SECIFICATION forming part of Letters Patent No. 716,570, dated December 23, 1902.

Beit known that I, EUGNE MOREAU, a citi- Zen of the Republic of France, residing at the city of New York, in the county and State of New York, have invented certain new and useful Improvements in Acetylene Generators or Lamps, of which the following is a specification.
The principal object of the present invention is to prevent opening of the carbid-chamber except when the generation of gas is not going on and to insure closing of the carbidchamber whenever gas is generated.
To this and other ends hereinafter set forth the invention, stated in general terms, comprises a handpiece for controlling the production of gas, a cover for the carbid-filler, and means for locking said cover in closed position, said means cooperating with the handpiece in such a way that they can unlock the cover only when the handpiece is in position for arresting the production of gas and in such a way that gas can be generated only when the cover is locked; and the invention further comprises the improvements hereinafter described and claimed.
The nature, characteristic features, and scope of myinvention will be more fully understood from the following description,taken in connection with the accompanying drawings, forming part hereof, and in which- Figure lis a view, partly in sectional elevation, illustrating a lamp or generator embodying features of the invention and showing the generation of gas arrested and the locking de-Y vice free to be moved. Fig. 2 is a sectional view illustrating details of construction, as is also Fig. 3. Figs. 4 and 5 are views showing the carbid chamber or filler cover locked and unlocked, and Figs. 6 and 7 are respectively a transverse and a vertical sectional view illustrating a modication of the invention.
In the drawings, referring more particularly to Figs. l to 5, l is a handle arranged to lock and release the feed mechanism. 2 is a cover for the inlet or filler by which carbid is introduced to recharge the lamp. 3 is a movable part provided with a projection 4, which may occupy the position shown in Fig. et and keep the cover closed and which may occupy the position shown in Fig. 5 and percontrol the generation of gas.
mit of the opening of the cover. As shown in Figs. l to 5, the movable part 3 consists of a collar afforded a range of movement around the top of the lamp. Normally this collar whenever gas is being produced occupies such position that the projection locks the cover 2 in closed position, Fig. 4. This is accomplished because in order to permit of the generation of gas the part 1 must be shifted outward, and the shank 5 of this part l is enlarged and can only be moved outward from the casing when a suitable notch or opening, as 6, in the collar is opposite to it. The valves on the spindle 7 control the feed. This spindle is, under normal conditions when gas is generated, automatically controlledthat is, raised and lowered-so as to automatically However, when the generation of gas is to be interrupted the spindle is shifted and heldin such position that in the lamp illustrated in the drawings the lower valve interrupts the feed. There are connections, as 8, operatively arranged in respect to the spindle and to the handle l, so that when the handle is projected inward'toward the center of the lamp it operates through the intervention of the part 8 to hold the spindle 7 in such position that vthe feed is interrupted. This is shown in Fig.1.
When, however, the part l is shifted outward from the lamp, it, as it were, releases the part S and permits the spindle to respond automatically, for example, to the movements of the gasbag 9 or to any other device which is arranged to automatically control its movements in response to changes in the volume of gas required to be generated. When the notch or opening 6 in the collar is opposite the shank 5, the part 4 locks the cover 2, and under these conditions the part 5 can pass through the notch or opening 6, and thus the part 1 can be shifted into the position shown, so as to permit of the generation of gas in the well-understood manner. Clearly the part 5 when it projects through the notch or opening 6 serves to prevent rotation of the collar 3, and this prevents the opening of the cover 2. In order to open the cover 2, it is necessary to first move the part 5 inward clear of the notch o', and in doing this the generation of gas is suspended,because the valve-spindle is locked shown in Fig. 7 the part a clears in position for accomplishing that result, so that the cover 2 can only be opened when the part 4 is clear of it, and the part 4 can only be made clear of it when the generation of gas isinterrupted. Furthermore, the generation of gas cannot be again started until after the cover is closed, because the part l cannot be shifted until the part 5 is opposite the notch or opening 6. The part 3 may be slotted-for example, as at lO-and such slotted portion by cooperating with a screw or stop, as shown, can be made to llimit the range of travel of the collar.
Referring to Figs. 6 and 7, the spindle a7 carries the valves and, as shown, is arranged to be put and held in position for stopping the feed by means of a inger-nut a'. When the iinger-nut a is screwed upward, so as to cause the valve on the lower end of the spindle a7 to positively interrupt the feed, and consequently the generation of gas, the handle d3 can be turned so that a projection a4 on it clears the cover a2 of the filler. I-Iowever, in such position the part a of the locking-lever takes under the bottom of the nut a', and consequently prevents it from being screwed down, or, in other words, locks it in such position that the feed and consequent generation of gas are stopped. However, when the handle is turned into the position the bottom of the nut ct and permits it to be screwed down, with the result that gas is generated.
It will be obvious to those skilled in the art to which the invention relates that modiiications may be made in details without departing from the spirit thereof. Hence I do not limit myself to the precise construction and arrangement of parts hereinabove set forth, and illustrated in the accompanying drawings; but, y
Having thus described the nature and objects of the invention, what I claim as new, and desire to secure by Letters Patent, is
l. In an acetylene generator or lamp, the combination of a carbid-chamber having a feed-opening and a closure therefor, means within-the lamp responsive to changes in the volume of gas required to `be generated for regulating Irhe feed of carbid, a handpiece for controlling said means, and independent means operatively arranged in respect to the handpiece and closure whereby the latter is locked when the handpiece isfin position for permitting of the generation of gas and is released when the handpiece is in position for arresting the production of gas, substantially as described.
2. In an acetylene generator or lamp the combination of a closure for the carbid-chamber, a movable collar provided with a projection adapted to the closure and with a notch, and a handle for controlling the production of gas, said handle having a shank arranged to register with said notch and lock the collar, substantially as described. y
3. An acetylene generator or lamp provided with a carbid-chamber having a feedopening and a closure therefor, and handpiece for controlling the production of gas, in combination with means having a partial rotary movement and arranged to lock the closure when the handpiece ishin position for permitting of the generation of gas and to release the closure when the handpiece is in position for arresting the production of gas, substanti'llly as described.
