WATCH-BARREL.
SPECIFICATION forming part of Letters Patent No. 716,013, dated December 16, 1902 Application filed December 26I 1901. Serial No. 87,148. (No model.)
Be it known that I, Lnwis A. ERICKSON, a citizen of the United States, residing at Stromsburg, in the county of Polk and State of Nebraska, have invented new and useful Improvements in lVatches, of which the following is a specification.
This invention relates to watches, and has for its object to provide an improved device which will prevent the shock or recoil of a broken Inainspring from being thrown upon the time-train of the watch.
A further object is to so arrange the parts of the timepiece that in the event of the breaking of the mainspring the old spring may readily be removed and a new one applied without injuring or disturbing the remaining parts.
With these objects in view the invention consists in such parts and combinations of parts as will be specifically described hereinafter, defined in the claims, and illustrated in the drawings, in which- Y,

The reference- numerals 1 and 2 designate the top and bottom plates, respectively, of a watch. These plates are of course properly spaced apart,and contained between the same are the works,`to be hereinafter described.
It will be noticed that I have illustrated only a portion of the works in fact-only such parts as relate to myinvention. The remaining parts being of the ordinary construction, it is not thought necessary to illustrate them.
Positioned at a convenient point with relation to the remainder of the works and journaled in the plates 1 and 2 is an arbor 3, on which is rigidly mounted a master-whee1`4. This arbor is angular in cross-section for a portion of its length and intermediate its ends, as at 5, the purpose of which will be presently apparent. The remaining .portions of the arbor are slightly reduced in size andare preferably circular in cross-section.
Sleeved upon the arbor 3 is an arbor-hub 6, upon which the mainspring is adapted to be wound. This arbor-sleeve comprises a cylindrical barrel provided with a central angular bore or opening 7, adapted to it over and engage the angular portion 5 of the arbor 3. On the lower end of the hub is a tubular extension 8, formed integral with the hub of the arbor-sleeve and which encircles the reduced portion of the arbor. A similar extension 9 is arranged on the upper end of the arbor-sleeve, to be referred to hereinafter. On the hub of the arbor-sleeve is a projection or catch 10,which is adapted to be engaged by one end of the mainspring, (not shown,) while the other end of the mainspring is designed to engageasimilar catch 11 on the inner wall of the barrel 12, which surrounds the arbor-hub and spring to retain said spring at all times within its walls. This hub 12 is formed at its lower end with an angular opening 13, concentric with relation to the hub, said angular opening-being designed to fit over and secured to a correspondingly-.shaped projection 14E, carried by the ratchet-wheel 15, positioned adjacent the plate 2. The hub-cover (designated by the reference-numeral 16) is rigidly mounted to the plate 2 through the medium of a flange 17. A portion of the ange is cut away at 18 to make room for the center arbor 19, said cover 16 completely covering the top and sides of the hub 12, thus forming a contact or bearing at 20, whereby the hub is secured in position and prevented from becoming displaced. This hub-cover is provided with a concentric opening 21, through which the projection 9 on the arbor-sleeve extends.
Secured to the plate 2 and positioned intermediate the bottom of the box 12 of the plate 2 is a ratchet-wheel bridge 22, the purpose of which is to space the ratchet-wheel and hub apart, also to form a bearing for the ratchetwheel hub, as at 23.
It will be noticed that the master-wheel 4C engages the pinion 24 on a central shaft or arbor 19,which is journaled between the plates 1 and 2, and that said arbor or shaft carries a gearwheel 25, which slightly overlaps the ratchetwheel 15. This being true, I find it necessary to cut away or remove a portion of the bridge IOG 22, as at 22, to provide a space for the wheel 25, so as not to interfere with its rotation.
It will thus be seen that I provide a simple, effective, and durable arrangement which will readily accomplish the purpose for which it is intended. It will further be apparent that the arbor, hub-cover, and spring-hub, with its mainspring and arbor-hub, can readily be removed Without disturbing the remaining parts of the works by simply removing the plate l, then the gear 4, and then slipping the parts being removed off the arbor.
Having thus fully described my invention, what I claim as new, and desire to secure by Letters Patent, is-
l. In a watch the combination with top and bottom plates, the bottom plate having a forwardly-projecting threaded ange on one side thereof, an arbor interposed between the tWo plates and provided with an angular portion intermediate its ends, a hub removably secured on said arbor and provided With a central angular opening through which the angular portion of the arbor projects, a springbarrel surrounding the arbor and hub, and
means on the hub and barrel for engaging the mainspring of a Watch, a cover fitting over the barrel and having a depending ange entirely surrounding the barrel and terminating at a point adjacent the bottom thereof, and a liange projecting from one side of the periphery of the cover and designed to engage the threaded flange of the plate whereby' said cover will be rigidly secured thereto.
2. In a Watch, the combination with tWo plates spaced apart, one of said plates having a forwardly-projecting flange, an arbor interposed between the plates, a spring-hub thereon, a barrel surrounding the hub, a cover for said barrel, and a laterally-projecting flange arranged on one side of the cover and designed to engage the ange on one of the plates whereby said cover can be rigidly secured thereto.
