APPAREL-CAP.
SPECIFICATION forming part of Letters Patent No. 716,258, dated December 16, 1902. Application led March 10,1900. Renewed September 27,1902. Serial 110.125,128. (No model.)
To a/ZZ whom it may corr/cern,.-
Be it known that LFREDERIQK MAAss, o Brookline, county of Norfolk,Stateof1Massa chusetts, have inventedl'an Improvement in Eye-Shading Vizors forHead-Coverings, of
which the following description, in connection with the accompanying drawings, is a speciication, like characters on the drawings representing like parts. A
This invention has for its object .the production of a novel vizor for a cap or other head-covering, said vizor being made extensible to act when'desired for an eye-shade.
My improved vizor is made of a main and an auxiliary vizor, `the auxiliary vizor being movable out and in under the main vizor.
The auxiliary vizor is shown as composed of celluloid orequivalent thin andstiff material, and preferably the auxiliary vizor will be made of two thicknessesof material, one thickness being slotted to slideon suitable guides located at thelunder side of the main auxiliary vizor drawn out; and Figs. 4 and 5l on a larger scale show a cross-section of the two vizors, one igure showing the auxiliary vizor extended and the other closed.
The bodyA of the cap may be of any usual or suitable material or shape. The main y vizorB may be secured to thelbody in any usual manner. The main vizor is shown as having extended from itsinner or under side three guides 2 3 4, which "may consist of disks or heads connected with shanks extended through holes made in the main vizor, said Shanks being suitably secured in the main vizor in any desired manner, as by nuts d, screwed onto threaded ends of the shanks above the upper side of the main vizor. A suitable space is left between the inner sides of the heads or 'disksconstituting one form of guides'to receive the auxiliary vizor b or eye shade, which may be composed of celluloid or other sti yet light-weight material having a series of slots b2 straddling and sliding on said guides.
To conceal the heads or disks and put them Vout of the reach of the wearer of the cap, I preferably make the auxiliary vizor of two layers of material, one superimposed on the other, the exposed convexed edges of said layers being bound at b' in any usual manner.
The under layer of the auxiliary vizor need not be slitted, and the heads or disks are placed between the said two layers, as shown best in Figs. 3 and 4.
This invention is not to be limited to the exact shape of the slots in the auxiliary vizor or to the exact shape shown for the guides controlling the movement of said vizor, as I 4believe that I am the first to provide at the under side of the main vizor a slotted auxiliary vizor, said slots embracing any suitable guide located at the under side of the main vizor.
Having fully described my invention, what I claim, and desire to secure by Letters Patent, is-
l. In a head-covering, a main vizor having aplurality of guides connected therewith, and an auxiliary vizor slotted to embrace said guides and means connected with the guides for holding the auxiliary vizor in place.
2. In a head-covering, a main vizor having extended below its under sideguides,I and an auxiliary vizor, provided with parallel slots embracing said guides, said auxiliary vizor being applied to the under side of said main vizor, and extensible therefrom to act as an eye-shade.
3. In a head-covering, a main vizor having extended below its under side guides, and an auxiliary vizor composed of two layers of material, one layer being slotted to embrace and slide on said guides, said auxiliary vizor being applied to the under side of said main vizor and extensible therefrom to act as an eye-shade.
4. In a head-covering, a main viaor provided on its under side with a plurality of headed projections forming guides, an auxiliary vizor composed of two layers of material, one layer having slots to embrace and slide on the guides, the heads of said guides being wider than the slots and playing between the two layers of material, -Whereloy the auxiliary vizor is held n its operative position.
5. In a head-covering, a main vizor provided on its under side with a plurality of headed projections forming guides, an auxiliary vizor provided With parallel slots embracing said guides, said auxiliary vizor being applied t0 the under side of said main vizor and extensible therefrom, the heads of the guides serving to secure the two vizors 1o together.
In testimony whereof I have signed my name to this specification in the presence of two subscribing witnesses.
FREDERICK MAASS.
