Be itknown that I, EDWARD HILKER, acitizen of the United States, residing at Chicago, in the county of Cook and State of Illinois, have invented certain new and useful Improvements in a Combined Mop and W'ringer Therefor, of which the following is a specification.

The said invention consists in various improvements in the construction and arrangement of parts of mops and wringers therefor, and particularly of the class of said devices such as is shown in PatentNo. 699,953, issued to me on the 13th day of May, 1902, as will be hereinafter fully described and claimed.

The principal object of the invention is to provide a combined mop and \vringer of simple and inexpensive construction in which the mop-holder shall be so constructed that when the device is used for mopping or scrubbing the floor or other surface the body of the holder will be retained at a slight distance above the mop, so that the water will not be squeezed or pressed therefrom.

Another object is to so construct the device that the mop or cloth may be wrung with either hand of the operator without soiling the hands, in which operation the mop-holder will be held in such a position as to cause the mop or cloth to become taut when it is twisted.

Other objects and advantages of the invention will be set forth in the snbjoined description and explanation.

In order to enable others skilled in the art to which myinvention pertains to make and use the same, I will now proceed to describe it, referring to the accompanying drawings, in which- Figure 1 is a side view of a combined mop and wringer therefor embodying one form of the invention and illustrating by continuous lines the parts in position ready for the device to be used for scrubbing or wiping the floor and showing by dotted lines the position of the parts when they are ready to be employed for wringing the mop. Fig. 2 is a plan View of the mop-holder and the socket for the handle secured thereto. Fig. 3 is a rear end View thereof. Fig. 4 is a side View of a modification of the mop-holder and a portion of the handle with the mop-cloth and wringing device removed. Fig. 5 isa perspective view of a modification in the construction of the mop-holder. Fig. (3 is a similar view of another modified fOlIll thereof, and Fig. 7 is a detail view of one of the shafts of the wringer.

Similar letters refer to like parts throughout the different views of the drawings.

The mop-holder comprises a body or head A, which may be made of any suitable size, form, and material, but usually of wood, and has in one of its ends an open-ended slot a, which provides prongs a, between which is pivoted or secured on a suitable pintle or rod Z) a socket-piece B, in which the handle B is fastened. The sides or edges of the body or head A are provided with longitudinal grooves c, in which the bail O rests. This bail, with the body or head A, comprises the mop-holder, and said bail is preferably made of one piece of wire and bent so as to surround the body A and to fit in the grooves 0 thereof, but to extend some distance from each end of the body. Each end of the bail is bent downwardly, so as to reach some distance below the bottom surface of the body and to form horizontal rests c and 0 to the latter of which the mop-cloth D is secured, usually by beinglooped thereover. The horizontal rest or downturned portion 0 of the bail at the rear end of the body will rest on the mop-cloth when the same is lying on the floor, as is shown in Fig. 1 of the drawings, and in conjunction with the downturned portion or rest 0 will prevent the block or body A resting on the cloth or mop, and thereby permitting the latter to retain the water which it may take up when used for Wiping the fioor or with which it is saturated when the floor is being scrubbed.

Located on the handle B is asleeve or 001- lar E, which is preferably fixed thereon near the rear end of the body or head A by means of a screw 6 or otherwise. Journaled in suitable bearings on the collar E is a crank F, which has on one of its ends a handle f to be used for turning the same. On the other end of the crank F is mounted a beveled gear G, which meshes with a similar gear G, which is mounted on one end of a shaft H, which has at its other end a hook it to'detachably engage the mop-cloth D, as shown in Fig. 1 of the drawings. The shaft H is journaled in suitable hearings on the collar E at right angles to the crank-shaft, as is shown.

Instead of forming the body A with the slot a and pivotally securing the handle therein I may omit said slot and pivotally secure the handle on the upper surface of the body, as is shown in Fig. 4 of the drawings, in which construction I employ a casting or piece it, which may be fastened to the body A by means of screws or otherwise and which casting or piece is provided with two lugs h having openings therein to receive the pintle b, which passes through the lower portion of the socket-piece B on the lower end of the handle.

In Fig. 5 I have shown a modified form in the construction of the mop-holder, which consists in using the body without the slot in its end and without the grooves c in its sides. In this construction the bail may be composed of two pieces C, having the downturned horizontal rests c and 0 at the ends of the body or block, as before. The pieces 0, forming the bail of this construction, may be secured to the sides of the body by means of staples 1 or otherwise.

In Fig. 6 is illustrated still another modification in the construction of the mop-holder, which consists in omitting the grooves and slot therefrom and in employing a bail C composed of one piece, as shown in Figs. 1 to 4:, inclusive, of the drawings, which bail may be secured to the sides of the body by means of staples i or otherwise. The downwardlyprojecting rest 0, extending as it does some distance below the lower surface of the body, will permit the handle to fit in the slot at in about alinement with the prongs a thereof, which position will be assumed by the body when the mop is twisted by means of the crank-shaft F and the shaft H, which is united to one end of the mop.

Having thus fully described my invention, What I claim as new, and desire to secure by Letters Patent, is-

1. The combination with a bifurcated block or body provided at each of its ends with means to hold it at a distance from the floor when in use thereon, of a handle connected to the body between its prongs, a mop connected at one of its ends to the said means and at its other end to the handle, substantially as described.

2. The combination with a bifurcated block means located on the handle and connected to the other end of the mop to twist the same, substantially as described.

3. The combination with a block or body, of a bail secured thereto and projecting downwardly from the body, a handle connectedto the body, a mop connected at one of its ends to the bail and at its other end to the handle, substantially as described.

4. The combination with a block or body, of a bail made of a continuous piece of wire bent to surround the body and secured thereon, said bail having at each end of the body a downwardly-projecting horizontal rest, a handle connected to the body, a mop connected at one of its ends to the bail and at its other end to the handle, substantially as described.

5. The combination with a bifurcated block or body having a longitudinal groove on each of its sides, a bail located in said grooves and having downwardly-projecting horizontal rests at each end of the body, a handle connected to the body between its prongs, a mop connected at one of its ends to the bail and at its other end to the handle, substantially as described.

6. The combination with a bifurcated body having a longitudinal groove on each of its sides, of a bail located in said grooves and having a downwardly-projecting horizontal rest at each end of the body, a handle pivotally connected to the body between its prongs, a mop connected at one end of its ends to the bail, and means located on the handle and connected to the other end of the mop to twist the same, substantially as described.

7. A mop-holder comprising a bifurcated body having on each of its sides a longitudinal groove, and a bail located in said grooves and having a downwardly-projecting horizontal rest at each end of the body, substantially as described.
