Specification of Letters Patent.
Patented Apr. 18, 1916.

To all whom 2'25 may concern:
Be it known that I, Gnonen E. MILLER, a citizen of the UnitedStates, residing at Etna, in the county of Allegheny and State of Pennsylvania, have invented new and useful Improvements in Tools for Threading, Reaming', and Facing Pipe-Couplings and the like, of which the following is a specification.
My invention relates to a combination tool for threading, reaming and facing pipecouplings or the like.
It is the object of my invention to provide improved means for operating the spindle or stem which controls the position of the threading dies.

On the drawings, 1 designates a lathe head or other rotary head to which the tool or attachment constituting my invention is secured by the bolts 2, the head and tool being in axial alinement. The tool has the disk-like foot or base 8 which rests against the head 1. The foot 3 is provided with the stem 4 having at its outer end the head 5 which has a larger diameter than the stem. The outer portion of the head 5 has a number of open-ended slots 6 extending from the exterior of the head to the axial opening 7, these slots being constructed to receive the threading dies 8 which are adapted to be moved laterally in the slots 6.
The rear end of the stem 10 has a transverse opening 15 in which the cylindrical cross-pin l6 fits loosely. The pin 16 extends entirely through the stem 4 which has the diametrically opposite slots 17 to receive the pin 16 and permit its travel l0ngituolinally of the stem 4:. The ends of the pin 16 are provided with antifriction rollers 18 which lie in inclined or cam grooves 19 in the inner wall of the operating ring 20. The ring 20 is composed of two lateral sections 21 and 22 secured together by screws 23. The meeting ends of the sections are provided with interlocking tongues 24: and grooves 25.
The collar 20 has a pair of annular grooves in its inner wall to receive the pair of annular ribs 26, which permit the collar to turn but prevent its travel longitudinally of the stem l. Handles 27 are provided for turning the collar 20.
The rear end of the head 5 has integral therewith the lugs 28, one for each die 8.
These lugs have rectangular openings 29 substantially parallel with the openings 6 but displaced slightly to one side and at the rear thereof. Each opening contains two tools, a reamer 30 and a facing cutter 31. Each reamer is a rectangular piece of steel having its forward end so shaped and dis posed that it will ream an annular portion in the interior of the end of a coupling when the head 5 has passed into the coupling the required distance. The cutting end of each reamer extends outwardly beyond the outer end of the facing cutter 31 which faces or sinoothes the end of the coupling at the conclusion of the reaming operation. Each reamer stands in the inner corner of the opening 29 in which it is positioned. Each facing cutter has a longitudinal groove 32 at one corner to receive the two sides of the reamer not in contact with the head 5 and the lug 28. The lugs 28 are provided with two screws 33 and 34:, the screws 33 bearing against the outer sides of the cutters 31 and clamp the reamers between the head 5 and the cutters 31, and also clamp the cutters 31 securely in the lugs 28. The screws 3& pass through one of the sides of the lugs 28 and engage the lateral walls of cutters 31 opposite the grooves 32 and clamp the reamers 30 between the lugs 28 and the cutters 31, and also assist in clamping the cutters 31 in the lugs 28. The outer sides of the cutters 31 are extended forwardly to form a filleted cutter 35, which rounds the outer corner of a coupling at the conclusion of the threading, reaming, and facingoperations. The cutter has the angle which connects it to the cutter 31 filleted as shown at 36, Fig. 6. The cutter may be omitted, if desired, as shown by the facing cutter 31 Fig. 7.
The facing cutter 31 may be used in place of the cutter 31, the cutter 31 having the groove 32 for receiving the reamer 30. The upper end of the cutter 31 operates to trim the end of a coupling or pipe at the conclusion of the threading and reaming operations. The upper end of the cutter 31 operates the same as the upper end of the cutter 31 with the part 35 omitted.
37 is a cap secured to the outer end of the head 5v and against the outer ends of the dies 8. The cap has the central screw 39 extending into engagement with the end of the head 9 when in its outermost position. By adjusting the screw 39 in the cap the travel of the head 9 can be adjusted, whereby the outward movement of the dies 8 can be adjusted, as shown in my Patent, No. 1,098,583,
granted June 2nd, 1914.
The consecutive thread-cutting teeth on each die are separated by a space equal to the size of one tooth, whereby a large amount of clearance is provided for the material cut out by the dies. This is an important feature, particularly for threading soft material as lead, copper, wrought iron, and the like.
I claim:
1. In a tool of the class described, a rotary head, threading dies movable laterally therein, a reamer and a facing cutter for each die, each facing cutter having a longitudinal groove to receive a reamer, and means bearing on the facing cutter for clamping the reamer and facing cutter to the head.
2. In a tool of the class described, a rotary head, threading dies movable laterally therein, a reamer, a facing cutter, a groove in the latter of less depth than the thickness of the reamer to receive the reamer, the latter bearing on the said head, and means for causing the facing cutter and reamer to be clamped together and the latter to be clamped to the head.
3. Ina tool of the class described, a r0- tary head, threading dies carried by the head and arranged to thread the interior of a coupling, a facing cutter carried by the head and arranged to shape the ends of the coupling, and a cutter carried by the facing cutter and having a portion extending be-' yond the cutting portion of the facing cutter for rounding the outer corner at the ends of the coupling.
