Description

No. 7l5,976. Patented Dec. I6, I902.
P. CAROLAN.
B00 COUPLING.
hcation filed Aug 1902) M m l- P l I i 5 UNITED STATES PATENT OFFICE.
PATRICK CAROLAN, OF CLEVELAND, OHIO.
ROD-COUPLING.
SPECIFICATION forming part of Letters Patent No. 715,976, dated December 16, 1902.
Application filed August 4, 1902- Serial No. 118,310. (No model.)
To all whom it may concern.-
Be it known that I, PATRICK CAROLAN, a citizen of the United States of America, and a resident of Cleveland, in the county of Cuyahoga and State of Ohio, have invented certain new and useful Improvements in Rod- Couplers, of which the following is a specification.
This invention relates to couplings for rods used in drawing or placing wires or cables in conduits for electrical purposes; and it con sists in the new construction and combination of parts which comprise the device, substantially as hereinafter described, and pointed out in the claim.
In the accompanying drawings, Figure 1 is a plan view of the coupler. Fig. 2 is a longitudinal section of the coupler. Fig. 3 is a longitudinal section of one half of the coupler having the mortise. Fig. 4is a side View of the opposite half of the coupler having the tenon. Fig. 5 is a side view of the coupler, showing the manner of inserting or withdrawing the tenon from the mortise.
A represents one half of the coupler, in which is made the mortise, consisting of a straight sl ot cut through from one side to the other from the end, the body of the coupler being around piece of metal, preferably aluminium, orany other suitable material. The
inner end of the mortise has a beveled end a, with a short shoulder or stop a, and at the opposite side is a cross-stop 0, near the open end.
B represents the opposite half of the coupler, having the tenon B, which is the full depth of the body B and is of the thickness equal to the width of the mortise, which it nicely fits. The end of the tenon is beveled to fit the bevel a in the mortise. A portion of the tenon is cut away at b to form a recess to fit under the stop a in the mortise. A recess b is cut at the heel of the short side of the tenon to fit over the cross (1 C C are side slots in the body B, located at each side of the heel of the tenon, into which narrow extensions Con the ends of body A fit when the coupling is made. (1 d are curved side pieces on the edge of the tenon, which fit in recesses e e in the edges of the mortise. The ends of the bodies A and B may have sockets F F or tenons G G by which they may be attached to rods of wood or iron or to gaspipes, as may be desired. To connect the two halves, the tenon is inserted in the mortise in about the position shown in Fig. 5 and then pressing it down into the straight position shown in Fig. 1.
Having described my invention, What I claim is In a rodcoupling, consisting of the halfbody, the mortise in said body having the beveled inner end, the shoulder or stop of, the cross stop a and the recesses e e;. the half-body B, the tenon on said half-body, the recesses 19 b in the tenon, the slots C C, and the projections d d, constructed to operate substantially as described.
Signed by meat Cleveland, Ohio, this 28th day of July, 1902.
PATRICK CAROLAN.
