SPECIFICATION forming part of Letters Patent No. 571,340, dated November 17, 1896.

Be it known that I, SAMUEL J. OLOUSTON, a subject of the Queen of England, and a resident of Brooklyn, in the county of Kings and State of New York, have invented certain new and useful Improvements in Alarm Attachments for Refrigerators, of which the following is a specification, reference being had to the accompanying drawings, forming a part thereof, in which similar numerals of reference indicate corresponding parts wherever found throughout the several views.

This invention relates to refrigerators, and the object thereof is to provide an attachment for devices of this class which is provided with a drip-pan supported in such manner as to operate an alarm device when filled with the requisite amount of water, whereby notice will be given that the drip-pan should be emptied before the same overflows.

The invention is fully disclosed in the following specification, of which't-he accompanying drawings form a part, in which Figure 1 is a perspective view of a refrigerator provided with my improvement; Fig. 2, a plan view of a part of the attachment containing the support of the drip-pan, a part of said support being broken away so as to better show the construction; Fig. 3, a side view thereof; Fig. 4-, a transverse section thereof on the line 4: 4 of Fig. 2, and Fig. 5 a side view of the alarm device.

I11 the practice of my invention I provide any suitable refrigerator 5, which is provided with legs or supports 6 at each corner there of, and between said legs or supports is placed a frame 7, which is preferably angular in form, and which consists of side and end bars 8, and with two transverse bars 9, and which is provided centrally with two transverse parallel bars 11, which are arranged at a predetermined distance apart and between which at 13 is pivoted a lever 14. The inner end of the lever 14 is pivotally connected with the central bottom portion of a plate 15, which serves as a support for the drip-pan 16, and the outer end of said lever is provided with a weight 17, which is adjustable thereon, and is also connected with an upwardly-directed rod 18,which is hinged to a pivoted dog 19, secured to a plate 20, which is secured to the side of the refrigerator. I also provide any suitable alarm device which consists of a bell or gong 21, between which and the dog 19 is arranged suitable operating mechanism 22, provided with a hammer-lever 23, by which the alarm is sounded,and with a spring-arm 24, which rests on the inner end of the dog 19, by which it is normally supported in such manner that the alarm mechanism will not operate.

It will be understood that the drip-pain 16 is in communication with the drip pipe or aperture (not shown) in. the bottom of the refrigerator, and the weight 17 is so adjusted that when a predetermined amount of water flows into the drippan said drip-pan will. depress the plate 15 and raise the outer end of the lever 14 and also the rod 1.), and this operation will depress the inner end of the dog 1.), upon which the projecting end of the arm 23 rests, and the alarm mechanism will be operated.

This device is simple in construction and operation and perfectly adapted to accomplish the result for which it is intended, and my invention is not limited to the construction of the alarm device, and any suitable alarm may be employed.

It will also be understood that the pan 16 may be removed and emptied whenever desired, and the parts of the alarm-operating mechanism may be readjusted whenever desired.

The plate 15, while vertically movable, fits between the opposite side bars of the frame on which it is supported and is retained in proper position by lugs '01 projections 25, which are provided at the opposite sides thereof, and which fit in or operate in properopenings formed in the said side bars, and it is evident that changes in and modifications of r the construction of this part of the attachment may be made without departing from the spirit of my invention or sacrificing its advantages.

Having fully described my invention, I

claim as new and desire to secure by Letters- ICC outer end of said lever being projected at one side of the refrigerator, and being provided with an adjustable Weight, said end of said lever being also connected with an upwardlydirected rod which is connected with and adapted to operate an alarm device, substantially as shown and described.

The combination With a refrigerator, of the herein-described alarm attachment, consisting of a frame 7, provided with two transverse bars 9, and two parallel transverse bars 11, a superimposed plate 15, to the central portion of which one end of the lever is pivoted, a weight adjustably secured upon the outer end of the lever, an upwardly-directed rod 18 connected with said Weight, a dog 19 SAMUEL J.
