NON-REFILLlNG BOTTLE.
`SPECIFICATION forming part of Letters Patent No. 718,407, dated January 13, 1903.

To all whom, it may concern:
Be it known that I, LEwIs E. WENTwoRTH,
a citizen of the United States, residing at Darby, county of Delaware, and State of Pennsylvania, have invented a certain new and useful Improvement in `Non-Reiilling Bottles, of which the following is a specification. Y
My invention relates to a new and useful improvement in non-refilling bottles, and has for its object to provide a bottle which after being once filled and emptied cannot again be refilled. I
With this end in View this invention con! sists in the detailsof construction and combination of elements hereinafter set forth and then specifically designated by the claims.
In order that those skilled in the art to which this invention appertains may understand how to make and use the same, the construction and operation will now be described in detail, referring to the accompanying drawings, forming a part of this specification, in which- Figure l is a Vertical section through the neck of the bottle made according to my -invention; Fig. 2, a similar View to Fig. l, showing the bottle inverted for the purpose of pouring the contents therefrom; Fig. 3 a cross-section on the line .3 3 of Fig. 1; Fig. 4, a cross-section on the line 4 4 of Fig. 1.
In the drawings, A represents the body of the bottle, and B is the neck thereof. Where the neck B joins the body A, it is contracted to form the throat C, which also answers for the valve-seat.

lower end adapted to normally seat in the throat C. The neck B of the bottle is formed with a shoulder E, and resting upon this shoulder E is the liexible circular sheet F,
which has an opening F formed in the center. This flexible sheet F is preferably made of thin rubber, and when in its normal posi-I tion, as shown in Fig. 1, the upper conical end D of the plug D protrudes through the opening F of the sheet F and holds the flexible sheet in position, so that it assumes the form of a truncated cone. Interposed between the rim of the flexible sheet F and the shoulder E are wires G, which extend out horizontally and then are bent down vertically, so as to form a guide for the plug D to cause it'to move centrally of the neck. will now be seen that to empty the bottle it is simply necessary to tilt the same. Then the pressure of the liquid will force the plug D from oif its seat, and the liquid entering the neck of the bottle .will distend the flexible sheet F, as shown in Fig. 2, and the liquid will be free to ow from the bottle; but if an attempt is made to flllthe bottle the liquid coming rst in contact with the flexible sheet F will force that sheet downward in close contact with the plug D, and thus not only in itself prevent the liquid from entering the bottle, but will aid in holding the plug D firmly upon its seatO.
For the purpose of preventing the .manipulating of the valvular parts I provide a fender in the upper end of the neck, this fendery being constructed upon substantially the same principle as the patent allowed to me January 30, 1902, Serial No; 71,117, except in this invention instead of forming the grooves in the neck of the bottle I form the grooves in the plug. H represents the plug, which has an' annular groove I formed around the neck of said plug midway between these two ends, and .I represents a series of vertical grooves formed in the lower half of the plug, and K represent's a series of vertical grooves formed in the upper half of the plug. v The series of grooves K and .I are staggered relative to one another, so as not to make a direct passage downward, as shown in Fig. 3-that is to say, the solid portion between the grooves K will lie above the grooves J, and thus prevent a wire from bein g inserted from the top through the grooves, so as to tamper with the valves. Extending downward from the plug are legs L, which come in contact and rest upon a washer M, placed above the iexible sheet F. Extending upward above the plug H are two or more projections N, which are adapted to come in contact with the spout or nozzle O. This spout or nozzle is formed of sheet metal, which is spun around the outside bead of the bottle after the parts-have all been inserted in place, and in spinning this spout or nozzle will press against the projections N and force all of the parts downward into tight connection. It will thus be seen that it will be an IOO impossibility to force a wire or any other 0bject downward through the fender so as to tamper with the valves.
The advantage of my in vention is that while I provide an efficient, practical, and durable device it is exceedingly simple in construction and can be made at a comparatively small cost, which is very essential in nonreilling bottles.
Of course I do not wish to belimited to the exact construction here shown ,as slight modifications could be made without departing from the spirit of my invention.
Having thus fully described my invention, what I claim as new and useful isl. In a non-relilling bottle, a bodyA, a neck B, said bottle being contracted at the junction ofthe neck and the body so as to form a throat C which answers for a valve-seat, a plug tapered at both ends, a circular iiexible sheet having an opening in the centerand secured at its outer edge to the neck of the bottle, the upper tapering end of the plug adapted to protrude through the opening in the sheet, substantially as and for the purpose specified.
2. In a non-refilling bottle, a body, a neck formed with the body, said bottle being contracted where the neckjoins the body, forming a valve-seat, a longitudinal moving plug tapered at both ends, guideways for guiding the plug in its movements, a circular flexible sheet provided with an opening in the center, a shoulder formed in the neck of the bottle upon which the outer edge of the iiexible sheet rests, a washer arranged over the outer edge of the 'perforated sheet, a fender arranged in the neck of the bottle above the valves, legs depending from the fender and resting upon the Washer so as to hold the parts in place, as and for the purpose specified.
3. In a non-refilling bottle, a body, a neck formed with the body, a valve-seat arranged at the junction of the body and the neck, a valve adapted to said valve-seat, a flexible circular sheet provided with an opening in the center and secured at its outer edge to the neck of `the bottle, said flexible sheet adapted to rest on the valve when in its normal position, a fender arranged in the neck of the bottle above the valves, and a nozzle spun upon the neck above the fender, as and for the purpose specilied.
4. In combination in non-refilling bottles, a body A, a neck B, a valve-seat arranged in the neck, a longitudinally-moving plug tapered at both ends, the lower end adapted to the valve-seat, a shoulder formed in the neck of the bottle, a circular flexible sheet provided With a central opening, its outer edge adapted to rest upon the shoulder and its central portion coming in contact with the upper tapering end of the valve-plug, guidewires interposed between the outer edge of said sheet and the shoulder adapted to guide the plug in its movements, a washer arranged above the outer edge of the flexible sheet, a plug arranged in the neck of the bottle above the valves, legs depending from the plug and coming in contact with the washer, an annular groove formed around the periphery ofthe plug, a series of vertical grooves formed in the periphery of the lower half of the plug, a series of vertical grooves formed in the periphery ofthe upper half of the plug, said upper and lower series of grooves staggered relative to one another, projections extending upward from the plug, a cap or nozzle having a contracted mouth spun around the bead at the upper end of the neck and pressing against the projections so as to hold all parts securely in place, substantially as specified.
