Description

@einen Sgt-titre gatmt @frn i GEORGE V.- 'FARE AND EPHRAM HALL, OF BRANDON, VERMONT.
v Letters .Patent No. 71,726, dated December 3, 1867.
IMPROVBD SADDLERS AND S-HOEMAKERS TOOL. Y
TO ALL WIIOM IT MAY CONCERN: Be it known that ufo, GEORGE V. Flinn and Ernnixm IIALL, of Brandon, in the county of Rutland, andpn the State of Vermont, have invented a new and useful Improvement in lShoeinakers' and Saddlers Ohannelling Tools; and we do hereby declare that the following is afull, Veleaijand exact description thereof, which will enable those skilled in the a'rt to make and use the same, reference being had to the .accompanying drawing, forming part of this specification, in which drawing- Figure 1 is a side view of" the tool, the'prineipnl parts being in section. Figure 2 is an end view. g i Figure 3 is an en'dvicw, the cap or spring -O beingremoved from ts'plaeeA over-the knife. i
This invention relates to tools forcutting channels in the soles of boots and shoes, sewed work', and also for channelling small rounds or curves in harness-werk, such as cheek-pieces, dto., which have usually 'been' accomplished hithertoby means ofa shoe or other knife held in the hand, and gaugod as to the depth of the vchannel or eut by the thumb 'of the workman. 'Our invention is described as follows:
The letter A designates a tool-stock, on whose shank is placed a suitable handle. The working end of the stock A is made vertical, as is indicated at O, to form a shoulder that comesl against the edge of the sols'orv other piece of leather that is to be channelled or cut. From the upper edge of-thepshoulder O'the end off-,the shank is inclined backwards, as is shown in iig.`1, to form a. bearing and a place `for the. attachment of the cl'lannelling-knife B, which lies in a, groove or channel in the'stoek, and is secured, thereto by a set-screw that goes-through an elongated slot eut in the shank of the knife, for the purpose of allowing the knife to be z'l-djusted.V
for the proper depth of the cut` or channel.- Over the knife we place a spring-cap, C, which is so formed that its forward end is bent down ,to clover the shankof the knife, a recess being formed on the under side of the .bent part togive room for the head of the'set-serew that fastens the knife. The rear part 'or shankiof thecap extends along the upper side of the stock, and is fastened thereto by screws D. The shoulder` O and the bottom of the lip of the cap C are at right angles to each other,'and-tl1e knife projects from between them in suc'h a 'manner-'as to bisect the said angle, and consequently the said knife,'when applied to a sole, will eut into 'the edge thereof with precision. Both the shouldered end of the stock A and the bottom of the lip of t-he cap C are roundedor curved transversely to their right-angled faces; that is to say, .they are curved in the direction of the motion-of thevtool when in operation, the object of that .provision and construction being to enable the workman to vary the depth of the e'ut or channel, the knife being set in the middle of theface of the tool, and being ,tongue-shaped, so that its greatest length isat the middle of its width, and eonseqnentl')Y at thecentre of .tlxe'face of the tool. Y
What we claim as new, and desire to secure by'Lettcrs Patent, is--,
yThe channelling-tool above described, composed of the adjustable knife-B, the steek A, and the springen-p C, the lip or bottom of the cap, and the shoulder O of the stock, forming a gauge to bring the knife. atlthe edge of the sole to be ehannelled, substantially as set forth.
2.- "lheroundcd or curved forms of-the cap C :1nd shoulder O, in the direction of their length, substantially asand for the purpose described.
l GEO. V. FARR.,
EPHRA'IM HALL.
