MATTRESS-MAKING MACHINE.

To all whom it may concern:
Be it known that I, DANIEL WAGNER, a citizen of the United States, residing at Little Rock, in the county of Pulaski and State of Arkansas, have invented certain new and useful Improvements in Mattress-Making Machines, of which the following is a specification.
The invention to be hereinafter described [0 relates to mattress-making machines of that type wherein the material to be placed within the tick of the mattress is given compression in a suitable compression-box and thereafter forced from said box into the tick; and the object of my invention is to provide a simple and improved machine of this character in which the movable lid whereby the material in the com pression-box is compressed may be given its necessary operative movement by means of compressed air, steam, or other expansive fluid acting through the usual me dium of a cylinder or piston or equivalentdevices, and also to provide in such machine a similarly-operated plunger whereby the on tire machine both in compression of the material in the compression-box and in the movement of the material therefrom into the tick shall be easily controlled by the simple manipulation of ordinary valves and whereby 0 also accuracy of compression and simplicity of parts are secured.

Suitably mounted upon a supporting-base A are the usual uprights A, one preferably located at each corner of the rectangular base A, said corner-posts being preferably 0 provided on their opposed faces'on opposite sides of the machine with grooves or guides for the reception of posts 0 secured to the corners of the compression-lid 0, one of said posts being attached to each corner of the lid, as will be obvious from the construction shown.
The compression lid or cover 0 comprises the cross-pieces A as shown in Fig. 1, and similar end pieces A upon which end pieces the upright posts 0 are secured, by which the lid is guided in its upward and downward movements. The center portion of the lid, comprising a suitable number of pieces 0', (shown as four in Fig. 1,) is suitably secured to the cross-pieces of the lid-framing and rep- 5 5 resents the narrowest form of mattress that can be made by the machine. The pieces 0 of the lid on either side of the center pieces 0 are detachably connected by suitable detachable connections or bolts 0 to the lidframing, whereby the lid may be adjusted to any desired size of mattress to be made. Preferably secured to the central portion of the lidis a plate C to which a plunger or piston rod C working in a cylinder 0, is secured by means of bolts 0 The cylinder 0 is preferably supported in the center of the machineframing, as shown more clearly in Fig. 1, as by suitable bolt connections with the said framing, and receives compressed air, steam, 0 or other fluid for operating the piston and the rod (3 thereof through the pipe connections 0 0, whereby either an up or a down forcible and positive motion may be imparted to the lid or cover 0. 7
It will be evident that since the cylinder O and its operative piston connection with the cover 0 are located centrally of the machine the lid would be liable to have unequal motions at its different corners, and thereby 8o become jammed or give unsatisfactory equalization of compression upon the material in the compression-box unless some means were provided to render the movement of the lid or cover G uniform throughout its extent, and 8 5 this I have accomplished by the following mechanism: Mounted in suitable brackets d on each side of the machine-framing or uprights A are the shafts D, which extend the full length of the machine between the up- 0 rights A and have secured thereto and passing through suitable perforations 01 of the uprights A pinions d, which intermesh with suitable racks a, secured to the upright posts 0 carried by the movable lid. Likewise secured to the ends of the machine-framing or uprights A are brackets d, in which are j ournaled at either end of the machine suitable cross-shafts D D, the said shafts D D being operatively connected with the side shafts D D by means of suitable bevel or miter gears (1 01 From this construction it will be apnot form parent that any movement of the lid will be transmitted through the rack c on the 11pright posts 0 carried by the lid to thepinions d on the side shafts D, and since these side shafts are operatively joined, as hereinbefore described, it will be apparent that the lid or cover under the action of the compression means operating within the cylinder 0 must move uniformly and equally toward and from the bed of the machine at all times. It will be obvious, of course, that the particular mechanism for securing this difficult motion of the lid or cover during its up-and-down movement may be varied without departing from the spirit of my invention; but I have found the above construction to work well in practice, and while my invention is not limited thereto yet I regard it as one of the preferred forms for the embodiment of my said invention in respect to the means of giving a uniform up'and-down movement to the lid or cover 0.
Mounted upon the base portion A of the machine are the side pieces B of the compression-box B, Fig. 2, and preferably secured to the ends of these side pieces B at the discharge end of the machine are the telescoping discharge and mattress-tick supporting pieces 5 12 The side pieces B of the compression-box are adjustable toward and from each other to provide for the making of mattresses of difierent sizes, and such adjustment is secured by means of angular plates 5, secured to the side pieces and telescoping dis charge extensions and carrying rack-teeth Z), which engage with pinions 6 mounted on the shafts b and operated by means of hand- Wheels b whereby the side pieces may be adusted toward and from each other, as desired; but as this feature of the machine does part of my present invention I deem it unnecessary to further describe the same, except to say that at each end of the shafts b are the pinions b 19 so that both ends of the side pieces may be simultaneously operated.
Mounted on a continuation of the base portion A of the machine is a discharge-cylinder-supporting platform E carrying a cylinder E, having suitable inlet and discharge connections 6 6 whereby the contained piston carrying the piston-rod e, to which is socured the plunger E, maybe given its necessary movement lengthwise of the mattressstuffing box to expel the material through the discharge end B Fig. 1, when the same has been subjected to the desired compression. The plunger E is adjustable, as shown in Fig. 4, to accommodate its size to the width of the space between the side pieces B B of the compression-box, so that the material in being forced out of said box will be acted on the entire width thereof.
It will be evident, of course, that the nu n1- ber of cylinders and pistons for operating either the compression-lid or the plunger for from the compression desired, and instead of one a plurality might be used; but of course this is evident to the ordinary person skilled in this art without detailed showing or further description.
The operation of my device is as follows: The mattress-compression box B has its side pieces adjusted to the desired width of mattress,and the cover or lid 0 is likewise adj usted to the same proportion, and material is then placed loosely within the compression-box B. The plunger 0 is then operated by the admission offinidintothe compression-cylinder C to move the lid or cover 0 toward and upon the material in the compression-box, the shafts D D and their gearing and rack connections with the lid causing said lid during such movement to travel uniformly throughout and so that all parts of the lid will travel equally. When the desired compression has been secured, the plungerscylinder E hasadmitted thereto suitable fluid for operating the plunger E, whereby the compressed material in the box B is expelled therefrom through the discharge end B of the machine.
Having thus described my invention, what I claim, and desire to secure by Letters Patent, is-
1. In a mattress-making machine, the combination of a supporting-frame, a compression-box supported thereby, a vertically-movable lid or cover adapted to be bodily moved toward and away from the compression-box, a cylinderand piston mounted upon the machine-frame and operatively connected to the lid or cover, and means for causing said lid or cover to move positively and uniformly at all its parts toward and from the com pression-box.
2. In a mattress-making machine, the combination of'a supporting-frame, a compression-box supported thereby, a vertically-mov able lid or cover adapted to be moved bodily toward and from the compression-box, a cyl= inder and piston centrally disposed upon the supporting-frame, the said piston being connected to the central portion of the lid, and positively-operating means for causing the said lid to move uniformly at all its parts into and away from the compression-box.
3. In a mattress-making machine, the combination of a supporting-frame, a compression-box supported thereby, a vertically-movable lid or cover adapted to be bodily moved into and away from the compression-box, a cylinder mounted upon said frame, a piston cooperating with said cylinder and directly connected with the movable top or cover, and means for causing said cover under the acdischarging" material box may be varied as tion of a fluid in the cylinder to. move positively and uniformly into and away from the compression-box,said means comprising gear ing connection between the cover or lid.
4. In a mattress-making machine, the combination of a supporting-frame, a compres the different parts of sion-box supported thereby, and a lid or cover bodily movable into and away from the compression-box, a cylinder and piston operatively connected to the said cover for giving the same operative movement under the action of a suitable fluid in the cylinder, racks projecting from the corners of saidlid or cover and gearing connection between said racks whereby the lid is caused to move uniformly toward, into and away from the compression'box.
5. In a mattress naking machine, the combination of a supporting-frame, a compression-box carried thereby, a cover or lid bod ily movable into and away from said compression-box, a cylinder and piston carried by the said frame, one of said parts being directly connected to the said cover or lid to give movement thereto under the action of a suitable fluid in the cylinder, upright posts connected to the corners of said lid or cover, side and end shafts carried by the supportingframe, gearing connecting said shafts and pinions operatively connecting the racks with said shafts whereby the lid is caused to move uniformly toward, into and away from the compression-box.
6. In a mattress-making machine, the combination of a supporting-frame, a compression-box carried thereby, a lid or cover, a cylinder and piston carried by said frame and operatively connected with said cover to move the same under the action of a suitable fluid in the said cylinder, upright posts carried by the corners of said cover and provided with racks, guides in said frame for said upright posts, side and end shafts carried by said frame and gear together, and gearing connection between said racks and said shafts whereby the cover or lid is caused to have uniform movement toward, into and away from the compression-box.
7. In a mattress-making machine, the combination of a supporting-frame, a compression-box carried thereby, a lid or cover movable toward, into and away from said compression-box, a plunger for forcing the material out of said com pression-box, a cylinder and piston centrally mounted upon the frame, one of said parts being directly connected to the central part of the cover, means for causing the cover to move uniformly in all its parts when actuated by the centrally-disposed cylinder and piston, a second cylinder and piston, one of said parts being centrally connected to the plunger for forcing the material out of the compression-box after it has been compressed by the first-mentioned cylinder and piston.
8. In a mattressmaking machine, the combination of a supporting-frame, a compression-box adjustable in size, a lid or cover adjustable to the size of the compression-box, a plunger likewise adjustable in size to the compression-box, a cylinder and piston centrally mounted upon the frame, one of said parts being directly connected to the central part of the cover, means for causing the cover to move uniformly in all its parts when actuated by the centrally-disposed cylinder and piston, a second cylinder and piston, one of said parts being centrally connected to the plunger for forcing the material out of the compression-box after it has been compressed by the first-mentioned cylinder and piston.
