WILLIAM EDGAR BURTON, OF NEW' YORK, N. Y..

:IPECIFICATON forming part of Letters Patent No. 716,665, dated December 23, 1902. Application led July 29, 1902. Serial No. 117,511. (No model.)
To all whom t may concern:
Be it known that I. WILLIAM EDGAR BUR- TON, a citizen of the United States, and a i'esident of the city of New York, borough of Manhattan, in the county and State ofvNew York, have invented a new and Improved Folding Box, of which the following is a full, clear, and exact description;
The object of the invention is to provide a new and improved folding box, made oi' paper or like material, which is simple and durable in construction, very ornamental in appearance, and having its body or cover made from a single piece of paper adapted to be shipped dat, to take up little room, and arranged to allow of quick and convenient conversion into the box body or cover without the aid of skilled labor.
The invention consists of novel features and parts and combinations of the saine, as will be more fully described hereinafter and then pointed out in the claims.
A practical embodiment of the invention is represented in the accompanying drawings, forming a part of this speciiication, in which similar characters of reference indicate corresponding parts in all the views.
Figure l is a face view of the blank for form-V ing the box body or the cover. Fig. 2'is a perspective view of the blank, partly folded to form the box body or the cover. Fig. 3 is a similar view of the same, showing one end closed andthe other'end ready for closing. Frig. 4 is a longitudinal sectional elevation of the improvement, and Fig. 5 is a transverse section of the same.
The box-body and the box-cover are alike in construction, and each is made from a sin. gle piece of paper or like material formed with a middle portion A, li'rorn which extend integrally sides B and B', terminating at their ends in end iiaps C C', and the ends of the middle portion A terminate in integral outer covering-naps D,integrall v connected at their sides by iianges E E with the end iiaps C C', respectively. From the free or outer end of each outer covering-Hap D extends an inner covering-flap F of a width corresponding to the width of the middle portion A, and the free end of each inn er covering-nap F terminates in a locking-tongue G.
The several parts above mentioned are separated from each other by suitable creases or scores H, as plainly indicated in Fig. l.
A blank prepared in theinanner above described can be readily converted into a box body or cover by first turning the sidesB and B' 'up at right angles to the rniddle portion A, then turning the end iaps O O' inward toward each other to stand at right angles to the sides B B, and then the outer coveringiiap D is swung upward to cause the ianges E E to double up on the inside of the said outer covering-flap, so that the flanges lie between the outer covering-flap D and the end flaps O C'. The inner covering-flap F is now turned inward and downward onto the end aps O C', and then theloeking-tongue G of each inner covering-flap F is turned in under the lower edges of the end flaps C O', so as to lie between the flanges E E and the outer covering-nap D.
By having the flanges F. E' turned under the inner face of the outer covering-flap F it is evident that the end iiaps O C' are prevented from opening outwardly, especially as the outer. covering-hap and the flanges E E are prevented from swingingoutwardly, owing to the inner covering-nap F extending on the insideV of the end flaps C O'. The inner covering-flap F is prevented from becoming accidentally detached by the locking-tongue G, as well as by the material with which the box is filled.
- By having the danges E E' turned in under f the outer covering-flap D a very fine appearance is given to the box at the outer ends thereof, as will be readily understood by reference Yto Fig. 3, especially as the turnedunder iianges do not leave sharp edges at the sides of the outer covering-Hap D.
By having the box body or cover made of a single piece of material it is evident that it can be shipped in blank form without taking up much room, and the blank can be readily converted into a box or cover for securely holding the material with which the box is to be iilled. f
It is understood that the box bodies and covers are of slightly-different sizes, so that the cover ts over the box-body when assembling the two parts.
ICO
Having thus described my invention, I claim as new and desire to secure by Letters Patentl. A paper box made from a single-piece blank and having at one end inner iaps integral with the sides of the blank, an outer flap, integral with the middle portion of the blank, and having turned-in ianges integral With and formed partlyfroni the inner flaps and partly from the outer fiap, an inner covering-nap integral with the outer ap and adapted to extend over the inner faces of the inner flaps, and a tongue integral With said covering-flap and adapted to extend on the outer faces of the inner aps, as set forth.
2. A paper box made from a single piece and having at its ends end iiaps integral with the sides of the blank, outer flaps intgral with the middle portion of the blank, inturned flangesintegral With the end and outer cover-aps and formed partly from each of the said flaps, an inner coveringflap integral with the outer cover-Hap, said inner coverflap being of a length equal to the width of the middle portion of the blank and of a Width equal to the Width of the sides, and a tongue integral With the inner cover-flap and adapted to extend on the outer faces of the said end aps, as set forth.
3. A paper-box blank comprising a middle portion, sides integral with the sides of the middle portion, end flaps integral with the ends of the sides, outer covering-flaps integral with the ends of 'the middle portion, ianges integrally connecting the sides of the outer covering-fiaps With the end iiaps and formed partly from each of said flaps, inner covering-flaps at the outer ends of the outer covering-flaps, said inner cover-flap being of a length corresponding to the width of the middle portion and of a Width corresponding to the Width of the sides, and lockingtongues integral with the outer end of the inner covering-flaps, as set forth.
In testimony whereof I have signed my name to this specification in the presence of two subscribing witnesses.
WILLIAM EDGAR BURTON.
