BOTTLE-STOPPER.
SPECIFICATION formingpart of Letters Patent No. 716,257, dated December 16, 1902.

To all whom it r11/ty concern:
Be it known that I, GEORGE W. LUNT, a citizen of the United States, residing at New Brunswick, in the county of Middlesex and State of New Jersey, have invented an Improvement in Bottle-Stoppers, of which the following is a specification.
My invention relates to bottle-sto`ppers, and more particularly to that class of Stoppers adapted for use in connection with bottles and similar receptacles for tooth and toilet powders.
In carrying out my invention I employ a anged sleeve or collar, of metal, within which and fitting the saine closely I provide a tubular telescopin g head. The upper or outer end of thehead is closed in a form adapted to be grasped by hand and-theother end is left open and is preferably slightly flared. The tubular head is provided with one or more apertures or powder-delivery openings in such a position that the same may be placed above or below the flange of the said sleeve or collar at pleasure by varying the relative positions of the tubular head in the sleeve or collar for permitting the discharge of the desired quantity of powder or the closing'off of the same. I surround the saidflanged sleeve or collar with a cork, the top of which abuts against the under side of the flange and the bottom preferably extends somewhat beyond the end of the sleeve or collar. The cork is adapted to fit the neck of the bottle or receptacle as hereinafter described.
In the drawings, Figure l is an elevation of my improved stopper, showing the tubular head in the open position. Fig. 2 is a plan of the same. Fig. 3 is an elevation showing the tubular head in the closed position. Fig. 4 is a sectional view showing the stopper inserted in the neck of a bottle.

The sleeve or collar a is surrounded. by a tapering cork c, which is made to bind 011 or is securedto the sleeve or collar, the upper end of the cork fitting under the iiange d' and the lower end extending appreciably beyond the end of the sleeve or collar ct, that portion of the cork extending beyond the end of the sleeve or collar being interiorly cut away to provide ample roorn for the movement of the tubular telescoping head b. The corks employed are preferably of varying sizes, so as to be adapted to fit the necks of different-sized bottles.
I provide the tubular head b with an aperture e, through which the contents of the bottle or receptaclemay be removed. This aperture is narrow and transversely placed and is so located that when the tubular head b is in the open position, Figs. l and 4, the lower edge of the aperture comes slightly above the top of the iiange ct, and when the tubular head is in the closed position., Fig. 3, the upper edge of the aperture comes appreciably below the head of the said flange. The tubular top at the closed end is enlarged to be grasped by the hand to move the head longitudinally of the sleeve or collar. The configuration of the tubular head is not essential; but a portion, as 3, somewhat above the upper edge of the aperture e is preferably made flaring in order that When the tubular top is pushed in to close the stopper this portion 3 will both act as a stop and will wedge or `jarn with the sleeve or collar a, and so provide a means whereby in and of itself the tubular head b cannot beconne loose or the stopper open.
I claim as my invention- I. As a new article of manufacture, a bottlestopper comprising a flanged sleeve or collar, a surrounding tapering cork adapted to fit the neck of a bottle, a tubular telescoping head within the sleeve or collar having a powder-delivery aperture, an enlarged closed end to be grasped by the hand and forming a stop against the sleeve or collar and a iiared IOO open end to prevent separation of the substantially as specified.
2. As a new article of man ufaetu re, a bottlestopper comprising a flanged sleeve or collar,
5 a closely-tting tubular head Within said sleeve or collar, having a powder-delivery aperture therein, the said tubular head being closed at one end and open and flaring at the other end and adapted to slide Within the said Io sleeve or collar to bring the said aperture parts,
above and below the flange of the sleeve or collar to open and close the stopper, and a cork surrounding the said anged sleeve or collar and adapted to t the neck of a bottle, substantially as described.
