SPECIFICATION forming part of Letters Patent No. 718,241, dated anuary 13, 1903. Application filed October 6, 1902. $erial No. 126,132. (No model.)
To all whom it may concern Be it known that I, CARL BAUKNECHT, a subject of the King of Wiirtemberg,Germany, residing at Paris, France, have invented certain new and usefullmprovements in Alarm- Olocks, of which the following is a specification.
The present invention has reference to alarm-clocks, and relates more especially to alarm-clocks with swinging bells or gongs; and the object of the invention is to suspend the bell in such manner that the Weight of the bell parts above and below the axis of suspension is approximately equal, thereby minimizing the power necessary to actuate the alarm.
With this object in View the invention consists of the construction and arrangement of parts to be hereinafter described, and particularly set forth in the appended claims, reference being had to the accompanying sheet of drawings, of which- Figure 1 shows a vertical sectional elevation through the alarm device according to the present invention in the position of rest.
Fig. 2 is a horizontal sectional view on line A B of Fig. 1. Fig. 3 is a vertical sectional elevation turned at an angle of ninety degrees to Fig. 1. Fig. 4 shows a vertical sectional elevation of the device in operation.
The support 3 is secured with its base to the clockwork-housing f. The support at its upper end is forked and journals the pivotal axle d, upon which is secured the screw-bolt support 01, carrying the bell or gong It. The handle 00 serves to clamp the bell to the boltsupport and is so constructed that it counterbalances the weight of the bell parts above and below the pivotal axle 01, giving the lower part just enough overweight to cause the bell to ordinarily hang in a vertical position.
For the purpose of starting and keeping up oscillating movements of the bell the pivotal axle (Z carries a rigid finger "i, with a rectangularly-extending fork r loosely embracing the upper end of the clapper-rod m. The clapper h is secured in the clamping-head b, pivotally secured upon the studton the suport 8.
All of the described mechanism is secured upon the supports, and the only connection with the clockwork and the alarm mechanism is the fork 9, fast upon the clockwork-arbor a, which with its upper rectangularly-bent part loosely embraces the finger '5 and upon being oscillated causes the bell mechanism to oscillate about the pivots d and b, as shown .in Fig. 4.
The bell is and the clapper It always swinging toward each other the actuating-clockwork power need only be comparatively little.
Appropriate means are to be provided for returning the bell into the vertical position when at rest.
What I claim, and desire to secure by Letters Patent, is v 1. In alarm-clocks,the combination of a support secured to the clockwork-housing, apivotal axle journaled in said support, a screwbolt support fast upon the said pivotal axle, a bell, a handle, forming a counterbalance and clamping the said bell to the said screwbolt support, and means for oscillating the said pivotal axle, substantially as and for the purpose set forth.
2. In alarm-clocks,the combination of asupport secured to the clockwork-housing,'a pivotal axle journaled in said support, a screwbolt support fast upon the said pivotal axle, a bell, a'handle, forming a counterbalance and clamping the said bell to the said screwbolt support, a stud secured to the said support, a clamping-head pivotally secured to the said stud, a clapper, secured in the said clamping-head, a finger secured to and depending from the said pivotal axle, a fork rectangularly extending from the said finger and loosely embracing the upper free end of the clapper-rod, and means for actuating the said depending finger, the parts being constructed, arran'ged and working substantially as and for the purpose set forth.
In testimony that I claim the foregoing as my invention I have signed my name in presence of two subscribing witnesses.
CARL BAUKNEOHT.
