IMPROVED SASH-STOP.

TO'ALL WHOM IT MAY CONCERN:
Be it known that we, Joni. G. GARRnrsoN and FRANKLIN D. CLARK, of the city .of Buffalo, in the county of Erie, and State of New York, have invented certain new and useful' Improvements in Sash-Locks; and wo do herebydeclare that the following is a full and exact description thereof, reference being had to the accompanying drawings, making part of this specification, in which!- Figure 1 is a section through a. portion of a window-casing, with a portion of the plate of the lock broken away, showing a front elevation ofthe lock and a portion of the sash.
Figure 2, an edge view of the lock secured in place in `the casing. l
Our invention consists in thecombination of two cams or eccentric segments. geared together by teeth meshing-into each other, so that when partially rota-ted on their axes in one direction their faces are forced simultaneously against the sash, holding it both from falling and being raised; and when turned in the opposite direction, recede therefrom in like manner, being self-operating in lock, by means of a weighted portion, together with the additional weight of the thumb-lever, and unlock by pressing against said lever; and it further consists in the manner of constructing the case for holding said cams and lever, with a combination of slots or recesses therein, by means of which one side of said case is made to form, by the 'casting of a single plate, both away or passage in which said thumb-lever moves, and a guard to retain it in position, instead of the latter being composed ofa separate piece, riveted or otherwise attached, as ordinarily required.
In the drawings, Arepresents. a portion of the side rail of a sash, and B acontiguous portion of the window-casing. C, the case ofthe lock, with-two side plates, between which the two toothed cams or segments D E are pivoted, by means of pins a a, cast with and projecting from the back plate 6 of the case. The cams mesh together by means Lof teeth c c, and are provided with faces eZ d, of the form shown, both of which engage with the edge of the sash, as shown in black lines, iig. 1, wedging against it in such a manner as to prevent it being movedin either direction. This cam E is weighted or made heavier at e, the gravity of which, combined with the thumb-lever, presently to be described, causes them to act automatically, lby keeping their faces in con` tact with the edge of the sash, the friction between the contiguous'surfaces being suiiicient to produce the vnecessary wedging. The sash is released by means of a thumb-lever, F, that is pivoted to `the cam E, by means of aprojecting pin cast therewith, as shown in iig. 1 which being pressed in partially rotates the cams, removing their faces from contact with the sash,'as clearly represented in the red lines, iig. 1. The weight of this lever also assists the portion e in rendering the lock automatic in its action, as ab'ovc specified. The side, H, of the ease, or that on which the arm F is pivoted, is east with the edge z' ofy the case, and is formed with a portion, f, in relief or elevated, with recesses`or slots, m s, on each side, to allow the passage of the arm beneath7 as represented, forming a way for the same to slide in, while the tongue f operates as a guard to retain it in place. This elevated portion may be extended to f, where it further operates as a cop or guard to keep the end of the lever engaged with its pivot-pin. I
The lock is inserted in a mortisc formed in the window-casing, and then fastened by screws 0througl1 the ilangespp, as shown in g. 2. It is cast in five pieces, ready to put together without drilling or filing. A single rivet, r, may be employed to retain the caso together. When secured in the window-casing, it is hid from view except the end ofthe thumb-lever, and consequently does not present that ungainly and'objectionablc appearance which many other kinds do that are attached on the outside to the casing or sash. It' is easily operated, securely holds thesash in whatever position required, locking it down, as welly as holding it up.
The'construction of the plate H of the case, so as to form a way for the arirl F, whilethc tonguefsecures it in place, dispenses with the use of a separate guard-piece, as is ordinarily required, as well as the expense ofriveting or otherwise attaching it to the case.
What we claim as o'ur invention, and desire to secure by Letters Patent, is-
The eccentric segments D E, geared together, and self-operating, by means of the weighted portion e, vand lever F, arranged and operating substantially as and for the purposes set forth.
. In witness whereof, we have hereunto signed our names in the presence of two subscribing witnesses. JOEL G. GARRETSON, FRANKLIN D. CLARK.
