JOHN THOMSON, OF BROOKLYN, NEYV YORK, ASSIGNOR TO JOHN THOMSON PRESS COMPANY, OF JERSEY CITY, A CORPORATION OF NEIV JERSEY.
NEIV JERSEY, AND NEW YORK, N. Y.,
CHASE-SECURING DEVICE FOR PRINTING-MACHINES.
SPECIFICATION forming part of Letters Patent No. 717,141, dated December 30, 1902.
Application filed April 23, 1.902. Serial N0.104=,382. (No modeli- Io all whom/ it ntcty concern; Be it known that 1, JOHN THOMSON, a citizen of the United States, residing at Brooklyn, in the county of Kings and State of New York, have invented certain new and useful Improvements in Chase-Securing Devices for Printing-Machines, of which the following is a specification.
This invention relates to platen printinglo presses, and more particularly to the means for securing and holding the chase in position on the bed of the press; and it has for its object to provide an improved means for ac complishing this result; and it consists in a I 5 device constructed and arranged substantially as hereinafter more particularly set forth.
In the accompanying drawings, Figure 1 is a side view, partly in section, of a portion of the bed of.a platen printing-press, showing the chase-securing device in position; and Fig. 2 is a rear elevation of the same.
While my present invention is more especially adapted for use in connection with what is known on the market under the trade-name of a Oolts Armory Press, it is, of course, applicable to other forms and styles of press, and its detail of construction may be modified by those skilled in the art to adapt it to these constructions without departing from the spirit of the invention.
In the accompanying-"drawings I have shown a portion of a bed B of a printing-press having a face B, on which the chase or form C, containing the type or printing-surface or other devices, is to be secured, and this may be supported on lugs or projections b at the bottom of the bed or otherwise in any wellknown manner. The chase is adapted to be 0 secured in position by a chase-latch 1, which is shown as having a curved forward end to engage the edge of the chase and as having a body portion 2, provided with a threaded opening 3 in its rear portion, and adapted to 5 move in this threaded opening is a threaded bolt 4, which is journaled in a standard 5, attached to the upper surface of the bed 13. The upper end of the bolt 4 is provided with suitable means for rotating it, shown in the form of a bevel-gear 6, and there is also provided means for rotating this in the form of a bevel-gear 7, mounted on a horizontal shaft 8, also journaled in the standard 5 and preferably extending to the side of the press and being provided with suitable means for oper- .ating it, as the hand-wheel 9. Thelower end of the threaded bolt acts as a journal. In the present instance the end 10 is shown reduced in size and as fitting an opening 11, drilled or otherwise formed in the bed B. It will be seen that with this construction by rotating the threaded bolt 4 the latch 1 may be raised or depressed so as to engage or disengage the chase, and it will further be observed that this movement is positive in one direction or the other and in a right line and that by manipulating the threaded bolt the desired pressure of the chase-hook on the chase may be quickly obtained and the chase can be quickly released from the pressure of the latch.
The whole device is exceedingly simple in construction, can be strongly made, is posi tive in its movements, and not likely to get out of order or be subject to wear. Moreover, in consequence of the arrangement and dis posal described the impingement of the outer end of the latch upon the chase acts to cramp or jam the threaded bolt, sothat the jar and vibration of the press when in operation do not act as in previous devices of this character to automatically loosen the grip of the latch upon the chase.
What I claim is- In a platen printing-press, the combination p with the bed and a chase thereon, as O, of a chase-latch and bolt threaded in the rear portion of the latch, a beveled gear attached to the upper end of the bolt and an actuatingshaft with a hand-wheel on its outer end and a beveled gear on its inner end, meshing with the gear on the bolt, whereby the chase-latch is caused to move vertically and cramp the bolt when its outer end impinges upon the chase, substantially as and for the purpose set forth.
In testimony whereof I have signed my name to this specification in the presence of two subscribing witnesses.
JOHN THOMSON.
