Description

No. 716.736. Patented Dec. 23,1902;
.1. F. MOLLOY. I CAST-OFF FUR SUS'PENDERS.
(Application filed Oct. 16, 1902.)
(Na Model.)
NITE STATES I Fries.
Ararat CAST-OFF FOR SUSPENDERS.
SPECIFICATION forming part of Letters Patent No. 716,736, dated December 23, 1902.
Application filed October 16, 1902.
To all whom, it m/ctg concern:
Be it known that 1, JAMES F. MOLLOY, of Vesthaven, in the county of New Haven and State of Connecticut, have invented a new and useful Improvement in Cast-Offs for Suspenders; and I do hereby declare the follow ing, when taken in 'connectionsvith the accompanying drawings and the letters of reference marked thereon, to be a full, clear, and exact description of the same, and which said drawings constitute part of this specification, and represent, in
Figure 1, a face-view of a cast-0E for suspender-ends constructed in accordance with my invention; Fig. 2, a rear view of the same; Fig. 3, a rear view of the hook member with the spring detached; Fig. 4, a plan view of the spring; Fig. 5, a plan view of the loop member; Fig. 6, a side View of the hook and loop members in their normal positions; Fig. 7, a side view of the same parts drawn to illustrate the compression of the spring to open the nose of the hook.
This invention relates to an improvement in cast-offs for suspenders, the object being a simple arrangement of parts whereby the Suspender-end may be readily engaged and disengaged from the suspenders'by simply bending the parts in a way not liable to he accidentally accomplished; and the invention consists in the construction as hereinafter described, and particularly recited in the claim s.
The cast-0E hook is substantially in the form of a snap-hook having a body2 formed at its lower end, with a bowed eye 3, through which the cord or cords of the suspender-end pass. The upper end of the body is bowed to form a nose 4. Secured to the body is a flat spring 5, the outer end of which extends into line with the edge of the nose 4. This spring may be secured in any preferred manner. As herein shown, the body is formed with tongues 6, which are turned over upon the face of the spring through notches 7 in the edges thereof and so as to hold the spring against lateral or vertical movement.
The cast-off loop 8 is adapted to be connected with the ends of thesuspender-strap which may pass through the slot 13 or with the suspender-buckle and includes a slot 9, the lower bar 10 of which is engaged by the nose 4 of the hook which is supported thereby. Below the slot 9 is a slot 11, forming a lower bar 12, which is rearwardly ofiset, as clearly shown in Figs. 6 and 7, and'this bar 12 engages with the outer face of the spring 5 when the hook and loop are connected, as shown in Fig. 6. The parts are readily connected by passing the bar 10 between the spring 5 and the nose 4; of the hook, and when thus engaged the bar 12 rests upon the outer face of the spring 5, as shown in Fig. 6. To disengage the parts, the hook and loop are turned with relation to each other as shown in Fig. 7, causing the bar 12 to bear against the outer face of the spring 5, so as to force it against the body of the hook, as in Fig. 7, thus opening the space between the spring and the hook for the passage of the bar 10, which by the continued turning of the parts readily escapes from the nose 4 of the hook.
It is apparent that in carrying out my invention the spring may be connected to the body in any well-known manner, and therefore I do not Wish to be understood as limiting the invention to the exact construction shown,
but hold myself at liberty to make such changes therein as fairly fall within the spirit and scope of my invention.
Having fully described my invention, what I claim as new, and desire to secure by Letters Patent, is
1. The herein-described cast-off for suspenders comprising a hook member havinga nose at one end and a spring arranged in line therewith, and a loop member having a bar for engagement with said nose, and an offset bar adapted to engage with the outer face of said spring, substantially as described. 2. Acast-off for Suspender-ends comprising a hook member having a nose at one end, a spring secured to said hook member and extending into line with the nose thereof, and a loop member having two bars one above the other, and the lower one ofiset, whereby the upper bar may be engaged with the nose of the hook member and the lower bar bear upon the outer face of the spring of the hook member, substantially as described.
In testimony whereof I have signed this specification in the presence of two subscribing witnesses.
JAS. F. MOLLOY. Witnesses:
