Description
(Model D. A. A. BUG K.
MAINSPRING BARREL FOR WATCHES.
No. 293,142. Patented Feb. 5, 1884.
I UNITED STATES PATENT OFFICES DANIEL A. A. BUCK, OF WATERBURY, CONNECTICUT, ASSIG-NOR TO THE \VATERBURY IVATCH COMPANY, OF SAME PLACE.
MAtNSPRING-BARREL FOR WATCHES.
SPECIFICATION forming part of Letters Patent No. 293,142,
Application filed July 521, 1883.
T0 aZZ whom it may concern Be it known that I, DANIEL A. A. BUCK, of lVaterbnry, in the county of New Haven, and in the State of Connecticut, have invented certain new and useful Improvements in Mainspring-Barrels for Watches; and I do hereby declare that the following is a full, clear, and exact description thereof, reference being had to the accompanying drawings, making a part of this specification, in which Figure 1 is a perspective view of my springbarrel and main wheel separated from each other. Fig. 2 is a like view of the same combined for use. Fig. 3 is a plan view of a watchmovement eontaining said parts. Fig. 4 is a section of the same upon line :0 a; of Fig. 3.
Letters of like name and kind refer to like parts in each of the figures.
The design of my invention is to prevent injury to the train of a watch from breakage of the mainspring; and to this end it consists, in combination with stem-winding mechanism, in a mainspring-barrel made separate from the mainwheel, jonrnaled upon the main wheel arbor, and provided with peripheral teeth, whereby it may be rotated upon and around said arbor to wind the mainspring, substantially as and for the purpose hereinafter specified.
In the annexed drawings, A represents a spring-barrel, which has preferably somewhat less than the usual depth, and is provided upon its periphery with gear-teeth a of ordinary form. Said barrel is journaled upon the arbor b of the main wheel B, and its open end is contained within a recess, 2), which is provided within the contiguous face of said wheel, which latter acts as a cover for said barrel to confine the spring in place within the same,
dated February 5, 1884.
(Model) The parts described being placed in posiis provided for engagement with the teeth a of said barrel, and a windingpinion, C, caused to mesh with the same, when said pinion will. be revolved and said barrel rotated until said spring is wound, and its power, acting through the main wheel 13, will actuate the train in the usual manner. If, now, the mainspring should break and expand in the ordinary man ner against the inner periphery of the barrel, no damage could result to any portion of the train or to said barrel, for the reason that the latter would then be disconnected and free to revolve upon the arbor 1) without influence upon contiguous parts.
Having thus fully set forth the nature and merits of my invention, what I claim as new 1s In combination with stenrwinding mechanism, a mainspring-barrel made separate from the main wheel, journaled upon the mainwhcel arbor, and provided with peripheral teeth, whereby it may be rotated upon and around said arbor to wind the mainspring, substantially as and for the purpose specified.
In testimony that I claim the foregoing I have hereunto set my hand this 17th day of May, A. D. 1883.
GEo. E. TERRY, FRED L. TERRY.
