Pennsylvania., have invented anImproved-DoowSpring; and`I do hereby'declare the -following to bea-full,

My invention 'consists of a'vertical coil ofv wire, arranged at thejnnction of a door with the door-frame,A und inline.x with the centre ofthe hinges; the wire which constitutes the spring bearing at one end against a plate on-'the frame, and terminating at the other end in an arm bearing against the door, and the whole ot' which is fully described hereafter, forming a cheap, compact, eiiicient, and readily-applied door-spring, uniform in its action, and free from the objections common to ordinary springsl- A`In order to enable others skilled in the art to make and apply my invention, I will nowproceed to describe its construction' and operation, reference being had to the accompanying drawing, lwhich forms a part ofthis i specification, and in which--Y Figurel is affront view of a. door and door-frame with my improvement. A is adoor hung by ordinary hinges c to .the frame B, andV to the latter is secured, by screws or otherwise, a metal plate, D, having at each end a. projectiomf. .A vertical rod, g, the centre of'which coincides with the centre of the hinges n, is secured to the projections f, and a steel wire, H, one end of which bears against the plate D, is coiled round the said rod, a portion of the door and its frame being out away for thereception' of thec'oil; which terminates in Ya-narm, z', thelatter extending partly across the door, to which itmay beconiined'by a staplehf, the wire bearing against a. plate on the door near thesaid staple. The centre of the coil being in line with the centre of the hinges,`it will .be'evident that there can be little or no rubbing of thel arm of the spring' against the plate or the door, as the wire maintains the same or nearly the same position whether- .the door 'is open or closed. Owing to the length-of' the coil', there is very little-variation in the force exerted,

the force to maintain the door closed being equal, or nearly equal, to that exertedin closing the door after it has been opened. The staple j may be dispensed lwith, -and' the arme' may have a bentend` inserted into an orifice in. the door. I V

` As my improved door-spring is composed of but two main pieces, its simplicity and cheapness will be apparent, while its application to a door maybe accomplished in a few minutes by any one capable of handling the simplest tools. l I

I claim as my invention, and desire to secure by Letters 'Patent- The wire spring H, coiled round a. rod secured to the frame of the door, and terminating in an arm, z',

y'bearing against the door, when the centre of the c'oil is'in line with the hinges, all substantially as set forth.
