SEECIFCATION :forming part of Letters Patent No. 718,362, dated January 13, 1903.
Application filed July 22, 1902.
To all whom it may concern.-
Be it known that we, WALTER LORD LE MAITRE, FREDERIC GEORGE WILLIAM PAR- KER, and EDGAR RHODES, subjects of the King of Great Britain and Ireland, residing at Greek Street Chambers, Leeds, in the county of York, England, have invented a certain new and useful Appliance for Cutting Off the Upper or Wearing Portions of Compound Tramway-Rails, (for which. We have made application for a patent in Great Britain, No. 9,176, bearing date April 21, 1902,) of which the following is a specification.
This invention relates to a new or improved appliance for cutting off the upper or Wearing portions of compound tramway-rails on the same becoming worn out in a speedy and efficient manner, and this without disturbing the base or foundation portions of the rails.

In the drawings, Figure 1 is an elevation,
partly in section, of an appliance constructed according to our invention applied to a compound tramway-rail; and Fig. 2 is a plan view of the same appliance and rail. Fig. 3 shows in side elevation, to a reduced scale, an example of the general application of our appliance to compound tramWay-rails.
Referring to the drawings, 1 represents the carrying-frame of the appliance, provided with supporting-rollers 2 2 2 2, whose bearings are attached to screwed studs 3 3 3 3, through the medium of which the said rollers may be adjusted in height. The frame 1 is also provided with guide-rollers 4 5 6, which are mounted on tubular shafts 7 8 9, and through these tubular shafts are fitted stu-ds Serial No. 116,497. (No model.)
10 11 12, on the lower ends of Which are mounted auxiliary guide rollers 13 14 15, which latter are free to revolve on their respective studs 10 11 12. The guide-rollers 4 6 and 13 14 15 are serrated or roughened on their periphery, and the studs 1011 12 are screwed attheir upper ends and provided with nuts 16 17 18, whereby the said studs maybe raised or lowered in their tubular shafts 7 8 9 in order to adjust the height of the auxiliary rollers 13 14 15. The tubular shaft 7, carrying the stud and guide-roller 4, is mounted in an eccentric bearing 19, provided with an arm 20, and on the frame 1 is fixed a bracket 2l, provided with a set-screw 22, which latter engages the arm 2O of the bearing 19 to operate the latter, and so vary the position of the roller 4 as desired.
On the frame 1, at one side thereof, are located steel disk cutters 23 24 25, mounted in sliding bearings 26 27 28, and set-screws 29 30 31 are employed, respectively, in connection with the said bearings, whereby 'the cutters 23 24 25 may be adjusted in a forward direction at will.
On the tubular shaft 9 of the roller 6 is mounted a spur-Wheel 32, which is driven by a spur-pinion 33, carried on a shaft 34which latter is driven by suitable speed-gearing, as hereinafter described, whereby the said roller 6 is caused to rotate.
The appliance is mounted upon a face-plate 35 of a traveling bogie 36, the said face-plate having slots 37 provided with T-headed bolts 3S, which pass through a projecting iiange` 39, formed on the back of the carrying-frame 1, whereby the latter is secured in position.
The bogie 36 in addition to carrying the appliance carries a motor for driving the shaft 34, consisting of a boiler`40rand an engine 41, which latter is provided with a driving-shaft 42, extending across the front of the bogie 36 and being carried in end bearings 43, attached to the platform/.of the said bogie. the driving-shaft 42 is mounted a sprocketwheel 44, which, through the medium of a chain 45, drives a sprocket-wheel 46, located on a stud 47, carried by a bearing 48, situated on the frame 1 of the appliance, and the said stud 47 also carries a worm 49, which gears with a worm-wheel 50, mounted on the IOO shaft 3, whereby the desired rotary motion is imparted to the gear-wheels 32 33 and serrated rollers 6 and 15.
The operation of cutting off the upper or wearing portions of compound tramway-rails is as follows: The bogie 36 is placed upon the rails, which latter consist of upper or wearing portions 51 and their base or foun dation portionsf52, the appliance being located over one of the rails, with its supporting-rollers 2 2 2 2 resting upon the upper surface of the rail and the guide-rollers 4 5 and auxilary guide-rollers 13 14C located on one side of the rail and the guide-roller 6 and. auxiliary guide-roller 15 on the other side thereof. The engine is now put in motion, whereby the geared roller 6 is caused to revolve through the medium of the speed-gearing above described, when the set of rollers et 5 6 are forced tight onto the upper sides of the rail by rotating the eccentric bearing 19 of the roller 4c through the medium of the set-screw 22, while the auxiliary guide-rollers 13 1-l 15 are set up to the flanges of the upper portion 51 of the rail by adjusting the height of the studs 10 11 12 through the medium of the nuts 16 17 1S, after which the disk cutters 23 2l 25 are fed into the side or flange of the upper or wearing por tion 51 of the rail by means of the set-screws 29 30 81. The rollers 4 5 G, by reason of their grip or frictional contact on the rail, cause the bogie 3(5,with its appliance, to travel along the rails, when the cutters 23 24 25, which are fed forward in step-like order, cutinto and sever the flange ot' the wearing portion 51 of the rail, and this without disturbing the base or foundation portion 52. After one of a pair of rails has been treated in the manuel' above described the appliance may be transferred across the face-plate 35 of the bogie 36 into position to opera-te upon the other rail, or, if desired, the bogie 36 may be itted with two cutting appliances ofthe above-described construction, one for each rail, whereby the top portions of both rails may be cut through si- 1n ultaneously.
Having now described our invention, what we claim as new, and desire to secure by Letters Patent, is-
l. An appliance for the purpose specied, comprising a carrying-frame provided with supporting-rollers arranged to engage the upper surface of the rail, a set of serrated or roughened guide-rollers situated so as to cause them to grip the sides of the rail, and a series of disk cutters so located and operated as to cut into and divide the upper portion of the rail longitudinally into two parts, substantially as described.
2. An appliance for the purpose specified, comprisinga carrying-frame provided with supportingrollers mounted in adjustable bearings, aset of serrated or roughened guiderollers located on carrying-studs, a series of disk cutters mounted in adjustable sliding bearings, means for adjusting the serrated guide-rollers up to the sides of the rail and mechanism for rotating the said guide-rollers, substantially as described.
3. An appliance for the purpose specified, comprising a carrying-frame provided with supporting rollers mounted in adjustable bearings, a set of serrated or roughened guiderollers mounted on tubular shafts carried upon adjustable studs provided with auxiliary guide-rollers, a series of disk cutters mounted in adjustable bearings, means for adjusting the serrated guide-rollers up to the sides of the rail and mechanism for rotating the said guide-rollers, substantially as described.
4. An appliance for the purpose specified, comprising a carrying-frame provided with su pporting-rollers, a set of serrated or roughened guide-rollers located on carrying-studs, a series of disk cutters mounted in adjustable sliding bearings, means for adjusting the serrated guide-rollers up to the sides of the rail, speed-gearing in connection with one of the guide-rollers, a iange formed on the carrying-frame provided with Xing-bolts which engage a face-plate of a traveling bogie arranged lo run on the rails, anda motor on the said bugie provided with a driving-shaft connected with the speed-gearing of the guideroller, substantially as described.
