UNITED STATES PATENT OFFICE.
JOHN F. AMES, OF PORTLAND, OREGON.
FONT OF TYPE.
SPECIFICATION forming part of Letters Patent No. 715,936, dated December 16, 1902.
Application filed February 6, 1901. Serial N0. l6,189. (No specimens.)
which I will hereinafter describe and claim- In the accompanying drawing, forming part of this specification, the figure illustrates a group of type constructed according to my invention.
In using type for imprinting words and characters upon surfaces under heavy pressure it is necessary to use a very hard metal in order to prevent the printing-faces of the type or characters from being crushed and broken by a pressure upon the hard surface and when such type are locked in the form and in position to print upon the surface they will spring or bulge out by reason of the great pressure which is brought upon them as the material passes beneath the printing-cylinder.
My invention is designed to use this class of hard-metal type and to provide a means forinterlocking them in the form, so that they will be prevented from bulging or being other- Wise displaced.
As shown in the drawing, A represents type made of brass or equivalent hard metal, having a character on one end and having substantially the entire surface of two opposite sides grooved at 2 in parallel transverse lines, which extend from edge to edge of the body. The arrangement of the grooves is such that the depressions of one type will interlock with the elevations of an adjacent type throughout the height of the bodies of the type, which interlocking will maintain the impressionsurfaoes at all times in proper relation with each other to insure a clean and perfect print.
In addition to the foregoing each of the type has a channel 3 formed in one edge parallel with the character-bearing face and at right angles to the corrugations. This groove is useful in looking the type in position and in correcting slight variations in the corrugations to insure the best results in printing.
Having thus described my invention, what I claim as new, and desire to secure by Letters Patent, is
1. A font of type consisting of independent bodies eachhaving acharacter on one end said bodies having substantially the entire surfaces of two opposite sides grooved in parallel transverse lines which extend from edge to edge of the body, and with the corrugations of adjacentbodies adapted to interlock throughout the height of the bodies.
2. A font of type consisting of independent bodies each having a character on one end said bodies havingopposite sides corrugated continuously from top to bottom in parallel transverse lines extending from edge to edge of the body, and with the corrugations of adjacent bodies adapted to interlock throughout the height of the bodies, each of said bodies having a channel formed in one edge parallel with the character-bearing face and at right angles to the corrugations.
In witness whereof I have hereunto set my hand.
JOHN F. AMES.
