DETACHABLE I aolLi-:R-i--LU E.
SPECIFICATION forming part of Letters Patent No. 718,609, dated January 20, 1903.
Application filed May Z7, 1902. Serial No. 109,132. (No model.)
collar 5 is brazed to the end of the ilue 2and To @ZZ whom, it may concern: 13e it known that I, JULIAN F. DRAKE, a citlzen of the United States, residing at Tracy,
in the county of Lyon and State of Minne-v in my prior patent, No. 696,421, of April 1, 1902.
The invention consists of the novel devices and combinations of devices hereinafter described, and defined inthe claim.
The invention is illustrated in the accompanying drawings, wherein like characters indicate like parts throughout both views.
Figure 1 is a view, principally in vertical section, with some parts leftin full and others broken away, showing a flue and novel means for securing the same to the flue-sheets; and Fig. 2 is a face View of the annular clampingnut removed from Working position.
The numeral 1 indicates the Hue-sheets of a boiler and the numeral 2 one of the iiues. At one end the flue is secured to the fluesheet by a novel device, which is the subject of my present invention. As shown in the drawings, this novel device is applied to the left-hand end of the flue, while at its righthand end the flue is shown as connected to the flue-sheet by means of a device which was disclosed and claimed in my prior patent, No. 698,471, dated April29, 1902. This latter device comprises an inwardlytapering or slightly-conical sleeve 3, which is preferably braz'ed to the end of the ue, and a thin packing ring or collar 4, preferably of copper. The said packing-ring 4. is adapted to be tightly pressed between the tapered sleeve 3 and the seat 1a, formed therefor in the right-hand flue-sheet. Since this device forms no part of my present invention, the foregoing brief descriptionthereof is deemed suflcient.
The novel device shown at the left-hand end of the liue comprises thecollar 5, a loose clamping-ring 6, and clamping-nut 7. The
passes through a quite. closely-fitting seat 1b in the left-hand flue-sheet 1. At its outer end the collar 5 is providedwith screw-threads, on which the nut 7 works. The clampingring 6 loosely surrounds the collar 5, between the clamping-nut 7 andthe adjacent iiuesheet, and on its inner edge it is provided with an annular groove,l in which is placed a packing ofasbestos or similar pliable and non-fusible material, (indicated'at 8.)
l As is evident, when the parts are applied as shown in Fig. 1 and the clamping-nut 7 is tightened against the clamping-ring 6 the packing 8 will be tightly compressed both against the Hue-sheet and the collar 5 and will form steamtight joints therewith.
When a number of adjacent iiues of a boiler are applied as above described, the clamping-nuts 7 will come very close together, and hence the said nuts should be made round or of annular form and should be provided with notches or seats 7, to which the pins or lugs of a suitable wrench may be applied to turn the nuts.
In my prior paient, No. 696,421, threads Were cut directly on the ends of the iue. These lthreads of course weakened the iiue more or less. In my present device the threads are cut on. the collar 5, and the said collar reinforces and strengthens the end of the iiue and enables the saine to withstand pounding, such as may be necessary to drive the same out of its seats in the flue-sheets after it has stood for a long time and become corroded and covered with scale.
The seat 1 in the right-hand flue-sheet should be large enough to permit the flue to be withdrawn therethrough when covered with about an eighth of an inch of scale, and it must also, of course, be of such size as to pass the collar 5 when the clamping nut and ring are removed therefrom..
The necessity for frequently removing iiues of boilers, and especially of boilers used in alkali districts, is, as is well known, occasioned by the rapid collection thereon of scale, which greatly reduces the heating efficiency of the boiler.
What I claim, and desire to secure by Letters Patent of the United States, is as follows:
In a boiler, the combination with a Hue- IOO sheet. l lmvingzt flue-seat lb, of the detachable fusible material, tightly pressed against the 1o flue 2, having the permanently and rigidly {lue-sheet and said collar and forming steamsecured collar 5 affording an enlargement tight joints therewith.
thereof and teleseoping through said seat l, i In testimony whereof I aliix my signature the clamping-nut 7 screw-threaded on the g in presence of two Witnesses.
outer end of said collar 5, and the clamping- JULIAN F. DRAKE.
ring 6 loosely fitting said collar 5 between said clamping-nut and said flue-sheet and provided with the annular packing 8 of non- Witnesses:
