IMPROVEMENT IN BALlNG-PRESSES.
Specification forming part of Letters Patent No. 125,890, dated April 23,1872.
Specification describing certain Improvements in Cotton-Presses, invented by VIL- LrAM GOLDING, of New Orleans, in the parish of Orleans and State of Louisiana.
This invention relates to that class of cotton-presses which, being employed for repressing bales of cotton, as they are received from the planters, to reduce them to the smallest desirable compass before shipment to foreign or home ports, are operated by means of steam or water power. I employ a press of this kind, in which both the upper and lower platen are movable; and my improvement consists, first, in suspending the lower platen from the piston of a cylinder above by means of four piston-rods working through suitable stuiiingboxes in the lower head of the cylinder, and
secured respectively to the corners of the lower platen 5 the object being to secure a more uniform action ofthe piston upon the platen, and to dispense with the necessity of using guides along which the platen may slide; secondly, in such a combination, with the lower platen and the cylinder, from the piston of which it is suspended by the four piston-rods, of theupper platen that the said piston-rods shall form the guides for the latter and the lower head of the cylinder constitute the support for the screw-spindles, which, being geared toumns, resting upon a suitable base, the columns being of such a height as will accommodate the platens and operating mechanisms beneath the cylinder in the manner illustrated. The cylinder, which may be open at the upper end, contains a piston, B, which is provided with four piston-rods, C, passing downward from it, through suitable stufng-boxes in the lower head of the cylinder to the lower platen D. The piston-rods, being arranged rectangularly" on the piston, are respectively fastened to the corners of the lower platen in any preferred manner. To reduce the height of the press an opening may be formed in the base, with a corresponding pit beneath, to be entered by the y lower platen in descending to its lowest position. Themotive agent, whether it be steam or water, enters the cylinder beneath the piston through the valve-chest E, and is also exhausted through the same in the ordinary manner. The upper platen F is fitted upon the piston-rods (l, which aid in guiding it in its vertical motions, imparted to it by four screw-spindles, G, by which it is suspended from the cylinder A. These screw-spindles, arranged vertically, are journaled in suitable bearings formed in or upon the lower head of the cylinder, enter, with their lower screwthreaded ends, the nuts H upon the top of the platen F, and each carries a spur-wheel, G', all of which mesh into the wheel I, to be simultaneously put in motion thereby. The-means shown for rotating the wheel I consist of the worim-gearing K L 5 but other means may be employed, if desired.
The mechanism for operating the upper platen is to be connected to a steam-engine or other power motor; and, in compressing a bale of cotton, the first pressure upon it is exerted by the upper platen descending until the resistance of the bale equals the power of the engine.
