Be it known that I, Josnrn N. LAPOINTE, a citizen' of the United States of America, and
Y a resident of Hydepark, in the county of Norfolk and State of Massachusetts, have invented certain new and useful Improvements in Reamers, of which the following is a specification.
My invention relates to such metal-Working tools as reamers, and more particularly to those of the adjustable type. y
It has for its principal objects the prevention of the clogging of the accumulated chips, which in the ordinary reamer crowd in the spaces between the cutting-blades and the parallel faces of the work and the body in which the blades are set, these chips gathering most freely at the forward end and tending to there remain and resist clearing, and also the provision of an effective adjustment for the blades.
In the accompanying drawings, Figure 1 shows a side elevation of one form of my improved reamer. Fig. 2 is a central longitudinal section thereof. Fig. 3 is an end elevation looking from the left in Fig. l, and Fig. 4 is a transverse section on the line 4 4 of Fig. l.

The numeral 10 designates the body of the reamer, here shown as having a shank 11 integral therewith, but which might be equally well mounted upon a separate arbor, as is common in this class of tools. The exterior of the body is preferably tapered rearwardly in decreasing diameter from the entering end and is provided with longitudinally-extending dovetail or undercut slots or grooves 12, the inner walls of which may be inclined at the same angle as the taper of the body, terminating at the inner side at points 12 somewhat outside the surface of the shank, this substantial parallelism of the surfaces furnishing a convenient taper and facilitating the tting of the blades in their grooves by the workman.y In the slots fit blades 13, having lateral projections lfl seated and bearing in the undercut slots, in the present instance havingsuch longitudinal taper that their cut- Serial No. 103,862. ting edges 15 will lie in a cylindrical surface, and therefore diverge rearwardly from the body. Each blade is also provided with a longitudinal projection or rib 16, adapted to enter a preferably square slot 17 in the body 10, opening inwardly from the slot 12 and having its inner wall conveniently lying in sub stantially the' same line as the surface of the shank. The projection 16 lies radially with regard to the body and is preferably of such dimensions that it has no bearing on the walls of the slot 17. Its extension along the blade strengthens said blade and facilitates manufacture by permitting it to be shaped up from a single piece of metal. In the other end of the body is a recesslS, which is threaded to receive a screw 19, provided in its head with Spanner-openings 20 or the like and near the head with a circumferential flange 2l, the head and iiange being received in an annular recess 22 in the end of the body when the parts are assembled. In each rib 16 near the outer end of the blade is a transverse groove 23, adapted to be engaged by the flange 21 when the screw is inserted in the recess 18. Then as the screw engages the thread in the body and is turned to ent-er the blades move down the inclines of the slots 12 until their cutting edges occupy the desired position. The screw may be rotated in either direction to increase or decrease the effective diameter of the blades, their fit in the slots giving sufficient resistance to retain them against displacement by the accidental turning of the screw in the use of the reamer.
It will be seen. that each blade has its bearing upon surfaces which by the shape of the dovetail are protected from the entrance of fine chips and dirt gathering within the recess at the outer end of the body and by their being somewhat raised by the shank at the opposite end, while the rib 16 has no bearing in the slot 17, into which from its situation abrasive particles are most liable to enter. Thus practically no wear is introduced in the adjustment of the blades, and a perfect fit is IOO Without becoming jammed in between the Work and the body, and thus clogging the action of the reamer.
Having thus described my invention, I claim l. In a reamer, the combination With a body tapered rearwardly from the en tering end, of blades provided With cutting edges, said cutting edges extending along the tapered snrface of the body and diverging rearwardly therefrom.
2. In a reamer, the combination with a body tapered `rearwardly from the entering end, of blades provided with cutting edges, said cutting edges lying in a cylindrical surface and extending along the tapered surface of the body.
3. In a reamer, the combination with a body tapered rearwardly from the entering end and provided with longitudinal slots having their inner Walls inclined at substantially the same angle as the surface of the body, of tapered blades movably seated in the slots with their cutting edges lying in a cylindrical surface and extending along the tapered surface of the body.
4. In a reamer, the combination with an externally-tapered body provided with lon gitudinal slots, each having an inclined inner bearing-Wall and a slot opening inwardly from said bearing-Wall, of blades movably seated in the slots and provided With a grooved projection adapted to enter the inner slot, and a screw threaded into the body and provided with a ange entering the groove in t'he blade projection.
5. In a reamer, the combination with a body provided With an inclined longitudinalslot and a second slot opening inwardly from the inclined slot, of a blade seated inthe inclined slot and provided with a grooved projection extending into the inner slot, and a screw threaded into the end of the body and provided With a flange entering the groove in the blade.
