is closed, substantially as set forth.
