Specification of Letters Patent.

To all whom it may concern.-
Be it known that I, NEIL OURRIE, a citizen of the United States, residing at Dallas, Texas, have invented certain new and useful Improvements in Watches, of which the following is a specification.
My invention relates to watches, and more particularly to certain features of the movement of watches; and the object is to provide a construction or arrangement by which the mainspring of the watch can be taken out or put in without either taking the Watch apart or removing the watch-movement from the casing and to produce watches which will be more simple in construction and which can be manufactured at smaller cost and which will give better results.
One of the advantages is that the mainspring can be put in by simply unscrewing one screw and without removing the movement from the case.
Another advantage is that the mainspringbarrel is located partly in the mainspringbarrel plate or top plate, thus making 1t possible to make a deeper barrel in which a wider spring can be used, and the winding orratchet wheel can be placed above the top plate. The watch can with this arrangement be made thinner and yet have a wider mainspring.
Other objects and advantages will be fully explained in the following description, and the invention will be more particularly pointed out in the claims.
Reference is had to the accompanying drawings, which form a part of this application and specification.
Figure 1 is a plan view of suflicient parts of a watch to illustrate my invention. Fig. 2 is a side elevation of the same. Fig. 3 is a vertical section along the line a: a: of Fig. 1.
Similar characters of reference are used to indicate the same parts throughout the several views.
This improvement is applicable to any watch or clock of ordinary construction In the drawings the top plate A is secured to the main plate G by the pillars R and screws 1". The mainspring-barrel O is mounted in a recess turned out in the plate A, and the ratchet or winding wheel B is made integral with the barrel O. The barrel O is held in place partly by being located in a recess turned out in the plate A and mainly by the combined pillar, arbor, screw D. The lower end of the screw D is reduced and threaded and screwed into the main plate G. The main drive-wheel H of the watch-movement is mounted on the arbor D and meshes with a pinion J, which is mounted on the arbor c, which has the upper end journaled in the top plate A. The wheel E is mounted also on the arbor c and is thus driven by the drive-wheel H. The hub of the drive-wheel H has a sleeve F extending upward, and the barrel C has a downwardlyprojecting bearing 1), which rests on the sleeve F. Friction can be reduced by making the bearing 5 and the sleeve F thin. As a pillar the element D holds the barrel and ratchetwheel B against vertical movement. The element D being screwed into the plate G secures all the elements, the wheel H with the sleeve F, and barrel O in place, and the 'ratchet-wheel B being integral with the barrel O is also held in place by the element D. The mainspring K may be secured to the barrel O and to the wheel H in the usual manner.
Having fully described my invention, what I claim as new, and desire to secure by Letters Patent, is-
1. A watch having top and bottom plates, a mainspring-barrel having a ratchet-wheel formed integral therewith, said barrel being mounted in and projecting through a recess turned out in said top plate and said Wheel being located above said top plate, and a combined arbor and screw cooperating with said top plate for holding said barrel in position.
2. In a watch provided with top and main plates, a mainspring-barrel mounted in and projecting through a recess turned out in said top plate and having a winding or ratchet wheel formed integral therewith and located above said top plate, and a combined arbor and screw for holding said barrel in position, 1saaid barrel having a sleeve engaging said ar- 3. In a Watch provided with top and main plates, a mainspring-barrcl mounted in and extending through a recess turned out in said top plate and having a ratchet-wheel formed integral therewith and located above said top plate, a combined arbor and screw for said barrel secured in said main plate, a main drive-wheel mounted on said arbor and hav ing a sleeve projecting upward about said arbor, and a bearing integral with said barrel and resting on said sleeve.
4.
