SPECIFICATION forming part of Letters Patent No. 716,016, dated December 16, 1902. Application filed May 2, 1901. Serial No. 58.488. (No model.)
To all whom it may concern.-
Be it known that I, WILLIAM K. FARRAND, a citizen of the United States, residing at Brooklyn, in the county of Kings and State of New York, have invented certain new and useful Improvements in Hangers for Awnings, dtc., of which the following is a speciiication.
This invention relates to hangers for awnings,windowshades, and similar devices; and it has for its object to provide an improved hanger of this class which will be capable of ready attachment and detachment and will be superior in positiveness of operation and general efficiency.
In the drawings, Figure 1 is a perspective view of a window-frame provided with my improved hanger and illustrating an awning supported by the same. Fig. 2 is a detail end view of one member of my improved hanger, showing the parts in operative position. Fig. 3 is a detail sectional view of the same. Fig. 4 is a detail end view of another memberof the improved hanger. Fig. 5 is a detail sectional view of the same. Fig. 6 is a detail vertical sectional view of another member of my improved hanger. Fig. 7 is a detail transverse sectional View of the same, taken upon the line 7 7, Fig. 6.
Corresponding parts in all the figures are denoted by the same reference characters.
Referring to the drawings1 designates my improved hanger as applied to a window and supporting an awning.
The improved hanger consists of three members 2, 3, and 4, respectively, Figs. 2, 4, and 6, of which the members 2 and 3 are applied to the horizontal awning-support 5 and the member 4 is applied to the tilting or folding awning-frame 6.
The member 2, Fig. 2, consists of two elements 7 and 8, respectively,.of which the element 3v is designed to be permanently secured to the window-frame 9 and the element 7 is adjustably carried by the horizontal awning support or rod 5. rlhe member 7 is formed to interlock with the member 8 and consists of a collar 10, which is threaded upon one end of the rod 5 and is provided with avprojecting head 11, which is adapted to be received by the element S. The head 11 is provided with a transverse perforation or opening 12, Fig. 3,V through which a nail or other suitable implement may be passed to cause the rotation or adjustment of the collar 10 upon the rod 5. The element 8 of the member 2 consists of a bracket-piece 13, which is arranged in a plane at right angles to the line of extension of the rod 5 and is provided with a transverse irregular slot 14, which forms a shoulder 15, beneath which the head 11 may be titted by rotation or adjustment of the collar 10. The slot 14 opens at the top of the bracketpiece 13, whereby the head 11 may readily be inserted into the same and iitted beneath the shoulder 15. The head 11 is engaged with and disengaged form the shoulder 15 by rotating or adjusting the collar 10 by' means of a nail or other implement which may be applied to the same in the opening 12.
The member 3 is identical in construction with the member 2, with the exception that 'in ysubstitution for the irregular shoulderforming slot 14 the bracket-piece 13 is provided with a rectangular slot 16, in which the head 1l exactly fits. In applying the transverse member or rod 5 to the bracketpiece 13 the head 11 of the member 3is first passed .through the slot 16 in the bracket-piece 13 of the member 3, and the head 11 of the member 2 is then passed downwardly into the slot 14 in the bracket-piece 13 and is turned into position for locking engagement with the shoulder 15. The transverse support or rod 5'is then securely locked in position against inadvertent detachment.
The member 4 consists of two elements 17 and 1S, respectively, of which the element 17 is sli'dably mounted upon the customary vertical guide-rods 19 and the member 13 is carried by the awning-frame 6. It will be understood that the said awning-frame is of bowed formation, as customary, and carries at each end one of the adjustable elements 18, there being also two of the guide-rods 19 and two sliding elements 17, carried, respectively, by said guide-rods. Each of the elements 17 consists of a collar 20, which is loosely mounted upon one of the guide-rods 19 and is provided with a projecting portion 21, consisting of parallel spaced angular keepers 22. Each of the adjustable elements 18 con- IOO sists of a collar 23, which is threaded upon one end of the awning-frame 6 and is p r with a projecting T-head 24, whicl fitted between the keepers 22 when *j ti 1of the device to the various conditions 23 has been suitably adjusted and which will be prevented from withdrawal from the keepers 22 when the collar 23 is suitably further adjusted. The collar 23 is provided with a transverse slot or opening 25, through which a nail or other suitable implement may be passed for the purposes of adjustment of the element 1S in connecting the T-head 24 with the keepers 22 andin disconnecting the former from the latter.
