GEORGE YOERGER, OF BROOKLYN, NEW YORK.
PUNCHlNG-BAG APPARATUS.
SPECIFICATION forming part of Letters Patent No. 71 3, dated December 16, 1902- Application filed $eptember 3, Serial No. 121,945. (No model.)
, lyn, in the county of Kings and State of New,
York, have invented certain new and useful Improvements in Punching-Bag Apparatus,
of which the following is a full and complete specification, such as will enablethose skilled.
in the art to which itappertains to make and use the same.
The object of this invention is to provide an improved punching-bag apparatus which is adapted to be suspended or supported between the ceiling and floor of a room or compartment in such a manner as to do away with the vibration of the ceiling occasioned by apparatus of this class when suspended therefrom and connected therewith in the usual manner. I
The inventionis fully disclosed in the following specification, of which the accompanying drawings form a part, in which the separate parts of myimprovement are designated by suitable reference characters in each of the views, andin which- Figure 1 is a perspective view showing my improved punching-bag apparatus and the method of supporting the same; Fig. 2, a side view of a detail thereof, and Fig. 3 a plan view of said detail.
In the practice of my invention I provide a suitable main frame which, as shown in the drawings, consists of a ring or band a'and radially-arranged cross-bars 0 which are secured together at the center a in any desired manner and which project beyond the ring or band a to form arms a In the form of construction shown two of I the cross-bars a are employed and four of the arms (1 but the central portion of the main frame may be formedin any desired manner and three or more of the arms a may be employed, and in the form of construction shown the bars a and arms a are rigidly connected with the ring or band or. I also suspend from theceiling or any othersuitable support b a pulley c, and the mainframe is provided with a plu rality of cords e,=which are connected with the arms a and with which is connected a ring or similar device f, provided with a pulley 9, through which is rove a rope or cord 7:, which is also connected with the pulley g,
said rope or cord being also passed it around the pulley c, and by pulling on the end 72, of the rope or cord It the main frame may be raised or lowered, as will be readily understood. At suitable points in the floor or near the .bottom of the walls of the room or compartment in which the apparatus is placed, if said room or compartment be small, I secure hooks or otherattaching devices 2', and in the ends of the arms a I form a notch'or recess j, and rearwardly of the notch or recess in said arms and the tops of said arms I secure screws or headed pins 70; I also provide a strong rope or cord m, the ends of which are secured to one of the hooks 't', as shown at m and m and said rope or cord or the parts thereof between the hooks 't' are raised and looped over the arms a inwardly around thepins or screws k, as shown in dotted lines in Fig. 1. It will be understood, of course, that the end an of the rope or cord h is firmly secured to any desired support after the main frame has been raised to the required height, and after the rope or cord m has been looped over the arms a as described, one end of said rope or cord is detached or loosened from the hook i, with which it was connected, and said rope is pulled as tight as possible, after which the said end of the rope or cord isagain firmly secured to said hook. The separate reaches of the rope or cord at the end of each of the arms a are then pressed together by the thumb or finger and looped over the ends of said arms into the notches or' recesses j, as clearly shown in the drawings, and this operation, renders the apparatus perfectly secure and rigid, and any vibration occasioned by the use thereof is taken up principally bythe floor or other lower attachment and is not transmitted to the ceiling above.
The punching-bag nis suspended from the center of the main frame by a rope or oord'n or in the usual or any preferredmanner, and in practice the said main frame may begraised or lowered to any desired extent, so as toadapt the apparatus for use by men and boys.
In practice the hooks t' orother supports are placed equal-distant, and if the room or compartment in which the apparatus is placed is small these hooks or other attaching devices may be secured to the walls thereof at or near the bottom thereof, or they may be secured to the floor, as shown in the drawings.
My invention is not limitedto the details of the construction of the main frame as herein shown and described nor to the method of connecting the parts thereof, and it will be apparent that changes in and modifications of the construction described may be made without depart-ingfrom the spirit of myinvention or sacrificing its advantages.
Having fully described my invention, What I claim as new, and desire to secure by Letters Patent, is
1. A punching-bag apparatus comprising a main frame from the center of which the bag is suspended, radial arms connected with said frame, means for adjustably suspending the main frame from an overhead support, hooks or other attaching devices secured below the main frame, and a rope or cord connected with said hooks and adapted to be connected with the ends of said arms and to be drawn tight so as to hold the main frame rigid, substantially as shown and described.
so as to hold the main frame rigid, said radial arms being provided in the end thereof with notches or recesses and inward of said end with pins or screws which are secured in the tops thereof, substantially as shown and described.
In testimony that I claim the foregoing as my invention I have signed my name, in presence of the subscribing witnesses, this 30th day of August, 1902.
GEORGE YOERGER.
