UNITED STATES PATENT OFFICE.
EDMUND DAWSON ROGERS, OF CHURCH END, FIN OHLEY, COUNTY OF MID- DLESEX, ENGLAND, ASSIGNOR TO PAUL WILOOX, OF NEW YORK, N. Y.
MEANS FOR SECURING STEREOTYPE-PLATES WHICH ARE CAST SEPARATELY FROM THEIR BEDS.
SPECIFICATION forming part of Letters Patent No. 381,820, dated April 24, 1888. Application filed September 17, 1887. Serial No. 260,009. (No model.) Patented in England June 4, 1880 No. 2,275.
To all whom it may concern/.-
Be it known that I, EDMUND DAWSON Roe- ERs, a subject of the Queen of Great Britain and Ireland, residing at Church End, Finchley, in the county of Middlesex, Kingdom of Great Britain and Ireland, have invented Improvements in the Means of Securing Stereotype-Plates which are Cast Separately from their Beds, (for which I have obtained a patent inGreat Britain, No. 2,275, bearing date June 4, 1880,) of which the following is a specification.
The object of thisinvention is to make stereotype-plates and their beds insucli mannerthat the plates can be placed and secured on the beds Without necessitating an inconvenient disturbance of the adjoining pages or columns.
According to my invention the plates are placed on the beds by an oblique downward.
motion, and are locked up by the ordinary column rules or other furniture of suflicient height.
Theannexed drawing shows,in cross section, a stereotype-plate and bed for same according to my invention.
a is the stereotypeplate, having at each side thereof a flange. The flange b has one side thereof, b, inclined or beveled. The flange b is a plain straight flange of the kind described in the specification of another application for Letters Patent by. me bearing even date herewith. It is not in all cases necessary to have two flanges, such as described. Sometimes one or both of said flanges may be dispensed with.
e is a longitudinal oblique rib formed on the under side of plate a.
c is the bed. As will be seen, it is formed at its respective sides with recesses corresponding to the shape of the before-mentioned flanges b b*, and also it is formed with an oblique groove to receive the before-mentioned rib c. When one or both of said flanges b b* is or are dispensed with, the bed cwill be made without the corresponding-groove. The rib 0 serves as a guard against either the bed falling from the plate when the forms are being lifted or the plate being pulled from the bed in the process of printing.
What I claim is 1. A stereotype-plate provided with a longitudinal oblique rib on its under side and the straight vertical flange b* on one edge, with the recess to receive it, in combination with a bed having its upper part provided with alongitudinal oblique groove to receive the said rib, substantially as described.
2. A stereotype-plate, a, with a longitudinal oblique rib, e, on its under side, flange b, with beveled or inclined inner side, b, and plain flange b at right angles to the plate a, substantially as described. I
3. A bed for a stereotype-plate, formed at its upper part with a longitudinal oblique groove to receive a longitudinal oblique rib formed on the under side of said plate, and with a recess narrower at its lower part than at its upper part and adapted to receive a flange of the stereotypeplate made with a beveled or inclined inner side, substantially as described.
4. A stereotype-plate, a, with longitudinal oblique rib e on its under side, flange b, with beveled or inclined inner side, b, and plain flange b*, in combination with a bed, 0, formed with longitudinal oblique groove, and with recesses at its respective sides adapted to receive said flanges b and 11*, substantially as herein described.
In testimony whereof I have signed my name to this specification in the presence of two subscribing witnesses.
EDMUND DAWSON ROGERS.