The operation and advantages of my improved hanger will be readily understood. The horizontal support 5 may be readily connected with the window-frame by inserting the head 11 of the member 3 in the slot 16 in the bracket-piece 13 of the member 3 and then inserting the head 11 of the member 2 in the irregular slot 14 in the bracket-piece 13 and adjusting the collar 10 to engage said head 11 beneath ,the shoulder 15 and prevent the withdrawal of the same from the slot 14. To disconnect the horizontal support 5 from the bracket-pieces 13, the collar 10 of the member 2 is adjusted or rotated sufficiently to disengage thehead 11 from the shoulder 15, and said head 11 is then withdrawn from the slot 14, which permits the withdrawal of the head 1l of the member 3 from .the slot 1G in the bracket-piece 13 of the member 3. To counect the awning-frame 6 with the guide-rods 19 in operative vertically-adjustable and pivotally-movable position, the T-heads 24 are passed between the keepers 22 of the collar 20, and the collars 23, which carry the T- heads, are then rotated or adjusted to bring the T- heads into planes transversely of the keepers, in which position they are prevented from detachment from the sliding elements 17. It will be understood that when the awning-frame is raised into folded or vertical position the T- heads rest upon the projecting portions 21, which are secured to the collars 20, and thus firmly support the awningframe. The angular formation and spaced relation ofthe keepers 22 permit of free movement of the T- heads 24 in connection with the keepers 22 in the pivotal movement of the awning-frame. The collars 20 of the sliding elements 17 move freely upon the guide-rods 19in adjusting the awning-frame. The awning-frame may be hoisted and lowered in the customary manner by means of cords connected with the same and passing over pulleys 26, which are sustained by the horizontal awning-support 5.
My improved hanger may be applied to a wide variety of shapes and styles of awnings, as well as to window-shades, curtain-poles, and other devices.
I do not desire to be understood as limiting myself to the details of construction and arrangement as herein described and illustrated, as it is manifest that variations and modifications may be made in the features of construction and arrangement in the adaptaof use without departing from the spirit and scope of my invention and improvements. I therefore reserve the right to all such variation and modification as properly fall within the scope of my invention and the terms of the following claims.
Having thus described my invention, I claim and desire to secure by Letters Patent- 1. In a device of the class described, means for connecting the awning-frame with the window-frame, comprising two separate elements one of which consists of a cap adjustably mounted upon the awning-frame and provided with a projection, which is rectangular in cross-section and extends diametrically across the outer surface of the closed end of said cap, and the other of which is carried by the window-frame and formed to receive said projection and to lock the same against withdrawal by the adjustment of said cap.
2. In an improved hanger of the class described, means for connecting the awningframe with the window-frame, comprisingtwo elements one of which is adj ustably connected with the awning-frame and embodies a T- head and the other of which elements embodies two spaced keepers arranged to receive said adjustable element in locking engagement.
3. In an improved hanger of the class described, means for connecting the awningframe with the Window-frame comprising two elements one of which is connected with the awning-frame and the other of which is connected with the window-frame, said firstnamed element consisting of an adjustable collar provided with a projecting T-head, and
A said last-named element consisting of a slidable collar provided with spaced angular keepers which are formed to receive said T- head in locking engagement.
4. The herein-described means for connecting awning-frames with the vertical guiderods which are secured to the window-frame, comprising an adjustable element connected with one end ofthe awning-frameand a slidv able element connected with each of said vertical guide-rods, each of said adjustable elements consisting of a collar which is threaded to one end of the awning-frame and is provided with a projecting T-head, and each of said slidable elements consisting of a collar which is mounted upon one of said guide-rods and is provided with two angular spaced keepers which are connected each at its ends with said slidable collar, said slidable element being formed to receive said adjustable element in locking engagement.
